To still go to the USA?

Due to go to NYC in a few weeks. Now that Trump is banning European countries DH is worried if we go, he could add on the UK to the ban and we get stuck in the states.
DH also worried that the US gov is not taking this seriously and that we'd be worse off there than here if one of us is taken ill ( 2 x DCs going too).
BUT if we decide not to go, then we lose the money ( as there's no advice NOT to go to the US from the government here, travel insurance won't kick in)
I want to go. I think we'll all get it eventually anyway. So YABU - Don't go, sod the cost. YANBU - go, DH is over-reacting

can you afford 100k for intensive care treatment in the worst case if you get ill there?
tbh I would wait how it develops, but it looks like a travel ban is more likely than not.

TaxFool · 12/03/2020 09:26

Can you afford potentially a month or more accommodation and living costs in the USA if you get stuck there? Can you afford to potentially not be paid for being off work unexpectedly? Do you have very good health insurance? If yes, then go for it. I wouldn't be going.

Fluffybutter · 12/03/2020 09:27

No one knows what will happen next week ,let alone a few weeks .
if the government tell you not to travel after this cobra meeting today then you’ll be entitled to your money back on flights etc.. or atleast to move them.
If you travelled and got caught out then your insurance 9/10 wouldn’t cover you

Apolloanddaphne · 12/03/2020 09:27

We were supposed to be going on Monday but we have cancelled. I don't want to be stuck there if they go into lockdown as things are still very much an unknown quantity right now. However as you are not going for a few weeks I would wait and see how things pan out. If it gets a lot worse you may not be allowed to travel anyway and could claim on your insurance. If things stabilise you can go and enjoy yourself.

PointlessUsername · 12/03/2020 09:30

I wouldn't risk it.

Chouxalacreme · 12/03/2020 09:31

You’re just as likely to catch something on the plane also as they are notorious

rockingmass · 12/03/2020 09:32

We do have excellent travel insurance ( we're in the US a lot) that will cover any medical care costs in the US, even from Coronavirus, so we're not worried about medical bills. But DH is worried about their health care coping if there's mass outbreaks.

Accommodation wise, if we got stuck, we can stay for free with family. We'll be mostly staying with family this trip anyway after the first 5 days.

By the time your trip comes I’m pretty sure the Uk and Ireland will be included in the ban

rockingmass · 12/03/2020 09:37

HermanHermit - I actually hope so, sick of the uncertainty, but there's no logic to Trump and his decision making so who knows.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 12/03/2020 09:47

Trump is stopping Europeans going into the US, and there's a possibility he might extend that to the UK. He's not stopping non-US citizens leaving the US. Most airlines are still flying if they're solvent as Heathrow in particular has a 'use it or lose it' rule on runway slots, so planes are often in the air even when they're empty.

I'm due to go to NYC next Wednesday so watching things very closely.

HermanHermit · 12/03/2020 09:47

You’d also presumably get insurance cover (or be more likely to policy dependent) if that happpens. Essentially, I wouldn’t make any decision yet

abigailsnan · 12/03/2020 09:48

I wouldn't take the risk if you get infected your whole family including who are staying with will be quarrentened won't they which will make you very popular I'm sure what is money compared to your health,my DD and I have cancelled our yearly girly trip in April and will wait and see the outcome.

dottiedodah · 12/03/2020 09:50

I would wait and see how it pans out in the next few weeks .ATM my DS and his GF are also due to travel in April as well .DT may decide to shut the door to UK citizens ,he may not .If he does you can claim your money back .DS will probably still be going ,but hes in his 20s with no children .As you have family there, then you would be able to stay with them if ill presumably.I know someone whose son had it (lives and works in Italy)and said its just like Flu ,however with children as well its a difficult one to call I think .Sadly in US only people with health Insurance would be eligible for help anyway ,so US health would be less stretched than US.A terrible thing to say but thats the reality .

0hT00dles · 12/03/2020 09:51

I'd wait and see, because it's only a matter of time before the uk and ireland will be included.

If you're staying in a hotel, that would be the biggest thing-hygiene issues.

Spied · 12/03/2020 09:53

Your DH will be an anxious mess.
So would I.
Don't go.

rockingmass · 12/03/2020 10:26

Spied, yeah you might have a point! Now saying it's the plane that's the most worrying...

A lot can change in a few weeks. There’s a big chance a travel ban will be set in place in the next few days to be honest.

sunshineandlollypops · 12/03/2020 10:46

Check with your travel insurance provider to make sure that you will be covered. I definitely wouldn't be going to the States if insurance is declared null and void during this pandemic.

20viona · 12/03/2020 10:55

I'm Supposed to be going to NY on Tuesday at this stage I would rather a decision was taken out of my hands and it was cancelled. My husband is burying his head in the sand and saying it will be fine but we are leaving out 8 month old in grandparent care while we go so I worry about the knock-on effect.

Bumshkawahwah · 12/03/2020 11:04

I was just listening to Martin Lewis on This Morning and apparently must travel insurers WON’T necessarily cover a holiday cancellation just because Donald Trump bans your flights from entering the US, only if the FCO issue a travel advisory for the US. I was pretty surprised at that.

shinyredbus · 12/03/2020 11:08

If it’s critical for you to go fine - but if just holiday I wouldn’t.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 12/03/2020 11:15

Accommodation wise, if we got stuck, we can stay for free with family.

How? You’d have to self-isolate. Factor in costs for extra weeks (not just two either, if the worst happens one of your family could still catch it when another member of the family is coming out of their quarantined time)

We are going to see and stay with family. If we all got quarantined in their town Or there was a travel ban in place then we would stay there, I can’t see them chucking their kids/grandkids out!
Their house is actually big enough for isolation from family members anyways, different floors, different entrances and loads of bathrooms.

Your insurance says it specifically covers Covid-19?
We have very good travel insurance, also travel to the states often but ours does not state this so i’d phone them to find out exactly what they will cover in the event you get ill
