To ask when you think all schools will shut

Due to the corona virus.

Have been talking to a relative and am more worried than I was. Have three dc, one of whom gets ill at the drop of a hat.

Facts emerging from Italy are not great, so why aren’t we in complete shut down now? What is the government waiting for?

To ask when you think all schools will shut

.

SamSeabornforPresident · 12/03/2020 12:03

I think they'll close 2 weeks before Easter. W/B 23rd. That seems to be the chat at the moment. (Scotland)

Whatsername177 · 12/03/2020 17:12

No school closures. That is a relief.

Devlesko · 12/03/2020 18:23

Whatsername
Do you not have parents or pil?
or is it childcare you need?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/03/2020 18:26

@Whatsername177 relief for me too. I've been worrying all day.

Sunshine1239 · 12/03/2020 18:34

Just watched the chief scientific advisors explanation and it makes perfect sense to me

Closing schools is not the right time

These people spend years studying models of pandemics

They know what they’re tking about

Whatsername177 · 12/03/2020 18:48

@Devlesko I am a teacher. It is a relief because I still have three weeks worth of curriculum left to teach My Yr11's before their GCSE exam. If we were off, the impact on their grades would be huge. I think we will shut, probably a week or two before Easter. But, right now I have a bit of breathing room to get a good stock of proper work in place to ensure they don't miss out. My dh is a children's author. I'm relieved he will still be able to do next weeks author visits to schools and not lose out financially - he is self employed so no work means no pay. We wouldn't need childcare as I would be at home if the school shut which makes me very fortunate. I do have parents. My dad has cancer (Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia - it is incurable). I'm very aware of how serious the risk to him is, I nearly lost him 18 months ago to pneumonia. I am staying away from him to reduce the risk.

NCTDN · 12/03/2020 21:25

Relief here too, although I don't like the thing where it says they expect it to peak in 10-14 weeks which would be right in exam season Sad

Devlesko · 12/03/2020 21:43

Whatsername

My dd is Y11, me and dh both have underlying health issues, and we are about to lose our income which it will take about 3 years to recover. We work in entertainment/music. Most of our work has been pulled, and we'll lose school workshops.
I know it's going to be tough for a lot of people. I still support closing schools and believe we should have done it sooner.
More people would have offered childcare help then too. Now we know there's thousands out there, who is going to offer, who is able?

I don’t think we should be closing schools. The pupils will then go to town centres and catch it that way. How are parents meant to manage childcare - send to grandparents??

Open air is better no crowded corridors of 1500 kids six times a day with minimal washing facilities.

Whatsername177 · 12/03/2020 22:18

People can self isolate if they are concerned, but keeping schools open for now is the right thing to do. Schools will close, but if they get the timing wrong it will push people to get together in other areas - not necessarily stay in isolation. I would be surprised if we dont close next week.

Bathroom12345 · 12/03/2020 22:25

I do agree that doing this too soon will mean if it needs to be done later people won’t do it. I heard two silly moos in Waitrose say in the queue that of course if they were self isolating then they would get them to do a Emergency Delivery!!

Why do people think that any demands that they have will be automatically done by others. Supermarket workers/drivers do not have magic immunity!

Redlocks28 · 12/03/2020 22:29

Do people think that the schools still will shut like many other countries-just not yet?

Or that they simply won’t close at all?

SleepingStandingUp · 13/03/2020 05:13

They said schools would need to be closed for 14-16 weeks for it to be worthwhile and they knew kids wouldn't stay in the house for that long ago I took that as there will be no closures we've

Ricekrispie22 · 13/03/2020 05:33

I think our schools will end up shutting. There are nearly half a million signatures on the Uk online petition to close schools

C3line · 13/03/2020 05:47

Why on earth should we take advice from hysterical signatures on a petition? Think I’d rather go with expert advice.

lilgreen · 13/03/2020 06:32

Of course, everyone that wants more action is hysterical and those that don’t are so level headed and superior.Hmm

Redlocks28 · 13/03/2020 07:24

Why is the ‘expert’ advice to so many other countries been to close but ours has been to open??

Sillyscrabblegames · 13/03/2020 08:07

Many of the signatures are by school children, this has been doing the rounds on social media and school groups

EvilPea · 13/03/2020 08:20

My feeling is our government is taking the view that it’s a virus, we need to be infected to further protect ourselves and the vulnerable.
A little bit like catching chicken pox as children.
So the country’s effectively closing still leave their citizens at risk of it starting up again when they lift the closing.

But that’s my take on it.

mummyofthreemunchkins · 13/03/2020 08:27

I work in a school and the general thought around staff is, at the moment they are safer in school. It keeps them contained with minimal interaction with the wider public. Once the schools shut they will be gathering and potentially mixing with far more people.

Cora1942 · 13/03/2020 08:27

All those saying swimming lessons are fine chlorine kills the virus. Really please think.
The parents waiting/watching are not in the water. The changing room will be a good place to catch it too. I despair at peoples denial. When it hits the UK it will be very bad. We dont have the critical care beds per population that Italy has. They have stopped admitting people over 60 to hospital according to some reports. We will probably have to set the bar lower. So to put it bluntly alot of people will die at home.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/03/2020 10:09

I’m a teacher, the general thought around staff is that no one is safer in school.

Kids are vectors, they carry germs and spread them everywhere. We have over 1500 students. They don’t wash hands, they spit, they pick their nose, bite their nails, sneeze on desks etc etc. Then they carry it out into the wider community, even though they don’t have symptoms
