Flying to America next week?

As the title says, I'm meant to be flying to America (Texas) next Monday. I'm fit and healthy so not worried even if I do catch coronavirus, however I'm mildly concerned about getting stranded there if flights start getting cancelled.

Would you go or not?

Should add I'm leaving from/returning to Heathrow.

As of yet, Texas hasn’t been hit hard. You’ll have to keep an eye on the airline route you’re taking, as airlines are significantly cutting back because of insufficient passengers.

Also, do you have good travel insurance?

HopeYouStepOnALego · 10/03/2020 15:46

I'm also off to US next week. I'm worried that the airline (low cost European airline) might go bust before the flight out. I know some of them are struggling just now. If the flight is ok I'm definitely still going.

Hi @brighterdays2, we've moved this to the Coronavirus topic area.

Plaidparty · 10/03/2020 16:08

I’m flying to Boston a week on Friday but getting more nervous...

brighterdays2 · 11/03/2020 20:46

Anyone else going on (or cancelling) a trip to the States?

OP posts:
brighterdays2 · 13/03/2020 18:25

Bump, anyone? Really not sure what to do now.

OP posts:
eggstrordinaire · 13/03/2020 18:37

Well it depends really. How essential is the trip? How long is it for? What are the consequences of being stranded for you? Work/relationships/financial?

brighterdays2 · 13/03/2020 22:28

Unless anything dramatic happens this weekend, I think I'm going to go.

We’ve cancelled our trip to NY. Virgin offered the opportunity to change our flights free of charge and all the shows we booked are now closed .

KitchenConfidential · 13/03/2020 22:34

I’ll be amazed if you’ll be able to by then.

FarTooSkinny · 13/03/2020 22:35

Trump already hinting at a travel ban from the UK. You'd probably have lots of space to stretch out in the seats at least

Mustbetimeforachange · 13/03/2020 22:35

Trump may stop you going anyway

brighterdays2 · 13/03/2020 22:38

I'm going to see family, not planning on going to any public events.

OP posts:
SixesandEights · 13/03/2020 22:39

You might get there, are you fussed about getting back?

Pigletpoglet · 13/03/2020 22:41

DH's work have just cancelled his trip - he should have been flying out Wednesday...

brighterdays2 · 13/03/2020 22:43

Trump wants to stop flights from the UK, but I was assuming I'd be able to get back? Or is that me being naive...

OP posts:
kerrybluesrockmyworld · 13/03/2020 22:44

Can you cope with getting stuck there?
Is your health insurance good enough to get all the treatment you need should you catch COVID-19 over there and become seriously unwell?

kerrybluesrockmyworld · 13/03/2020 22:45

Oh you're flying out next Monday; I reckon Trump will have stopped flights from the UK by then!

FarTooSkinny · 13/03/2020 22:45

Do you have family here? Are you prepared to not see them for months?

Honeyroar · 13/03/2020 22:52

I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if a heck of a lot of flights are cancelled over the next couple of weeks. As long as you’re prepared to have to stay a fair bit longer than you expected. (and that’s from someone who flies regularly and isn’t particularly bothered about the virus).
