Does this work as a hand gel? The 70% stuff.

Do I need to add anything to it?

Anyone??

Well, it's 70% alcohol so it will definitely work. It's your own personal choice if you want to add aloe Vera or something so it's less harsh on the skin. I have no idea what the ratios of this would need to be. I've just been using rubbing alcohol alone though.

Belindabelle · 09/03/2020 19:43

If you have the 70% version do not dilute it with anything as it needs to contain over 60% alcohol to work. I have some 99% and have diluted it with aloe Vera 25:75.

Bogoffrain · 09/03/2020 19:44

Thank you so much, I have managed to get 1ltr so that should help my family / friends

Do you mean medicinal spirit? Use plain but remember to moisturise your skin, it is unbelievably drying. Also, it stings if you have any cuts or grazes on the skin.
I always keep some in a small spray bottle to disinfect phones, remote controls, keyboards etc - I thought everyone uses it around the house.

picklemewalnuts · 09/03/2020 19:46

What Belinda said!

You can dilute the 100% stuff with glycerine, aloe gel or water. 2 parts alcohol to 1 part whatever else, it will still be 66% alcohol.

If you add anything much to the 70% stuff, it will be less than 60%.

rippingburrito · 09/03/2020 19:48

Apologies - of course this would just dilute it. I just use it alone and moisturise a bit after.

It's a maths connundrum that my brain can't work out.
What ratio of aloe gel can be added to the 70% stuff to give you a 60% alcohol strength?
Please show your working out in the margin🤔🤔🤔!

Echobelly · 09/03/2020 20:39

@Belindabelle - how did thayt work for you? I have tried doing the same (2pts aloe to 1pt 90% rubbing alcohol) and I've just got some really liquid stuff with blobs of gel, it hasn't coalesced at all and I mixed it for ages.

picklemewalnuts · 09/03/2020 20:48

Have you tried shaking it in a bottle? That worked for me, but I was adding alcohol to an older gel.

Echobelly · 09/03/2020 21:12

Tried a little, but should try it a bit more.

Belindabelle · 09/03/2020 21:46

Funnily enough one batch mixed really well whilst the other did go a bit blobby but I just gave it a shake before using. It is very watery though so I have put some into little spray bottles which works well.

I have emphasised to DH and the boys that this is not a substitute for washing with soap and water only to be used when out and about.

boomfloom · 09/03/2020 22:24

Echobelly if you add two parts aloe to one part 90% rubbing alcohol then wouldn't the hand rub end up being just 30% alcohol?

Belindabelle · 09/03/2020 22:54

Yes you need 2 parts alcohol to 1 part aloe or glycerin.

turnedabout · 09/03/2020 23:00

Where can I buy rubbing alcohol?

middleager · 09/03/2020 23:05

I think you can add essential oil to the Aloe/alcohol mix, but I need to find a 'recipe'.

I picked up some surgical spirit (sorry, not sure if that is the same thing? from Lloyds Chemist).

Ginfordinner · 09/03/2020 23:10

I thought everyone uses it around the house.

No. I have never used anything like it in my house. I walk or drive everywhere and am lucky to be able to wash my hands frequently, so we just don't use hand gels.

Nine parts alcohol to one-tenth aloe. This will be a 63% alcohol mixture.
