Travel Insurance

Hi Everyone

I thought I'd just impart the information I've just had from my insurer. We're due to travel to the US over the Easter holidays (and my DD is due to be on a school trip to mainland Europe the week before we travel). Obviously Trump's ban currently excludes the UK, but I wanted to know what would happen if the ban were extended, and whether I should take out any additional cover on my current policy now.

So, we're covered if the FCO recommend no travel, fine. If we catch it while away or need to be quarantined, covered. Check. However, we are NOT covered because a country decides we won't be allowed entry to their country. So if we lived in France, we would not be covered. Hopefully our flights would be either refunded or we could reschedule, but our booked villa would not be covered, our car hire potentially wouldn't be covered etc etc.

I enquired if there was any additional insurance I could buy to cover this eventuality and was told there was no product available.

Just thought I'd share.

You should contact the travel provider and ask if you can rebook for a later date. I personally don’t have travel booked but I know that Virgin are offering free rebookings for Easter holidays.

I'm still assuming we're travelling for now - it's still 3.5 weeks before we're due to fly, and things are changing hour by hour - we may lockdown for 2 weeks and then be reopened, so I'm not making any drastic decisions just now, but I am trying to keep fully informed.

Obviously our costs are largely sunk now anyway (so we're not "losing" money), but I found it interesting that we wouldn't be covered when banned from a destination country.
