Who is keeping their kids home from school from Monday?

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 13:24

I am. I am at real risk if I catch this. I am not locking my kids in the house. But it will mean they see a small number of kids rather than the hundreds they do in school.
And yes I will be keeping them away from clubs or any large gatherings as well.
Anyone else?

Mine have been off today. It's sensible. My dh is at risk and i'm not taking chances.

NameChangeNugget · 13/03/2020 14:47

I think they’re probably concerned that children of working parents, will be palmed off onto grandparents who are far more susceptible than the children themselves.

Damned if they do, Damned if they don’t

hazeyjane · 13/03/2020 14:48

I am absolutely fucked off with this.
The last letter from ds's school said, "unless your child is severely I'll, they should be in school" Fucking awesome stuff in a school with a complex needs resource base, with many children who have underlying health conditions (ds included)

I work in a preschool, we have received chuff all guidance on what to tell parents etc, and yet ate supposed to take no action. Without council permission.

Who the fuck is in charge of this shit show.

TwinkleLightsRubberDucks · 13/03/2020 14:48

SixesandEights I absolutely and totally agree with you. Had we seen actual leadership from the government then I think we as a county would feel more at ease, as it is we are being left to make decisions to keep ourselves our families and others safe because it is clear that the government aren't going to do so.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 14:48

We are in unprecedented times. Its better to get it now or right near the end.

People shouldn't feel guilty at all for doing what you need, especially those who are simply not in the best health.

Do what you can, as and when you can.
Neither boris or health man will know you've died or your dc didn't get the care they needed.

Education is the wonder of the world, it's a privilege, a golden gift we try and furnish every child with no matter what their background.

We must support our dc who are facing life changing exams, try and do what we can foe them to keep them studying and calm.

However, everyone else will be absolutely fine. There will be many children, teachers off soon, they will all be in the same boat.

My dc when primary age always seemed to come On far more at home anyway with me even though I posses no teaching skills!

Thanks for the amazing links whoever posted them.
I'm going to print them off later.

Schools won't close, I doubt they ever will unless no staff.

So it's each man for his own community and himself the government have essentially abandoned us to our fate.

hazeyjane · 13/03/2020 14:49

...sorry atrocious spelling a shitloads of swearing. I'm really cross.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 14:50

Name, surely that's the choice of the parents of the children and the grandparents to make.

It's not for the gov to decide.. I know of several gp who have refused to baby sit already and are in lock down.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 13/03/2020 14:51

We're keeping Ds off from Monday, planning on telling school he's self isolating due to a cough. Schools will be closed by the end of next week anyway so it won't matter.

SnoozyLou · 13/03/2020 14:52

If I trusted any of the scientific stuff the Government said I would feel differently. But I disagree so much with what they are saying and doing that I don't trust them to announce school closure when it does make sense.

I get a bit fed up of people taking the mick. You know, "Sue from number 42 thinks she knows better than the Chief Medical Officer". At the very start of the speech yesterday, BJ said some of us will die, and though that's terribly sad, the inference is, we are ultimately all expendable. For the "greater good", they want herd immunity. I'm not queuing up to become part of this 60% of the population they need. Also, I'm not convinced that up to 10,000 people in the community already have it. The test result statistics didn't bear this out. And now there's no testing outside of the hospitals so we won't have a clue on numbers. Basically, I think we're being actively encouraged to go out and get it, until the numbers swell beyond control, then they might try to stem the flow.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 13/03/2020 14:53

Yes. I pulled them out of school and then realised I was going to have to effectively home ed them. School have sent info and been supportive. I am not sure if it's the right thing to do - this is all very worrying and nobody is very happy. I just want to do whatever will slow the peak and be most sensible - there's not enough clear information as to why the government are doing what appears to be very little.

DownWhichOfLate · 13/03/2020 14:53

If you read the link I posted it says you can keep children off and the headteacher will authorise.

Sunshinelollipops1 · 13/03/2020 14:53

@NameChangeNugget I was speaking to a GP yesterday and he said that was his biggest worry, schools/nurseries shut, grandparents called in and they are ones most at risk.

@FacingtheAbess the problem is even if they choose the situation they will be ones likely to get serious ill and need hospitalising.

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 14:55

But how do you know they will be closed by the end of the week?

TheGirlFromStoryville · 13/03/2020 14:55

Do you think we'll see Boris etc queuing up to volunteer to be part of the 60%? I doubt it very much! It's every man for himself as far as I can see.

SerendipityJane · 13/03/2020 14:56

maybe, if it's inside a fridge.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 13/03/2020 15:00

DD’s school has been setting up links and log ins for online education this week. Our school app has been constantly updated with them all day. Children are getting lots of extra worksheets and reading materials home too. I think they are expecting school to close sooner rather than later.

I plan to send DD in to school next week. Easter holidays start the following week (in Scotland so may be different from English holidays) and I fully expect them to run on for an extended period of time at least 1 month rather than the usual 2 weeks. I will assess the situation as it develops and pull her if I feel I need to. We can cope with the extra childcare needed but I just don’t want her missing too much school if we can help it.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:01

@bemoreeverything I have no idea if schools will close at all. But I can keep them off for a week and reassess.
And there is no way I would let my kids visit their grandparents at the moment. If that was my childcare they would be going to school.
But we should be able to openly make the choice.

Will we heck as like!

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:02

Boris may have already caught it from Nadine.

SnoozyLou · 13/03/2020 15:04

I don't even believe he hasn't been tested. They're not going to announce it if we had as it goes against the policy of only testing people who have been hospitalised.

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 15:05

OP sorry that question wasn't for you, it was for the poster who said schools will be closed by the end of next week anyway. I wondered what they knew that the rest of us don't.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:11

Schools will soon be overwhelmed because of the amount of teachers off ill. They will be glad of any kids kept off.

StillDisappointed · 13/03/2020 15:15

The manager at DDs nursery has just sent an email to all parents with regards to the current situation.

They give the number for the Department of Educations' COVID-19 helpline and go on to say
they've been advised that should they have a confirmed case of coronavirus at the nursery they don't need to inform anyone and should keep the nursery open as normal.

I can screenshot the email if anyone wishes to see proof of that.

I am astounded and will not be sending DD back again.
Absolutely no faith in the nursery (or the selfish parents) at all.

Disgraceful.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:16

@StillDisappointed That sounds to me like they have had a case.

Growingboys · 13/03/2020 15:16

Not me. I have work to do and think they're ok at school for the moment.
