To still go to the USA?

Due to go to NYC in a few weeks. Now that Trump is banning European countries DH is worried if we go, he could add on the UK to the ban and we get stuck in the states.
DH also worried that the US gov is not taking this seriously and that we'd be worse off there than here if one of us is taken ill ( 2 x DCs going too).
BUT if we decide not to go, then we lose the money ( as there's no advice NOT to go to the US from the government here, travel insurance won't kick in)
I want to go. I think we'll all get it eventually anyway. So YABU - Don't go, sod the cost. YANBU - go, DH is over-reacting

Check your travel insurance very carefully. Some exclude for pandemics so while policies might have covered for Covid-19 a week ago they wouldn’t now.

Jespers · 12/03/2020 11:59

most providers are providing cover for those who already had insurance but not new customers - LV isn't even offering insurance to new travellers now, Insure and Go won't cover Covid claims for any new policy from last midnight.

Clangus00 · 12/03/2020 12:05

No I wouldn’t.

Iloveplacentas · 12/03/2020 12:09

I’ve also got a trip to NYC booked at the end of March. Not making a decision now, but I think it will be likely that the travel ban will be extended to UK. Just got to wait and see.

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 12/03/2020 12:14

Lots of people in a similar situation...also waiting to see how it develops

heyjoeyitsestelle · 12/03/2020 12:28

We're due to fly early April. Not cancelling tbh- will still go if able to

Same here.

Alwaysoverthinkingit34 · 12/03/2020 13:41

We fly to Orlando next week. Looking forward to it but anxious about it at the same time!

heyjoeyitsestelle · 12/03/2020 13:52

All booked separately. Flights allowing rebooking if needed and insurance cover for accommodation. Disney tickets last a year.

TheSparklyPussycat · 12/03/2020 14:02

Perhaps the insurance companies will be asserting that this is an Act of Trump God.

heyjoeyitsestelle · 12/03/2020 14:19

@Hagbeth I read this earlier but it's not clear is it. If I or a family member get this virus whilst over there then our medical bills are covered.
If we have to quarantine for 2 weeks we will be able to afford a place to stay.
I highly doubt we'll be stuck and not allowed to fly home. It's everywhere now anyway

NemophilistRebel · 12/03/2020 14:31

Based on the small amount of tests USA are carrying out and the proportion of that to deaths it’s quite obvious that they have a far worse problem with Covid-19 than probably any Europe’s he country right now

I would not go

NemophilistRebel · 12/03/2020 14:33

You’ll be stuck out there if the planes stop though

Italians are currently stuck in U.K. not able to get back so it’s not just the risk of what USA would do but risk of what U.K. would do

If U.K. goes full in to delay mode and travel bans are in place then they won’t be accepting flights inbound

Butterwhy · 12/03/2020 14:41

No. It is likely that travel will become a nightmare, I wouldn't want to be at the mercy of American healthcare with just travel insurance which will likely not cover this.

Durgasarrow · 12/03/2020 15:01

I live in the U.S., I love the U.S., and normally I would highly recommend it. But I also just came back from Italy. And it felt scary to come back from a country that was just shutting down from coronavirus. Things are shutting down very quickly here as they are other places. IYou don't want to be stuck far from home.

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 14/03/2020 17:28

Looks like the decision has been made

Mummyshark2019 · 14/03/2020 17:29

Oh my god. No travel at all at this time. Your health is more important.

TheFuckingDogs · 14/03/2020 17:30

Yep 😕

strivingtosucceed · 14/03/2020 18:31

Seeing as trump has indeed banned travel from the UK from Monday, I don't think you have a choice in the matter.

Durgasarrow · 14/03/2020 23:31

So sorry. This is an awful time.

SoloMummy · 15/03/2020 00:02

You won't be going. UK is on banned list.

Notimeforaname · 15/03/2020 00:13

Yep. Not gonna happen for you unfortunately

Esspee · 15/03/2020 00:17

Don't be upset that you can't go, getting ill in the USA is very expensive.

Jespers · 16/03/2020 14:34

BA is still saying our Easter flight to US is going ahead, despite the ban from Trump. So no refund. How does that work then?? They still put the flight on and we don't get our money back even though we wouldn't be allowed to enter the USA as we are UK citizens so would be pointless to get on the plane.
