I know there are mixed ideas about what should happen. I completely get people who work being worried and anxious about how they're going to manage and pay the bills etc. but if it is getting to a point where loads of elderly people are going to die and loads of families are going to be affected then Boris surely needs to be acting soon rather than later. I've been watching sky news all afternoon and everybody that goes on to talk about this situation seems to be suggesting that they don't think the schools will close yet. I know we might find out later that he will close the schools but I'm guessing it's not going to happen.

I feel like they should just put some sensible things into place. For example exams should be allowed to be taken at a later date this year. Universities etc should allow the students to start slightly later this year. vouchers could be printed off for poor families so they can still provide a meal for their children if they are not going to school anymore. schools nurseries etc should be closed and deep cleaned as children are the worst for spreading germs. We all know that kids can spread norovirus and colds and flu throughout the winter. before I had children I was never ill and now I get at least 6 colds a year because of the kids.

also the schools are only sending out the link to the government website with the latest how to wash your hands etc. But they're not actually advising parents who might need to isolate their children due to medical issues. It's just kind of like business as usual. the problem is many people will have relatives with cancer and lung problems and many children have asthma. I'm a little bit concerned that the school have not said if you feel there's a reason you want to self isolate your children to please contact us and we'll discuss it further. it's doable for children to stay home for a couple of weeks before Easter. they can have maths sheets sent home and websites with learning on, they can have an extra couple of reading books in their bags. Do drawing etc. They can encourage parents to read to younger children and do basic sums and alphabet with the infant children. Older children are able to go online or read Books on their own.

NHS staff and police paramedics etc could be provided childcare in a special hall or something run by a couple of volunteers or some teachers that are willing to run a childcare club.as long as all the children are ok and not showing signs of coronavirus and paps are even tested then we will know safe for that to happen.

I guess we will have to see I think Ireland have done the right thing and at the moment I wish I lived there because I think they're tackling it a lot better than Boris is right now.

The reasoning for not closing YET, is:

  • the impact on workers is enormous, particularly healthcare workers (many of whom are women).
  • it is likely that children will simply congregate in less formal settings, anyway.
  • when the shutdown comes, it won't be short. Best to save it for maximum impact.

Schools should close and army brought in to manage childcare for essential workers.
it's not fair to expect teachers and other staff to put their own lives at risks for other people's kids.
Those who want their kids at home should take them out.

ours have.

SixesandEights · 12/03/2020 16:50

Johnson can't even be arsed to have the press conference at the time he said he would.

TeddTess · 12/03/2020 16:50

army brought in to manage childcare

can you imagine?!

AiryFairyMum · 12/03/2020 16:51

This government is putting the economy ahead of saving the lives of vulnerable elderly, ill and disabled people. Nothing new there!

PotholeParadise · 12/03/2020 16:52

Listen to yourself. Would you agree for your kids to be looked after like that, in some random hall?

If I was an NHS nurse and someone told me my kids were going to be looked after like that to enable me to go to work, I'd resign!

SixesandEights · 12/03/2020 16:52

can you imagine?!

I did and I laughed out loud!

Greggers2017 · 12/03/2020 16:52

It's not just emergency services staff that will stlll be needed it's thousands of other jobs.
I work in substance misuse, my clients still need their methadone prescriptions and monitoring.
My partner is a probation officer and his offenders definitely need supervising.
Elder kids dad is a engineer in power stations. We still need power.
Plumbers, electricians, gas engineers, retail workers............... the list goes on.

Amortentia · 12/03/2020 16:53

Errrm, how do you think the kids get to school? Most secondary school children I know get on buses with old people and everyone else.

Maybe better to advise older people to stay home. Closing schools would create a whole chained of problems. Surely if schools are closed more kids would be mixing with a larger section if the population. If you close schools you'd need to put kids under house arrest.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 16:56

They have just said on BBC that moving into the delay stage.

  • if cold or flu symptoms or a temperature over 37.9, self isolate for 7 days
  • all school trips abroad to be banned
  • older people and those with ore-existing health conditions to be advised not to go on cruises.

BoJo speaking now.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 16:57

BoJo acknowledged that number of people infected likely to be much higher than the test results show. Families will lose more loved ones before their time.

Devlesko · 12/03/2020 16:58

Diss

It's disgusting, tbh.
health should come first not money.
Everyone has it right except for us. Excuses like we'll get bored are just ridiculous.
Italy are going to charge for murder, I'm sure that would stop us being bored if we take such action.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 16:59

Moving into delay phase of response.

Want to stretch peak of disease over longer period.

Need to protect elderly and most vulnerable during peak weeks. Most dangerous period is not now, but in some weeks, depending on how quickly spreads.

Chloemol · 12/03/2020 16:59

How come people aren’t this worried about flu? That kills the elderly as well

Devlesko · 12/03/2020 17:00

speaking where? it's not on yet.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:01

All those over 70 or with pre-existing conditions advised not to go on cruises.

Schools advised to cancel trips abroad.

If have any symptoms of Coronavirus or a new cough, self-isolate for 7 days. May introduce further measures in coming weeks so if anyone in a household has symptoms, all will be asked to self-isolate.

Considering banning sporting fixtures. Not closing schools yet.

Pumpkinpie1 · 12/03/2020 17:01

Boris make the right or any decision .... you kidding
The man’s a menace
For the last 10 years his party has been waging a war on the sick and disabled in this country, who are those most likely to die from this virus . So why would they suddenly start caring what happens to them now.

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:01

The press conferences is on BBC live. I'm watching it and typing as he speaks.

Sarahlou63 · 12/03/2020 17:02

Elderly people with health problems should not take cruises. Fucking brilliant Sad

Dissimilitude · 12/03/2020 17:03

I understand a lot of you hate Boris, but Sturgeon has arrived at the same conclusion on schools, and it's based on the common advice of the chief medical and scientific officers.

Why do you think you know better than them?

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:03

He's asking everyone to think about elderly relatives and what we can do to help protect them over the next few months.

themental · 12/03/2020 17:03

Wait.... are we doing nothing??

Why is "the best scientific advice" always getting quoted?

Is the rest of the world listening to the second-best scientific advice?

I thought the good thing about science was that it was factual and not open to interpretation....

MillieMoodle · 12/03/2020 17:04

He's reminding us to wash our hands. If things seem tough now, we will get through this just as we have done with tough times in the past.
