Why are people so dim?!

I’ve just had to attend out of hours - it really couldn’t wait - and on arrival minor injuries was lockdown for deep cleaning because someone had just shown up with flu like symptoms after returning from Italy in the last week or so. I mean there are signs outside the hospital. Inside the hospital. Everywhere.
So they’d closed it and moved everyone up from MI to OOH - and they had to take details from people who had been sat in the waiting area with him because if he has it they’ve also been potentially exposed. Then they announced they were also closing OOH because staff from MI had been up and down the corridors so they were going to deep clean the whole lot.

This is why we are done for. People cannot follow advice to stay area and go and sit in busy waiting rooms, ignoring signs expressly telling them not to do precisely that.

People just don't pay attention to messages and posters. Well, some don't. Must be so frustrating for the authorities.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 10/03/2020 22:03

Some people are seriously lacking awareness...and common sense.

Butterbear86 · 10/03/2020 22:03

I feel like they should charge them for the cost of the deep clean.
Also people had to then go to other hospitals who are probably already at capacity because ours has closed whilst the clean happens.

Somewhere between five and nine million UK adults (depending on your source) are functionally illiterate. Stupity carries a huge cost for the rest of us. (Not least we still let them vote.)

BloomedAgain · 10/03/2020 22:06

I think some can't get it into their heads that covid19 is really everywhere and it could indeed happen to them. Really thoughtless.

ScouseMar · 10/03/2020 22:13

Maybe dim but maybe just utterly selfish and thinking only about themselves- presenting at a busy A&E because they want to be seen and sod everyone else (who they may infect).

Honestly I've been so disappointed in the 'me me me' attitudes seen recently (selling handget on eBay for profit, buying ridiculous amounts in supermarkets so there's little left for the elderly or vulnerable).

LizzieSiddal · 10/03/2020 22:15

A lot of people in this country don’t follow expert advice. It’s how we ended up with Brexit.

Michaelbaubles · 10/03/2020 22:16

Basically everyone on here who thinks they might have it is told it’s super rare, there’s still hardly any cases and they’ve just got a cold, not the flu or they couldn’t be posting.

I dare say that person’s friends told them the same thing.

CatherineCawood · 10/03/2020 22:18

I really think you can't rely on the public. So, they should have someone stationed at the exit/entrance (all other exits closed) in a hazmat suit asking people WHY they are attending A and E. If it is for suspected COVID19 then they get carted off to the separate section for assessment.

Mulhollandmagoo · 10/03/2020 22:20

@LizzieSiddal I couldn't have put it better myself 😂😂

This is why GP's and OOH are doing telephone consultations only now because people aren't listening to the advice given, it's so frustrating

Reginabambina · 10/03/2020 22:23

To be fair there seems to be little to no advice being given to people coming from Italy. And 111 is notorious for giving bad advice so some people wouldn’t trust it. The government is just as much at fault here, they can’t expect everyone to be sensible, they should be motivating against idiocy.

CalmYoBadSelf · 10/03/2020 22:25

One of our local surgeries actually had someone symptomatic ask for an urgent appointment after answering all questions about travel with No. In the appointment they then admitted they had been abroad but had lied as they wanted to be seen for reassurance their symptoms weren't COVID. Luckily their symptoms were not in line with it but they didn't know that and the selfishness of idiots like that is what could sink us all

Moomin8 · 10/03/2020 22:28

Never a truer word said...

RedDiamond · 10/03/2020 22:31

Maybe they were frightened? They have just come from a Country that is all over the news which is reporting lots of deaths. I should imagine, if you thought you might die without intensive medical assistance, you would not be thinking of other people, especially if you had a fever which could impair your normal logical thinking.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 22:32

I know this is shocking but some don’t even read or listen to the news. Let alone what was happening in China a month ago.

shushymcshush · 10/03/2020 22:32

Because some people can't read
Because some people are panicking
Because some people have anxiety
Because some people are drama llamas
Because some just focus on themselves
Because phone lines & surgeries are swamped and people don't know what to do
Mixed messages in media, NHS 111 etc

Cherrysherbet · 10/03/2020 22:33

People are so thick. Exactly why this will continue to spread...

FizzyPink · 10/03/2020 22:35

Someone came into work today in our office after their husband has tested positive. The whole building had to be evacuated for deep cleaning 🙄

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 22:37

Someone came back from Italy last week and delivered some food to our office Shock

Shimy · 10/03/2020 22:41

Can anyone answer this? What happens if you devolop a cold with shortness of breath? Apart from dialling 111, what does one do about about the breathing difficulties?

AutumnRose1 · 10/03/2020 22:42

turnedouttoes

I'm curious to know what happened. Did she just casually say "my DH has it" and really not know the implications?

CaptainNelson · 10/03/2020 22:43

Friend of mine told me about someone who went out with his mates and halfway through the evening announced that he'd just come back from Italy. Didn't think to mention it before they met up. Mates are now self-quarantined.
People always think it doesn't apply to them.

endofthelinefinally · 10/03/2020 22:43

I honestly think stupidity and selfishness is far more prevalent these days than it used to be. You see it in every area of life, schools, work places, shops, theatres, cinemas, universities. It is depressing.

Greenandpleasanter · 10/03/2020 22:43

I think it's far more likely to be selfishness than being dim. There's so many people in this country now that think the rules just apply to other people and not to them. It's why hardly anyone uses their indicators when driving, why politicians blatantly lie and get away with it. It's a sense of entitlement, and given that those who run the country also have it, why should anyone else be any different. The problem is with Covid-19, they could result in causing someone's death by turning up to hospitals where people could be physically vulnerable already and giving them the virus.

HonestlyItsFine · 10/03/2020 22:44

I suppose if it's severe and an emergency you'd call 999 as usual- and tell them that you think you may have the virus, if you do think that.
