AIBU to report lack of self isolation to school?

A family with 2 DDs in my DDs school returned from a short holiday Venice on Saturday. I have seen photos of them enjoying themselves in Venice on their social media accounts so know that they definitely went.

They have sent their DDs into school today rather than self isolate against the latest advice from the government. The parents' attitude is that we'll all be exposed at some point so there's no point self isolating!

Would I be unreasonable to phone the school and let them know or should I keep quiet? One of the DDs is in the same class as my eldest DDs.

This is how it spreads!

Devlesko · 09/03/2020 18:33

Having zero symptoms is spreading the virus, not just going abroad.
Once you are showing symptoms and told to self isolate you've already spread it to however many people.

LolaSmiles · 09/03/2020 18:38

Having zero symptoms is spreading the virus, not just going abroad
Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Based on that logic there are only two courses of action:

 1. Everyone self isolates because they have no symptoms and no symptoms spreads it
 2. Everyone goes about life as usual whilst ignoring the fact that some people have been to areas with known infections have a high risk of being exposed to it.

Alternatively, people can listen to the public health advice and self isolate if they've been to a high risk area to minimise the spread (note minimise, not totally prevent), and everyone else takes some additional hygiene precautions.

Dry snitching is disingenuous
Snitching is straightforward

 1. Miss, can you hand out the science homework again that was due yesterday, John says he dropped it on the way in to school.
 1. Miss, John hasn't done his homework, thought you should know.
Devlesko · 09/03/2020 20:51

Lola

I knew you'd get there in the end.
Yes, complete shutdown would have resulted in fewer infected and fewer deaths.
No shutdown, worst case scenario.

Only a numpty would believe that self isolating when you show signs will mean you haven't already infected anyone.

LolaSmiles · 09/03/2020 21:41

Only a numpty would believe that self isolating when you show signs will mean you haven't already infected anyone.
But the advice isn't self isolate if you have symptoms.

Most people can continue to go to work, school and other public places.

The NHS page says:
You only need to stay away from public places (self-isolate) if advised to by the 111 online coronavirus service or a medical professional.

And then it says use the service if:

you think you might have coronavirus
in the last 14 days you've been to a country or area with a high risk of coronavirus – see our coronavirus advice for travellers
you've been in close contact with someone with coronavirus

On self isolating:
If you have been told to self-isolate, you need to stay indoors and avoid contact with other people for 14 days.

It is important to follow the advice for the whole period, even if you do not have any symptoms

At the end of the day a total shutdown doesn't work. Does everyone self isolate? What about the healthcare staff? Where do their children go? What about the people who aren't HCPs but are needed for the hospitals to run? How do the hospital staff get to the hospital if there's no public transport because everyone is self isolating? If they're in their own vehicles then how do they get petrol for their vehicles given that the tanker drivers won't be driving due to self isolating? What food will people be getting from the shops that can't open?
Just curious.

Sounds like the school handled it well & personally I think the parents are selfish cunts.

I’m carrying on sending DS1 to school in GCSE year, despite the fact he has a long term lung disease, having (clearly misplaced) faith that arseholes like that won’t be sending their ‘probably be alright regardless’ kids in when they could be incubating it & accidentally kill their peers because hey ‘we’re all going to get it anyway’.

Fuck me I’d be being a lot less charitable than most of the pp’s and as for ‘dry snitching’ less fucks could not be given if that’s what it takes, I’d be dry snitching all over them (literally no idea what it means but I reckon even more unpleasant than an uninvited dry hump, which is all that makes me think of!).

Of course we’ll all bloody get it with that much stupidity and selfishness abounding...

GabsAlot · 09/03/2020 22:30

good on the school selfish twunts

the whole of italy has jsut gone on lockdown

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 22:34

It's the '' dry '' snitch that's flummoxed me.

