AIBU to report lack of self isolation to school?

A family with 2 DDs in my DDs school returned from a short holiday Venice on Saturday. I have seen photos of them enjoying themselves in Venice on their social media accounts so know that they definitely went.

They have sent their DDs into school today rather than self isolate against the latest advice from the government. The parents' attitude is that we'll all be exposed at some point so there's no point self isolating!

Would I be unreasonable to phone the school and let them know or should I keep quiet? One of the DDs is in the same class as my eldest DDs.

Are you sure about the timing? Did they go in half term?

cologne4711 · 10/03/2020 07:39

Oh just saw the update. Why were they on holiday in term time (misses the point of the thread).

Glad the school took action, the rules aren't complicated.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 08:10

So, did the government put their faith in scientists when told that their politically driven austerity measures were driving people to their grave or did they carry on regardless?

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 08:13

Wong thread, sorry Blush

This is outrageous. I understand why you are feeling concerned. As someone that works in education, I absolutely would be informing the school! If the parents are going to be so reckless then it is on us to hold them accountable. Lots of other students are likely to have asthma/be immunocompromised & you never know if their parents are long term-ill, going through chemo etc or if staff are pregnant. I absolutely would report & feel zero remorse for it. Good on you for raising it! As for the person that said ‘snitching’ grow up! If people cannot be responsible then yes they should be held to account for putting others at risk.

If they are self employed then contact the local paper with their names and business names and let them know they aren’t self-isolating. The business will dry up then

Stupid as these parents are, this would be a terrible idea.

Do you have any idea how stressful it is to be self employed right now with clients cancelling/postponing jobs 'just in case' and yet still having salaries/bills to pay?

I don’t think it’s stupidity though. It’s a certain level of arrogance and self importance that drives this kind of thinking ..”We don’t have to do what the authorities say, we are far more intelligent”, and ”if we’ve caught it why the hell should we be the only ones?”

Do you have any idea how stressful it is to be self employed right now with clients cancelling/postponing jobs 'just in case' and yet still having salaries/bills to pay?

Isn’t that going to happen to all the people they infect in the course of their business?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 09:01

"My DD has impaired immunity. I am desperately hoping schools are closed soon,"

The government should allow parents to keep their DC home if they choose,
without fines or losing school place

Some DC are very vulnerable, whereas others can continue to attend

Then don't go on foreign holidays atm
Cancel if already booked - that money is gone anyway, whether you go or stay

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 09:06

People who are supposed to self-isolate should bloody well do so

So that the whole country doesn't have to go into lockdown later on
That would be an economic catastrophe

BackInTime · 10/03/2020 09:15

Unfortunately there are many people like this who are not willing to take this thing seriously and have no regard for the health of others. I have no hope that this virus will be contained here and we will soon follow Italy.

BackInTime · 10/03/2020 09:18

@BigChocFrenzy I agree, see my thread re travel over Easter holidays most people are fully intent on going ahead with travel plans.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/03/2020 09:31

From what the school said, everyone in those kids classes, including teachers etc should now be self isolating?

Triceratops3 · 10/03/2020 11:35

@Whatsnewpussyhat The school isolated the pupils who had just returned from Venice before they had contact with the other pupils so I can't see a need to isolate other pupils. We've had another email this morning confirming this today, and that the medical room received a deep clean last night so is back in use today.

I hadn't realised that the girls were met outside the school gates because one of the staff knows the family and had tipped the school off about their holiday destination. They were escorted into the school through the staff entrance and waited in the medical room (without supervision so no need to worry about a member of staff in close contact) until the parents were contacted. They left by the same route when all pupils were in lessons so wouldn't bump into anyone.

Ironically, the rumour is that the family had reported their DDs absent because of illness last week because they've been previously warned about taking their DDs out of school for holidays. Guess that's backfired on them!

I am happy with the way the school dealt with the situation and confident sending my DDs into school today.

Sorry, I thought they had been in school all day yesterday and sent home this morning.

SnoozyLou · 10/03/2020 15:12

Tell the school.

SnoozyLou · 10/03/2020 15:15

The family have chosen not to self isolate because the parents are bloody selfish. If they couldn't afford to self isolate afterwards, they shouldn't have gone.

GabsAlot · 10/03/2020 15:33

Claire youre friend wont be going anywhere the whole of italy is onl lockdown now and if they do send her back she'll be quarantined

I know Advanced Searching is poor form but I did an AS and he's posted 'snitch' related comments on seven different threads. But I'm worried now because does this make ME a snitch?

FromDespairToHere · 10/03/2020 20:24

Definitely a snitch, not sure on the moistness of your snitching Grin
