Can we do a lighthearted thread?

I am as worried and terrified as the next person but wondered if a lighthearted thread would help to ease the stress?

On a lighter note, we have no chocolate or crisps at home, hoping to rectify this in the next few days Grin but how does one refrain from eating the apocalypse supplies?! Grin

Tinned potatoes are fab in curries and stews. Saves loads of time. I've even made fishcakes with them.

My 83 year old mum has queried what she should stockpile as she dislikes pasta or tinned tomatoes and she's got loo rolls. She's settled on copious amounts of Cadburys chocolate, bottles of M&S Bucks Fizz and she's settling in with the telly and her Vera Lynn CD (maintaining the wartime spirit)!

@MinesaPinot SHE SOUNDS AMAZING Grin

I was just going to post the same as honeysuckle - tinned potatoes are great in curries. I made a tinned potato, chickpea and spinach curry a few weeks ago; dp was extremely sceptical about the potatoes but they were fabulous.

I am stocking up on Wispas and Tesco's delicious Picpoul de Pinet.

I’m a child of the 70s, my dad used to stockpile tins of fruit cocktail and lychees (FFS) in the upstairs cupboard. And the occasional tin of black cherries in syrup.

Every time there was a power cut he’d run upstairs and come down triumphantly brandishing a rusty tin or two.

Ooh I do miss him.

Some good news at least - now that I have to work from home I'm saving two hours travel time every day

Wereonabearhunt · 11/03/2020 19:47

Ive just seen on the news that washing up liquid is more effective at protecting against the virus than alcohol sanitiser.. may need a late night trip to stock up before people stary bathing in fairyliquid!

Snowpatrolling · 11/03/2020 19:49

I’m on a zero hours contract so don’t get sick pay, work have now introduces full sick pay from the first day if anyone is confirmed to have corona virus, so I have stocked up on toilet roll and freezer stuff and have been licking door handles! Wish me luck!!!

Magpiecomplex · 11/03/2020 19:50

I was tickled yesterday to see that the local Sainsbury's was totally out of white flour, but still had plenty of wholemeal... It may be the apocalypse but standards must be maintained, clearly!

I bought wholemeal...

People working in pharmacy have to keep the lighthearted tone up. Only way to survive at the moment after getting abuse for not having hand gel or masks

Dh did the weekly shop this week. I suggested getting a few extra packets of biscuits etc just in case. He got 2 packets. There are 5 of us. They will last about 10 minutes! He also came home and told me that there was loads of bread. Whole aisle full of it apparently. Did he buy any? No!

Apirateslifeforme · 11/03/2020 19:58

I'm worried where the dogs gonna piss and shit of were quarantined for the CV.

Also considering putting the lazy spa back up, if we might be trapped at home, and I cant do my swimming!

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 11/03/2020 20:01

We have always had a good month of extra food in our cupboards. It comes from a time we suddenly got stuck.
We have a billion bags of pasta, 10 billion tinned tomatos a tall freezer and a chest freezer jam packed!
DD has just been diagnosed with Coeliac! Even without coronavirus we would have bulk bought a load of gluten free pasta and goodies for her! We now look like we are panic buying...we are not!

And just to make you eye roll, smile or give you a great idea new idea for face mask...

Anyone else’s hands sore from all the washing? My knuckles are red raw

Ricekrispie22 · 11/03/2020 20:34

My dc think it’s hilarious singing Happy Birthday at the top of their voice every time they wash their hands. It’s starting to get on my nerves.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 11/03/2020 21:14

@sigmu87 I have always been big on hand washing. My hands are softer than ever though.
My routine when I get to a sink is hand wash, dry completely, hand gel, dry completely then lots if hand cream.

Northernsoullover · 11/03/2020 21:58

I sang happy birthday while washing my hands yesterday and when I got to the bit 'dear ..' I got in a tizz because I didn't know what to say. I settled on 'dear hands' which then meant all was well in the world again

ErrolTheDragon · 11/03/2020 22:44

This should cheer everyone up.

@Sparklingbrook, I’ve been outed! Was that you peering through my hedge with your long lens camera at tea time?

I went out and panic bought wine. Got home, felt smug, then panicked about what would happen if the bottle opener broke. Got back in car and went and panic bought spare bottle opener for back up for panic bought wine Grin

If I have to self isolate for 14 days I'm gonna read my way through Mumsnet Classics!

CoronaVera · 12/03/2020 01:37

You've reminded me of something.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition. Somewhere in Surrey so hardly the wilds of yonder.

We got lost. After about half an hour, a couple of our group, starting to panic, insisted on eating their 'emergency rations', which I can't remember but were probably Kendal mint cake.

Anyway, we all survived (and they didn't get told off for wasting their emergency supplies Biscuit).
