I know there are mixed ideas about what should happen. I completely get people who work being worried and anxious about how they're going to manage and pay the bills etc. but if it is getting to a point where loads of elderly people are going to die and loads of families are going to be affected then Boris surely needs to be acting soon rather than later. I've been watching sky news all afternoon and everybody that goes on to talk about this situation seems to be suggesting that they don't think the schools will close yet. I know we might find out later that he will close the schools but I'm guessing it's not going to happen.

I feel like they should just put some sensible things into place. For example exams should be allowed to be taken at a later date this year. Universities etc should allow the students to start slightly later this year. vouchers could be printed off for poor families so they can still provide a meal for their children if they are not going to school anymore. schools nurseries etc should be closed and deep cleaned as children are the worst for spreading germs. We all know that kids can spread norovirus and colds and flu throughout the winter. before I had children I was never ill and now I get at least 6 colds a year because of the kids.

also the schools are only sending out the link to the government website with the latest how to wash your hands etc. But they're not actually advising parents who might need to isolate their children due to medical issues. It's just kind of like business as usual. the problem is many people will have relatives with cancer and lung problems and many children have asthma. I'm a little bit concerned that the school have not said if you feel there's a reason you want to self isolate your children to please contact us and we'll discuss it further. it's doable for children to stay home for a couple of weeks before Easter. they can have maths sheets sent home and websites with learning on, they can have an extra couple of reading books in their bags. Do drawing etc. They can encourage parents to read to younger children and do basic sums and alphabet with the infant children. Older children are able to go online or read Books on their own.

NHS staff and police paramedics etc could be provided childcare in a special hall or something run by a couple of volunteers or some teachers that are willing to run a childcare club.as long as all the children are ok and not showing signs of coronavirus and paps are even tested then we will know safe for that to happen.

I guess we will have to see I think Ireland have done the right thing and at the moment I wish I lived there because I think they're tackling it a lot better than Boris is right now.

@Savemefromthis4

As @OlaEliza says! And 17000 odd die every winter from 'flu in UK.
Or is there something that we are not be told? Confused

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:05

Sir Patrick Vallance - No-one has immunity. Currently on a trajectory that looks around 4 weeks or so behind Italy.

Devlesko · 12/03/2020 17:05

Just got it, well what a shower of SHIT.
No containment, and no delay.
God help us all.

Nomorewineever · 12/03/2020 17:06

@MillieMoodle but he’s not giving us the tools to do that. My grandparents AND my kids depend on me. My kids run every risk of spreading these germs round like a muck sprayer, with minimal
Impact to them. I need to hunker down and isolate in order to be able to help my grandparents.

This man is making my blood boil.

themental · 12/03/2020 17:07

They think we have 5-10k infected at the moment? Am I hearing this correctly?

Pumpkinpie1 · 12/03/2020 17:07

If Boris was committed to solving this pandemic why has he allowed thousands of Madrid football fans to fly in for a football game in Liverpool when Spain’s in lockdown ?

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:07

He believes between 5,000- 10,000 actually infected. Need to protect people during the most infectious period. The actions need to delay the peak and to push it down.

starrynight19 · 12/03/2020 17:07

So basically we are 4 weeks behind Italy so schools will close then for Easter anyway.

StillbreathingStillhere · 12/03/2020 17:07

Don't go on cruises, use the internet rather than call 111 and stay at home if you are coughing. Fucking mint.

Devlesko · 12/03/2020 17:07

Tedd

What else do you propose?
It's not in a teachers job description to put their own lives at risk, that's the armed services.
Parent's could always take them out and care for their own dc.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:10

So he's basically just said that no point in closing schools as they'd need to be closed for 13-16 weeks and that's not feasible. Plus apparently it won't help anyway.

Sammy867 · 12/03/2020 17:12

I don’t know what the answer is as it’s here and out there now. If you shut the borders the second they reopen it will come back unless we do a worldwide shut down. we are all going to have to get it at some point now

As a comparison for perspective the cdc lists for November 19 to February 2020 as 50,000,000 cases of flu and between 25,000 and 50,000 deaths in America alone in the same period for this virus having 120,000 cases and 5,000 deaths worldwide.

It’s more of a worry as obviously we have no immunity nor vaccinations to help protect the vulnerable so everyone gets sick at once instead of spaced through the season.

I don’t think shutting schools at this point will help en masse but staggering the holidays
I.e half the regions holidays to start next week and go back in 2 weeks, the rest 2 weeks after etc as well as staggered work starting times and finishing times will hopefully mean although people will get ill they will be staggered around the region and not all at once so the resources can stretch to cover as as one lot are recovering the next people that need help have the resources available

Frangipanini · 12/03/2020 17:13

Where I live it seems that all the grannies are lumbered every school holiday with the DGC. Not everyone can work from home so you may find a lot of grandparents called on if schools shut. That won’t help the situation.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:16

@Nomorewineever I don't think they live in the real world unfortunately.

They are telling us to stay at home if ill. How many employers are going to be happy with that?

Testing will now be based on symptoms and severity. Travel history irrelevant.

Social distancing for vulnerable - not appropriate to make a national requirement for this yet.

Mayaaaaa · 12/03/2020 17:17

Well that was pointless.

Now if you have cold, cough or temperature stay at home for 7 days?

And what if you have a mild cough and not really ill? Not everyone can afford to have 7 days off for a mild cough.

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 17:18

If Boris was committed to solving this pandemic why has he allowed thousands of Madrid football fans to fly in for a football game in Liverpool when Spain’s in lockdown

But cancelled the Manchester-Madrid game. Fine to infect Liverpool fans, clearly (though no doubt a lot of the Madrid fans flew via Manchester anyway).

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 17:19

They are telling us to stay at home if ill. How many employers are going to be happy with that

Any absence during the next few weeks should be disregarded when it comes to sickness policies.

Mayaaaaa · 12/03/2020 17:22

Doesnt matter if its officially disregarded.

I heard our CEO saying he expects loads of people to use this as an excuse to go off.

At my place, you will be judged and have your cards marked. Despite the fact that our head office staff can actually work from home. The owners just dont want us to.

They are worried it will prove the case that working from home is possible. As they currently refuse all request on the basis of 'the business cant support it'.

Thisismytimetoshine · 12/03/2020 17:23

I expect many people will use it as an excuse to swing the lead.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:25

Any absence during the next few weeks should be disregarded when it comes to sickness policies.

Absolutely, but how many employers will be happy with that?

Mayaaaaa · 12/03/2020 17:28

I expect many peoplewilluse it as an excuse to swing the lead.

And there we go. Already people assuming lots will take the piss. An attitude that always extends to the genuine cases.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:30

Any absence during the next few weeks should be disregarded when it comes to sickness policies.

Absolutely, but how many employers will be happy with that? How many will make employees feel as though they have to be there? How many employees will still go to work because they are worried about losing pay or losing their job altogether?

It's all so wishy washy. People need the government to say - if you are ill, you must stay at home and your job will not be at risk, you will still be paid.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:30

Sorry my first post posted too soon.

Savemefromthis4 · 12/03/2020 17:35

My childs had a mild cough for a week following a mild cold. From what Boris has said from tomorrow they can't be in school. But are schools going to chase us for not attending for a week. Hopefully the schools will update!

Sure, China just brought their gargantuan economy to a three month standstill for shits and giggles. Silly them! Why didn't they just carry on like us?
