Why are people so dim?!

I’ve just had to attend out of hours - it really couldn’t wait - and on arrival minor injuries was lockdown for deep cleaning because someone had just shown up with flu like symptoms after returning from Italy in the last week or so. I mean there are signs outside the hospital. Inside the hospital. Everywhere.
So they’d closed it and moved everyone up from MI to OOH - and they had to take details from people who had been sat in the waiting area with him because if he has it they’ve also been potentially exposed. Then they announced they were also closing OOH because staff from MI had been up and down the corridors so they were going to deep clean the whole lot.

This is why we are done for. People cannot follow advice to stay area and go and sit in busy waiting rooms, ignoring signs expressly telling them not to do precisely that.

@shimy
As I understand it, you tell 111 that you're having breathing difficulties, and they will then tell you what to do. Just don't go to A&E/GP surgery/work/school ...

HonestlyItsFine · 10/03/2020 22:46

An to answer the point of the thread- because people can't think past themselves. It's why there is no loo roll or soap in the shops. "I'm alright Jack" attitude. Never mind the people who can only get to the supermarket once a week or rely on home delivery slots that aren't there.
They probably just wanted to be seen, and couldn't think past that.

Tistheseason17 · 10/03/2020 22:46

So, we had a chap who was asked about travel/contact and he said, No - but when we directed him to a pharmacy he changed his mind and announced he'd been working with someone who had been diagnosed- total idiot who was prepared to lie to get what he wanted. Dim is an understatement.

Shimy · 10/03/2020 22:47

I have a history of asthma and the thought of not being able to breath makes me hyperventilate.

ELM8 · 10/03/2020 22:48

Exactly what @CatherineCawood said - people can't be trusted so man the entrances to triage symptoms and stop these people even coming in.

Unfortunately I think the panic has caused survival instinct to kick in with a lot of people, hence the ridiculous stockpiling of resources that are needed for the vulnerable and health workers etc.

Ginfordinner · 10/03/2020 22:48

Some GP practices have stopped taking online bookings so the receptionist can triage everyone making an appointment.

I had to ring yesterday and when she picked up the phone the first thing I told her was that I wasn't ringing about coronavirus. She sounded rather relieved.

News flash. The health minister has just tested positive for coronavirus.

Shimy · 10/03/2020 22:48

@HonestlyItsFine & @CaptainNelson thank you.

Becca19962014 · 10/03/2020 22:48

Because they think it's just a nasty cold/bit of flu.

I sat in an appointment yesterday suspecting it would, for me, be life threatening and frightened wanted to discuss it, and, the person (social worker) I was seeing laughed in my face. Literally. Last night I had an email confirming I should seriously consider isolating despite no symptoms because I'd stand no chance if I got it given how ill I am.

My health board (am in Wales) have decided not to bother opening a testing centre within two hours of where I live because "it's unnecessary". Then following that state under no circumstances should anyone go to the test centre without an appointment, and must (in capitals, underlined and in bold) drive themselves and only them to be in the car. No lifts, no taxis, no buses, no walking, no interaction at all with anyone else. They are seriously expecting people to drive themselves all that way which includes one of the most dangerous roads in the uk, with potentially serious flu like symptoms.

And, that's been reposted all over social media by the police.
Because what could possibly go wrong with that advice?!?

What chance do other people have when those, supposedly who know better, are so stupid.

I've been slammed on social media for being thick. It won't come here, so mid Wales has some sort of immunity Hmm and of course people can drive Hmm.

TimeForPlentyIn2020 · 10/03/2020 22:50

‘buying ridiculous amounts in supermarkets so there's little left for the elderly or vulnerable‘ to be fair it could well be the elderly and the vulnerable who are sticking up. They’re not all saints!

PickAChew · 10/03/2020 22:50

Shimy if 111 isn't working for you, for any reason, i guess you'd phone your GP and ask for a phone appointment, though you would probably end up being referred to the same process of checking and possible testing, if you were on the list, as if you had phoned 111. People who are possibly infected but ambulant appear to be sent to coronavirus "pods" on hospital grounds for testing.

Supersimkin2 · 10/03/2020 22:51

Nadine Dorries will be even more useful now she's got corona.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/03/2020 22:52

I have also seen people on here talking about going on holiday to a cottage in rural Wales, instead of abroad. Not thinking or caring that if they are carrying the virus, they are bringing it to a rural community with hospitals an hour away at best, hardly any beds, and a much older population.

Sunflower20 · 10/03/2020 22:52

I read on BBC news that one of the patients who died of coronavirus (RIP) had returned from Italy and turned up to his GP surgery with a face mask on for a ROUTINE appointment! Lost for words.

millymaud · 10/03/2020 22:53

It might be goaty that in the eyes of God the ‘stupid’ people are worth more than you are.

GabsAlot · 10/03/2020 22:54

It annoys me so much how many times do they have to say ring first if you have symptoms-walking into a hpsital is one of the stupidiest things ive heard

nadine dorries has covid

JKScot4 · 10/03/2020 22:55

Driving with flu like symptoms is unlikely to impair your ability to drive safely; that is overreacting, also people will go before they’re seriously unwell.
If you self isolate with no symptoms, how long for? You could do 2 weeks come out and catch it.

Devlesko · 10/03/2020 22:56

Yep, going on holiday, panic buying, believing the hype, not self isolating, the list is endless.

endofthelinefinally · 10/03/2020 22:56

I am immuno-suppressed and am constantly shocked at how selfish people are. This shortage of hand gel really affects me because I was advised to use it if I can't access washing facilities; I have been doing so for the last 4 years. I can't stay at home all the time, I am sick of people coughing and spluttering in all directions in public. I once found myself on a train within feet of a child with obvious chicken pox. People just don't care.

Mysocalledlifexx · 10/03/2020 22:57

Fine them £1,000 if they do this ,they are putting so many others at risk.

Shimy · 10/03/2020 22:59

Thanks @PickAChew I don’t actually have anything wrong now, just thinking ahead as I have no inhalers at home and can’t seem to get one from GPs, being wary of the fact once shortness of breath kicks in you can’t really think straight and panicking just makes it worse.

Ginfordinner · 10/03/2020 23:00

People are pinching sanitiser from hospitals and toilet rolls from public toilets! Hmm

This has turned out to be one of the most miserable winters ever.

NotStayingIn · 10/03/2020 23:08

In this case I think it’s a bit of dim mixed in with a lot of selfishness. Because these ‘dim’ people are never so stupid they don’t know how to act in their own best interests.

One quick pause to ask yourself ‘gosh could this be harmful to others?’ would have put a stop to it. But nope.

HonestlyItsFine · 10/03/2020 23:10

Shimy I think you can get an emergency inhaler from a pharmacy if you can't get one prescribed and you need it urgently:

Becca19962014 · 10/03/2020 23:11

sirvix that's exactly the worry that I have living where I do now that tourist season has begun and being an area tourists flock to. And given there are no hospitals testing in mid Wales at all the risk is huge to those of us living here unable to get to treatment given the loss of so many facilities.

We always struggle with shortages come start of March due to tourist season, even worse now.

Becca19962014 · 10/03/2020 23:13

Also, most services now are no longer available in mid Wales and people must travel to south or north wales or Shropshire for hospital care.
