DCs school has coronavirus and they’re not shutting the school!?

My DCs school has had a confirmed case of coronavirus. One of their teachers who has been in school and has taught both DC this week!!!
School isn’t shutting! The DCs have been given information about the virus and symptoms to look out for.
This is really scaring me! Any of those DCs and other teachers could have it. Any of them could have gone home and passed it onto parents/grandparents/people who go to the same clubs in the community! I know it doesn’t really affect children as much as adults but doesn’t mean they can’t be carriers. We’re not exactly talking young children either. Both my DCs are teenagers.

Debating keeping the DC off school for the next 2 weeks? Am I overreacting!?

I'd keep my children off.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/03/2020 21:44

But it isn’t helpful to society, because children can then give it to their parents, who could die. So of course long term, having immunity is good, but in this case a vaccine would be the best and safest way to achieve it, as the risk to adults is too great.

Ugzbugz · 10/03/2020 21:46

But 2 weeks wont be long enough of school if they arent closing as it could keep multiplying so when is it safe to return????

justasking111 · 10/03/2020 21:46

A local gp surgery was closed for a deep clean, patient tested. Public health will not tell the gp if his patient tested positive for coronavirus, he is infuriated by this. I can see his point should he treat patients now or not.

Jerseygaly · 10/03/2020 21:48

Also how sick you get depends on viral load too. So an adult surrounded by loads of infected kids etc.
I think they want the kids to get it for herd immunity. But even so there is no reason it has to be so fast. If we overwhelm them the last people or even middle ones will die unnecessarily

Twillow · 10/03/2020 22:03

Just to say, the schools and universities in Italy had already been closed for a fortnight before they started the travel lockdown, so it clearly didn't have much of an impact.

MorganKitten · 10/03/2020 22:04

This is what it’s like in most London schools right now

Dusty01 · 10/03/2020 22:06

Are teachers more vulnerable to getting it badly because of viral overload?

mondaynoon · 10/03/2020 22:06

Hearing this just makes me want to keep my DC off school. Is this the school that told staff in the morning but not parents until the end of the day?

It feels like the government want people to catch it and whilst the children may only get a mild illness they can pass it on to others in the home.

OPTIMUMMY · 10/03/2020 22:09

@DixieFlatline , the OP hasn't stated which autoimmune condition - they're not all created equally and some can be serious and others cause respiratory issues which would be a major concern with this virus.
OP has already made it clear it's something they are careful with so I'd take it at face value that they know more about their child's health and the risk factors than we do.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 22:09

Many parents are in their 50s now days. This is the age group 8 doctors have just died in Iran.

Dont think kids without parents will be that helpful.

Luunaa · 10/03/2020 22:10

Worrying. I'd keep mine off if they were immunosuppressed. But my healthy DC would go in.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 22:10

Yes viral load is a thing.

BecauseReasons · 10/03/2020 22:11

Call in for sickness and you won't be fined. Say they have a dry cough and a temperature.

Schuyler · 10/03/2020 22:17

I’m very surprised the school isn’t being closed for a deep clean.
I think some people on here massively overreact but I don’t think you are at all. I’d be concerned as to why the school isn’t being deep cleaned, even if they don’t intend to close for a period of quarantine.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/03/2020 22:22

Yes. I am in my fifties, I have two dc under 16, youngest is only 12.
I very much want not to die and leave them without a Mum.

ConcernedForAGoodFriend · 10/03/2020 22:22

It sounds like we're really lucky at my DC's school. They announced to parents earlier this week that if they have to they will actively go against what they've been told to do and will deep clean and close indefinitely if any cases are found at the school. There are immunocompromised staff and children who attend and they have said they're not willing to put anyone's lives at risk, regardless of the consequences of disobeying orders!

All credit to them, they've been working incredibly hard and got a virtual learning environment set up and ready to go that pupils can access from home and are they're also busy putting further arrangements into place in case parents need extra support with childcare or pupils need additional study support for exams, etc.

Op, your child's health is more important than anything. Do whatever you have to to keep them safe!

SirVixofVixHall · 10/03/2020 22:26

Plenty of teachers at school in their forties and fifties, We need to think of the risk to them too.

WwwashYourHands · 10/03/2020 22:34

Very bizarre and hard to understand, when on another thread on this board we see that authorities are going crazy if someone turns up to hospital with "flu like symptoms" ie they aren't even confirmed as having COVid-19!

mindproject · 10/03/2020 22:37

A day ago I was like most of the people on this thread, very worried, starting to panic a bit, washing my hands a lot and I signed the petition to get the schools closed.

But, since then I've watched a lot of stuff on YouTube that talks about the virus being propaganda and some of it is starting to make sense. There are lot of inconvenient truths and facts that don't quite add up. I don't know who to believe or who to trust. I've decided to keep an open and mind and not worry too much for now. It's a nice relief.

Evilspiritgin · 10/03/2020 22:39

I’d be a lot more pissed off at the fucking teacher who went to Italy at half term then went back to school, even if the guidelines were saying at the time he’d be alright he should’ve self contained for 2 weeks

Facingtheunkown · 10/03/2020 22:40

how on earth can this be propaganda, from where?

its affecting everyone?

is it gods propagnda..

“Proactive school closures—closing schools before there’s a case there—have been shown to be one of the most powerful nonpharmaceutical interventions that we can deploy.”
www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/does-closing-schools-slow-spread-novel-coronavirus

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 22:42

Sorry I don’t think Italy is just doing it for propaganda that’s a bit insulting.

168 dead in one day take a look or a google.

mindproject · 10/03/2020 22:46

People make propaganda, not God. I don't believe in God anyway.

I don't know if it is propaganda, part propaganda or we are being told the whole truth. We are usually not told the whole truth, so it is most likely part propaganda. Anyway, it has helped me to calm down, which I needed to do. I think people need to do a bit more independent research than just the mainstream media.

mindproject · 10/03/2020 22:47

It is healthy to question the narrative. I am trying to keep a level head.
