DCs school has coronavirus and they’re not shutting the school!?

My DCs school has had a confirmed case of coronavirus. One of their teachers who has been in school and has taught both DC this week!!!
School isn’t shutting! The DCs have been given information about the virus and symptoms to look out for.
This is really scaring me! Any of those DCs and other teachers could have it. Any of them could have gone home and passed it onto parents/grandparents/people who go to the same clubs in the community! I know it doesn’t really affect children as much as adults but doesn’t mean they can’t be carriers. We’re not exactly talking young children either. Both my DCs are teenagers.

Debating keeping the DC off school for the next 2 weeks? Am I overreacting!?

Well take it into your hands. Tweet, complain, create a storm.

No don't send your DC to school.

That is unacceptable.
Children will carry the symptoms to the more vulnerable

SapphireSalute · 10/03/2020 19:41

Unfortunately it seems to be all about the money.... uk businesses will suffer financially if schools close. Parents won’t be able to work etc etc

My workplace would suffer as we have quite a few mums juggling school/kids

The government don’t want to upset businesses

Facingtheunkown · 10/03/2020 19:41

Op I can't link on my phone.
There's already a petition.

It's on the links on the worried about covid threads, it's called petition agaisnt covid.

Stroller15 · 10/03/2020 19:41

This makes me so angry! I would keep my DC off too OP. I really don't understand what the government is hoping to achieve with this wait and see approach. It is either serious or it's not.

Purplewithred · 10/03/2020 19:42

NHS11 advice is very clear - if it's a confirmed case and the kids have been in close contact
Close contact with a confirmed case means:

  • living in the same house
  • face-to-face contact, for example, talking for more than a few minutes
  • being coughed on
  • being within 2 metres of the person for more than 15 minutes
  • contact with their body fluids

...then if you don't have symptoms you should self isolate. So if you think your children got that close they should be isolated, but if not there is no need.

Facingtheunkown · 10/03/2020 19:42

Bubbles that is what I would do too.

Kick up a storm etc. Tweet.

SapphireSalute · 10/03/2020 19:42

Wonder what school attendance officers will make of parents keeping kids off school

Can’t see them getting too far with fining parents for non attendance

I like to think I’m fairly relaxed about COVID-19 but I think even I would haul my kids out of that school

coconuttelegraph · 10/03/2020 19:47

Isolating children within a family for 2 weeks isn't going to be an easy thing to do for everyone, practically do you keep them in their bedrooms all that time, what about siblings, do you and your partner also isolate for the whole time, I can't imagine how it would work in practice.

I don't know why they don't do a deep clean but tbh I can see why they wouldn't necessarily jump to potentially 1000s of people having to isolate

Yellowbutterfly1 · 10/03/2020 19:48

I really don’t think this country is doing enough, but then again I think a lot of people generally aren’t bothered.

There has been so much talk about hand washing for 20 seconds yet whenever I’m in a public toilet I always seem to be the only person standing at the sink washing my hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. All the others still just do the quick 2 seconds under the tap.

My child’s school have told them they all need to wash their hands every hours but then say they can only use the toilets at break time.
She won’t use the toilet
She won’t use the school toilets anyway as according to her the taps and soap dispensers are old and rusty, so uses hand sanitizer instead which ideal.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 19:49

Yup same here not closing a college that has it. No one cares.

LuxLFC · 10/03/2020 19:51

This is crazy. How can they not even deep clean the school? There are so many mixed messages! One minute you can spread it even if you don't have symptoms & it can live on surfaces for a long time, the next none of that matters & you should carry on regardless? What the actual fuck is going on? Something about this stinks!

Asuitablecat · 10/03/2020 19:52

Ofsted judges schools on attendance. It comes under behaviour. Wonder if ofsted will waive that in light of cv.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 19:52

There is something very wrong indeed going on.

MrsMeg1 · 10/03/2020 19:53

I would be keeping mine off.

Can’t understand the reasoning behind the gov’s approach with the schools compared to other areas.

Children do get infected and although may get milder symptoms (not guaranteed though) DO Pass it on to other more vulnerable people.

Why are we doing the opposite to what other countries have done.

Perhaps that’s the reason cases in children are lower as China etc shut schools from the start.

adaline · 10/03/2020 19:54

It's shocking. Schools should close if they get cases.

Hdbeksnxbkxdnk · 10/03/2020 19:55

I hadn’t even thought about the practicalities of self-isolation. I’m still in panick mode debating what to do. I really don’t want to send them because of DC1 condition and all the advice from the government. But on the other hand there is “minimal risk”, school have put hand gel stands everywhere, being advised not to keep them off, children/teenagers being in a low risk group. I’m all for not going to school but there are a lot of good points about how they could be off for 2 weeks and still get it. I am so confused. There’s too much conflicting information out there. Why can’t we just make a decision as to whether we are going to take this virus seriously or not and just have some straight forward, non conflicting advice?
Other countries are making firm decisions, we aren’t at the minute.

neverdoingthatagain100 · 10/03/2020 19:57

I think you will be able to keep your child at home on health grounds, they are at risk.
Speak to your go if you can but there's no way mine would be going in if it definitely is a confirmed case.

Devlesko · 10/03/2020 19:57

Jersey

I pm'd you too. How many more do you need.
I know there's one to close schools but haven't seen one to allow us to take them out yet.
Most of my family have taken them out now, and say if they get a fine they'll just deregister.
You have to do the right thing, not the most popular.

noblegiraffe · 10/03/2020 19:57

Your DC1 is not low risk, they have an auto immune condition. Public Health England have risk assessed for the general population, not him. You, with your personal knowledge need to do your own risk assessment and see whether you feel comfortable with that.

Orangeblossom78 · 10/03/2020 19:58

It's not the school, it is the advice they have been given by Public Health England

Ours wrote to us last week to say the same- if there was a case they would not be closing (in bold) to tell us in advance.

somanydevices · 10/03/2020 19:59

But DC1 has an auto immune condition so that’s giving me the extra worry

Fuck going to school for a game of soldiers.

If my DC had an auto immune condition and a teacher had coronavirus I'd be keeping them off.

Tell them your DS is ill if you have to and keep them off at least a week. We'll all likely have a better handle of the situation in a week. You're not worrying overly, you're protecting your child.

justasking111 · 10/03/2020 20:01

Two schools in our area came back from ski trips. The teachers and children were sent home for two weeks. How quickly things have changed. Schools are babysitters so parents can work I think this is the rationale behind this change of mind.

Delatron · 10/03/2020 20:01

This will be the standard advice then. Even with cases they won’t shut or clean the schools..:
