To still go to the USA?

rockingmass · 12/03/2020 09:21

Due to go to NYC in a few weeks. Now that Trump is banning European countries DH is worried if we go, he could add on the UK to the ban and we get stuck in the states.
DH also worried that the US gov is not taking this seriously and that we'd be worse off there than here if one of us is taken ill ( 2 x DCs going too).
BUT if we decide not to go, then we lose the money ( as there's no advice NOT to go to the US from the government here, travel insurance won't kick in)
I want to go. I think we'll all get it eventually anyway. So YABU - Don't go, sod the cost. YANBU - go, DH is over-reacting

Only US citizens and legal residents are now allowed to fly here from the UK.

www.cnn.com/2020/03/14/politics/uk-ireland-travel-restrictions-coronavirus/index.html

Expect it to last at least a month.

I'm a New Yorker. We'd love to have you, but I think it's best if you reschedule.

BA is still saying our Easter flight to US is going ahead, despite the ban from Trump. So no refund. How does that work then??

They won't allow you to board without a US passport or green card.

The flight might run, but you won't be on it. US citizens are still allowed back into the country.

The reports from international airports in the US yesterday were that there were 4-6 hour queues because people were being screened so aggressively.

HoldMyLobster · 16/03/2020 15:04

I would not be flying into the US right now, and I'm an American. Those queues are terrifying. They're not even separating the people who are known to have Covid-19 from everyone else.

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/03/15/chaos-dulles-airport-shows-how-not-handle-pandemic/

"When I asked a security guard about the other lines, he told me they were for people with a confirmed corona diagnosis. There was no separation for this group — no plastic sheets, not even a bit of distance. When your line snaked to the left, you were inches away from the infected."

It sounds like BA are being a bit thick about this. It's their responsibility to ensure that you're eligible to enter the US when they fly you there. If you're not they have to fly you home at your expense. They should just refund whatever you've paid for the flight as they'll not let you on it.

Trump only announced the ban yesterday - maybe give them a bit longer to sort it out, given PP's fight isn't for another few weeks?

HoldMyLobster · 16/03/2020 15:14

Um, no. An airline should not be insisting a flight will definitely go ahead, even if they only got the info about the ban two days ago. It's their job to understand who they can and cannot put on flights.

Travel by UK citizens has quite clearly been banned for 30 days - there is absolutely no way BA can insist you will be allowed into the country, or put you on that flight.

willowpatterns · 16/03/2020 15:19

Wherever you are going, you might get on the plane, fly all the way there, and find yourself turned round and firmly marched right back onto the same aircraft and sent back again. As happened to my friend who flew to India (and back) the other day.

MissConductUS · 16/03/2020 15:26

f you're not they have to fly you home at your expense

Sorry, that should have read at their expense.

Chemenger · 16/03/2020 15:28

British Airways have said that all flights between 14th March and 31st May can be changed to a later date, at no charge, to any date within the next 12 months for the same destination (you will pay the difference in fare if you go at a higher cost time but no admin charges etc) or you can get a voucher and go somewhere else. You can make the changes or request the voucher online.

Stay away at all costs. My husband's boss has two sons who are surgeons in NYC. They rang and put the fear if god in their dad, enough to akke him close the lab for the first time in 50 years and not come in at all. And we don't even live in NY. They said already hosputals are struggling, ICUs are full and operations are cancelled except emergency. They said NYC is totally screwed already beyond what is in the news and we will be a week or two behind.

Philly's ICUs are at 80% capacity already and our city atill claims to only have a handful of cases. It is bull. Also flu is still rampant over here... before corona virus was even a thing 3 weeks ago we had to wait 6 hours in ER waiting room for an asthma treatment, with my husband using the oxygen in the waiting room because no rooms were available in the whole hospital for respiratory trouble. Because of seasonal flu. The country will be in real trouble in 2 weeks. Stay away for your own sake.

Darbs76 · 16/03/2020 22:26

In a few weeks, no. Probably be cancelled anyway

lljkk · 16/03/2020 22:30

It's all happening so fast. I was supposed to be abroad tonite but my return train (Eurostar tomorrow) is now cancelled. Any Fing thing could happen.
