An AMA thread by a (genuine) UK physician

www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/fgfspi/im_a_critical_care_doctor_working_in_a_uk_hcid/

I think I am IANBU in thinking this is important and informative and should stay where is.

And I am happy if it will made even one person here to understand what is the whole fuss is about and stay at home with their entire family if they have symptoms and can at all afford it - before or after such measure is officially approved by the UK government.

OP posts:
devuskums · 11/03/2020 00:24

What do you think the general public should do at this point?

devuskums · 11/03/2020 00:25

Oops sorry I thought you were the critical care doctor on ama!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 11/03/2020 00:27

Sorry but is this just a link to a reddit thread or are you actually a physician doing and AMA?

Thepigeonsarecoming · 11/03/2020 00:28

I don’t understand your question, you’ve provided a link but what’s the AIBU? Is someone wanting to remove the reddit thread?

Graphista · 11/03/2020 00:51

Are you answering questions here too or just posting the reddit thread?

Some of your answers there have me extremely concerned about 2 relatives, 1 in particular but their condition is pretty rare and I feel too outing to go into here. Would you be happy for me to pm you? I would be so grateful. But understand if you'd rather not. Also if you're ok to pm but don't want to say here you can pm me.

I am an active asthmatic. Currently on steroids and with both preventer and reliever inhalers. I had a bad bout of whooping cough a couple winters ago and have scarring on lungs from historic infections from as far back as childhood almost dying on one occasion and was raised in a heavy smoking household but have never smoked myself.

I'm housebound currently (well, over 2 years now) mainly due to mh issues so already self isolating to a degree though dependent on deliveries for food etc. I have ocd so I'm already a champion hand washer Grinbut also aware, probably more than most how easy it is to touch face etc and not realise.

The whole situation is getting increasingly worrying.

IntergalacticSuperstar · 11/03/2020 00:59

I don't think the poster actually is the AMA doctor, they're just re-posting the thread here. I read it earlier, very interesting stuff, but probably belongs in the CV topic?

Butterwhy · 11/03/2020 01:02

OP the Corona topic is there so people can hide it for a plethora of reasons, some being that they can't deal with it. It's not burying heads in the sand, but for some it's managing their anxiety to a tolerable level, it's not fair to post elsewhere for traffic in my opinion. Hopefully this gets moved.

theflushedzebra · 11/03/2020 01:03

I've seen that thread on twitter.

Are we really two weeks behind Italy, who had 165 deaths yesterday, or something?

Should we close the schools. We can' stay at home unless they do. I feel we should close the schools, with the possible exception of those doing GCSEs/A levels this year.

My son s doing his A levels this year, so I know how important this is.

MMN123 · 11/03/2020 01:10

ICU nurses are hard to come by at the best of times. Are coordinated efforts happening to identify those nurses with previous ICU experience who are no longer working in that specialism?

MMN123 · 11/03/2020 01:11

Oh is it just a link? Why?

NiteWotcha · 11/03/2020 01:11

I will ask MNHQ to move this to the Coronavirus topic - it doesn't seem to be an actual AMA, just alerting us to the reddit link.

@IsisCam OP, can you confirm that you are not here to respond to questions on COVID19?

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 11/03/2020 01:12

The OP is not a doctor! If you want to ask a question go to the reddit thread.

Furries · 11/03/2020 01:42

FFS - why would you post this title in such an ambiguous way. Firstly, people are going to think there is relevant info from a MN user. Secondly, the OP is going to be bombarded with tagged posts from people that don’t realise they’re not the flipping “UK physician”.

I’m going to be transparent and report this. OP - if you want whatever info is posted in there to be read - then a) post on the CV thread in health and b) make your title a bit more transparent.

ZombieFan · 11/03/2020 01:45

I would imagine a critical care doctor (in the middle of a global pandemic) wouldn't have the time to be answering questions from random internet people.

Nekoness · 11/03/2020 01:47

It’s “AN AMA thread on reddit”

Because reddit verifies in real life the poster is who he/she/they claim to be.

On this site, anyone can pretend to be an expert.

I just finished reading that thread - it’s incredibly informative and honest.

Butterwhy · 11/03/2020 01:49

@ZombieFan being UK based I doubt he is overly busy with Corona stuff, yet.

NiteWotcha · 11/03/2020 01:49

Zombie the doctor on the Reddit thread seemed to have the time...Wink

but yeah, most doctors will be a bit too busy these days.

Nekoness · 11/03/2020 01:49

@Furries, it’s perfectly clear from the title. Pay attention instead of blaming the OP because you can’t be arsed to read.

ZombieFan · 11/03/2020 01:50

Because reddit verifies in real life the poster is who he/she/they claim to be

😂🤣😅😂🤣😅 I have posted on reddit many times, they have never once verified who I was.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 11/03/2020 01:50

@nekoness I do believe it’s a genuine post on reddit, but the post here is confusing.

user1473878824 · 11/03/2020 01:53

We aren’t in a pandemic yet, just to be clear.

DivGirl · 11/03/2020 02:10

@ZombieFan For AMAs they are verified and usually post the proof. On this one the Doc has chosen to remain anonymous but has sent his proof to Reddit. There's a stickied post on that thread from one of the admins, which you'd know if you had read it.

Furries · 11/03/2020 02:23

@Nekoness - it’s not that I can’t be arsed to read. It’s that the title is misleading. The poster is not the UK physician, but the title could make people think that. And sorry, but I call Billy on Reddit being able to 100% verify the career of every flipping poster on their site.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 11/03/2020 02:41

I agree, what was the point here @furries

Furries · 11/03/2020 03:23

@thepigeonsarecoming - honestly, no idea apart from people not thinking about how things are worded, and that’s me being generous!

Unless you mean what was the point of my post 🤣
