First high profile case?

I feel this may shaken the "it's just flu" types

I feel this may shaken the "it's just flu" types.

Why would it?

It’s more likely that the “it’s just flu” types would be shaken up by a close friend catching it and being seriously ill. Not an American actor in Australia who doesn’t appear to be particularly unwell.

Off the point but she's 63? Wow, she looks fantastic.

@PurpleDaisies The idea that anyone can get it.
Another speaking publicly.
The idea that it's not a myth.

I think you’re really reaching with that.

I mean seriously, who will think “now Tom Hanks has got it, it must be really bad!”?!!!

It certainly makes everyone realise that a novel virus sure doesn’t pick and choose. I’m sad to hear he, his wife, or anyone has got this.
The problem is, nobody can say how badly it will affect them.
One guy’s ‘it’s no worse than the flu’ is another guy’s nail in the coffin.

I believe Tom Hanks is diabetic as well.

Love how the article just lists his accomplishments not Ritas...

The reality is that for fit able people the symptoms are mildish. Hopefully people will see that and stop running around like headless chickens

It's like other people don't matter.

Key work being 'other'. People say all to ready that it's only the old/unwell who get it badly (rather than that they are at higher risk). And that 'only' makes a difference.

This is 'only' another 63yo.

Why does this coverage matter? Because we feel we know celebs, and because it shows that actually the groups at higher risk aren't 'other', they're real people.

(Apologies for po-faced post this early in the morning Brew )

@PurpleDaisies I thought it would be self-explanatory.
When Caroline Flack died what happened? #bekind, suicide awareness. If it happens to a well known person it can happen to anyone.
No reaching.

I feel this may shaken the "it's just flu" types.

In what way? Presumably Mr and Mrs Hanks could also catch flu?

@PurpleDaisies it's a comparison.
People deny corona. People deny mental health crisis.

@YgritteSnow Their thought process is that it isn't as severe as the media is portraying it, that only elderly are at risk.
Here we have famous celeb and wife who catch the virus. Money can't protect you.

Who is denying coronavirus exists? Tom Hanks appears to have a mild case, very similar to if he had flu.

All that applies to flu too. It just wouldn't make the papers would it?

I found it reassuring that he had said they have it and are not that unwell. We need some balance in the reporting.

Well of course anyone can get it. Very soon loads of us will get it. I’m not sure Tom Hanks will have an effect.

The flu comparison is from people in denial. It’s not a flu. A comparison with pneumonia would be more apt.

isabellerossignol · 12/03/2020 07:15

No one has denied corona virus surely?

What people have said is that it's got a death rate that is only slightly worse than a particularly bad flu season.

Of course it's worrying, and of course people don't want to catch it. And it is particularly worrying for those who are vulnerable.

But no one is denying it will affect people.

@PurpleDaisies conspiracy theorists or people denying the impact.
You're saying you haven't seen threads where people are only worried about the elderly?

Lots think it will only affect the elderly.

shopgirl. Pneumonia is not a virus. It is causes by lots of things. Flu is one of the causes of pneumonia.
