So have we all given up on our Easter holiday bookings?

Haven’t had a holiday in so long and this Easter’s trip to Denmark has been booked since last Summer, I’m reluctantly coming to terms that we’re not going if things carry on as they are and stupidly because the country is so expensive we booked a non refundable hotel room to save money, that’ll teach us we’ve already been in touch with hotel and they’ve confirmed there’s nothing they’ll do regardless of the situation at the time

@KaptenKrusty especially for the kids why does everyone keep saying things like this - it’s yourself you’d want to especially for the kids why does everyone keep saying things like this - it’s yourself you’d want to be more worried about - kids are not the ones at risk here.

Our worry is that we (my partner and I) get ill and we are quite poorly, how would we be able to look after our kid on holiday.
In fact, that's my worry at home. But it would be easier at home surrounded by all his toys and books.

I have no idea what to do.. we are meant to be going to New York at the end of May. I swing between wanting to cancel and then thinking it’s here and there in the same amounts so what difference does it make! Genuinely don’t know what to do.

Poppydaisies · 11/03/2020 07:59

we are going because it’s all been paid for.

But surely your health and that of others is more important than a weeks' holiday?

funmummy48 · 11/03/2020 08:01

We're still going 👍

AuntieMarys · 11/03/2020 08:02

We are off to Greece in 8 weeks. Unless the FO say not to travel, we will be going.

KaptenKrusty · 11/03/2020 08:34

Thing is that you are as likely to get it here as you are on the holiday - and to lose thousands of pounds based on fear is not something i'm willing to do! i've saved up for a whole year and already paid for all the hotels, rail pass etc - not going would seem so extreme.

Titsywoo · 11/03/2020 08:46

We're going to cornwall so hopefully will be ok. May be busier than i expected though if people decide to holiday in the uk over the easter hols.

PrincessMargaret · 11/03/2020 08:53

We were booked for Italy. I have cancelled it. We have a weekend booked for Lisbon in May. I am hoping that can still go ahead.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 11/03/2020 09:04

What a big fat pain in the arse Sad

I think you can claw back some taxes on cancelled flights. Does anyone know how much that is?

crosspelican · 11/03/2020 09:06

We’re thinking of pulling the kids out of school & going early. Freelancers, so work is fine, and accommodation is also fine. Trying to decide what to do this morning.

crosspelican · 11/03/2020 09:07

So to answer your question more clearly - we’re definitely still going.

Like I said, it’s not going to the country that worries me, it is the airports, the airplanes and the the thought of getting quarantined over there - especially with two young children.

It’s much easier for me to avoid the virus here than mingling with potentially thousands of infected people in the English and Turkish airports and on the planes.

I also don’t want to get ill in a foreign country.

mummymayhem18 · 11/03/2020 09:14

My husband and daughter are supposed to be going to Florida for 2 weeks over the Easter holidays. They are desperately hoping it's not cancelled as it was booked a year ago and they are really looking forward to it. Unless advised not to go they will be going.

Poppydaisies · 11/03/2020 09:21

I think the situation in the US will get very bad. And Trump keeps downplaying it.

Reginabambina · 11/03/2020 09:24

Unless instructions are issued to self isolate I don’t see why you wouldn’t go. We’re planning a major trip over Easter but we’re waiting to book flights just incase there’s a restriction on travel/similar.

tenlittlecygnets · 11/03/2020 09:25

We're going to a remote cottage in Wales, so I hope that will still be OK.

potter5 · 11/03/2020 09:30

Flying to Australia via Singapore early April. Just had my return flight from Perth to Singapore changed by the airline. Presumably because they only need a smaller plane due to less people travelling from Oz to Singapore. However this means a layover at Singapore of 11 hours whilst we wait for our connecting flight to Heathrow!! Sad

Still, at the moment we are still flying out to Oz unless told otherwise.

Good luck to everyone with travel plans. Hope they go ahead and you all have a lovely break.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 11/03/2020 09:31

We’re due to go to Cornwall at Easter so hoping we should be ok to do that, unless we are on lockdown by then.

We are meant to be going to Rome in May not obviously that doesn’t look like it will happen

LBOCS2 · 11/03/2020 09:34

We're off to Crete at Easter and at the moment fully intend to go unless FCO advice drastically changes.

teenagetantrums · 11/03/2020 09:46

We just got home yesterday. I would go again at Easter if we had something booked. It's here anyway. We were in the canaries less cases there than here. I do t think there is more chance off catching it at the airport than a train station. However we have no health issues and no family or friends nearby who do either.
I thought the plane may be empty with people cancelling but was full.

Flippetydip · 11/03/2020 10:06

If the Foreign Office are saying dont travel, then insurance will cover it.

This is NOT true. I work in travel insurance and can tell you it totally depends on your travel insurance policy wording. Please check what you are covered for in terms of "Cancellation and Curtailment". There are only a few policies that say that you are covered for cancellation in the event of FCO advice.

KaptenKrusty · 11/03/2020 10:18

For consumers who had purchased travel insurance before the FCO published advice against travelling to the regions above and had booked travel that included visiting or passing through the areas on lock-down - they would expect that they will be covered for any irrecoverable unused travel and accommodation costs if they are forced to cancel their trip and any necessary extra travel costs if they have to cut their trip short or rearrange the journey.

*For people intending to travel to any of the affected areas since the FCO advice was given who have not yet bought a travel insurance policy or who bought it after the FCO advice was given, insurers are now excluding cover since the FCO is advising against travel. This is a standard response.

Please note, if you wish to cancel a planned trip outside the affected areas where the FCO has not issued advice against travel you are unlikely to be able to claim on your insurance*

KaptenKrusty · 11/03/2020 10:19

the above seems fairly standard - this is what my policy says - so im not covered now unless the FCO says I should not go - which is why I will not dare cancel the trip!

finn1020 · 11/03/2020 10:20

Yes we’ve given them up, were going from Australia to Morocco at Easter and cancelled yesterday. Still likely to lose about £2000 to £3000 but the risks of getting stuck in quarantine overseas for 7 people, or one of us being made to self isolate meaning we can’t take the flights at the last minute were getting too high with the potential to lose £15k if we couldn’t go at last minute. Near us today a University was shut down and 50 people have been directed to self isolate for 2 weeks. We expect this to increase for at least a few weeks before it starts to ease off. Not personally terribly concerned about any of us getting that sick from it but certainly don’t want to germ older relatives and friends with compromised immune systems.

worldsworststepfordwife · 11/03/2020 10:24

Flippetydip Exactly we certainly aren’t covered we discovered that yesterday, but our own fault for going on a comparison site last October and just buying some half decent yearly insurance without having a crystal ball and a fine tooth comb lol!!