Op please please tell the school. It could be my dc school, my little girl skipping in like an innocent lamb to venetian selfish bastards slaughter. It's not fair.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/03/2020 22:36

If they are self employed then contact the local paper with their names and business names and let them know they aren’t self-isolating. The business will dry up then

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 22:36

Oops, just seen update. Good on that school

Daisier · 09/03/2020 22:44

I would be beyond furious if one of my DC had somehow seen one of these children at school and had to miss two weeks now. Especially if they are in exam years.

People's selfishness never ceases to amaze me.

clairethewitch70 · 09/03/2020 22:49

This will be a common feature after Easter break as so many families going abroad, and more areas become lockdown or travel restrictions and selfish people won't self isolate. A friend of mine went to Rome yesterday and said she won't self isolate when she gets back due to being busy? That was yesterday

Oxo01 · 10/03/2020 00:59

Tell the school, my family member when well looks and acts as healthy normal child, however she has serious long term health condition she is 11 years old, any slight cold / viral infection going around puts her life at great risk year round, has numerous hospital admissions, pneumonia and other serious organ problems etc , she has blood transfusions / exchange 4-8 weekly, she had 36 hospital admission one year. Last year her spleen was removed.
She also has a ECHP due to the amount of time she misses school.
Last week she got a bit of a cold etc school said to send her in !!! no way she went to school, since then there has been 2 people in the same borough that have Corona virus, school advised that daughter could be taken to court as no one n school has it and jour country had low level so just need to take nomal precautions , she has been on antibiotics now as a precaution but she will not be going to school when people like this are ignorant and selfish.

We have emailed all professionals involved and said she will not be in school this week and probably longer now, we have requested they provide schoolwork for her to do at home, they have not replied yet, but daughter was told that although school understands and are sympathetic daughter could face being taken to court as currently the school will not be closing and they have to go by WHO advise.

Sorry for ranting but it's so frustrating when people know they could be infected and just suit themselves not giving a thought to anyone that may be high risk .

CuppaZa · 10/03/2020 01:10

Definitely tell the school. Selfish, ignorant parents.
Ignore the stupid response from the first poster

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/03/2020 01:20

Nobody is that stupid. I reckon that Gindaddy's DCs have been pranking him, changing his text shortcut from "yes, yanbu, I concur" (or other similar common sense, non-goady response) to: "snitches get stitches".

Like attached pic.

Either that or he's really Phil Mitchell.

AIBU to report lack of self isolation to school?
0DimSumMum0 · 10/03/2020 01:31

This is why self isolating won't work as most people won't follow through with it which is so inconsiderate.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2020 07:09

Definitely tell the school. Selfish, ignorant parents. Ignore the stupid response from the first poster

You've read the whole thread, right...?

Bringringbring12 · 10/03/2020 07:12

* Reporting to the school feels a bit like dry snitching though? *

Are you 6 years old?

A brief factual email to the school and leave at that

Bringringbring12 · 10/03/2020 07:13

Brilliant response from school

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 07:17

Tell the school. I hope everyone else does who notices the same on social media.

Remember there will be parents and grandparents suffering or recovering from cancer in your community and they are being put at huge risk.

Do the right thing.

Nononoandno · 10/03/2020 07:20

Purple white
Read page 5.... the school now know!!!

MintySpud · 10/03/2020 07:24

I think GinDaddy is looking for attention with the infantile "dry snitching" thing. He has come out with it on various threads and always the same response ensues.

Yawn.

ThanosSavedMe · 10/03/2020 07:24

I’m not surprised by the family. I think they’ll be many many more.

I know a family who were due to go on holiday (flying) There was a chicken pox outbreak at the school and one of the kids came out in spots the day before they were due to go. They still went, and even made jokes that luckily there were no spots on the face so they could get away with it.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 10/03/2020 07:34

I'm glad the school took action on that. My DCs schools have a few immunocompromised DC, including at least one who is having chemo right now and it's worrying enough for the parents when schools encourage DC with illnesses to come back quickly as long as they don't have a temperature.
