Possible news next week
belay · 08/03/2020 17:17
Anyone else having a feeling that there will be a major announcement from government next week?
Nolite77 · 08/03/2020 17:23
I think its likely we will all begin to feel the effects of new emergency measures in the next few weeks due to the virus, perhaps not a full lock down but I think daily life will change a lot for a few months.
Strictly1972 · 08/03/2020 17:25
I hope so. It might help me decide what to do about holidays! I think it’s time the government try to take some kind of measures now really. I think we are resigned to the fact it’s going to have an impact and we just need to get sensible and minimise it and keep as many people safe & healthy as possible.

Based on what?

I think we'll have a shut down, the week after next, perhaps when we hit the 2000 mark.
I'm sure they'll announce closing borders to tourism , it's not necessary travel. Either this or once you get there the country will quarantine you anyway.
It's madness to carry on travelling.
Strictly1972 · 08/03/2020 17:48
@Devlesko my hubby & I were literally just having this conversation at dinner. I wouldn’t be surprised at all. It makes sense really.
BritWifeinUSA · 08/03/2020 17:48
Why would there be a shutdown? I live in a state of 7.5 million people and in this state we have had 16 deaths already from Coronavirus. So, one-ninth of the UK population and 8 times as many deaths. Are we shut down? Nope. No need.
nagynolonger · 08/03/2020 17:58
They won't shut schools yet. Maybe a few in selected areas but not nationwide. They will close sporting events and concerts, and maybe cinemas and theatres first.
Aria20 · 08/03/2020 17:58
Yep I agree various gov meetings tomo so I think at the least large gatherings eg sport events and music concerts will be postponed or behind closed doors like other countries. Non urgent operations postponed to free up space in hospitals. I think they are trying to get closer to the Easter holidays before closing schools to minimise disruption but we'll see. Perhaps some travel restrictions and more working from home.
Tootletum · 08/03/2020 18:06
Well I suppose since at least six people have died on the roads this week, they'll be closing them all, no?
Davincitoad · 08/03/2020 18:19
I really hope so because this needs to be addressed now.
copperstrike76 · 08/03/2020 20:23
I hope there's an announcement and that some measures are taken as it doesn't really feel as though anything is happening. Meanwhile we just watch the numbers going up. They said at the start of the week we were in the "delay" phase but nothing really changed and apparently we are actually in the "containment" phase still? I appreciate there are probably lots of folk working hard behind the scenes but I don't get the sense that much is being done or that the government is very decisive about this.
Hairyfairy01 · 08/03/2020 20:33
I think they will decide to enter the delay stage in the next few days which will effect sporting events, encourage working from home, close schools etc. I don't think this will be Boris making the decision though, let's face it he doesn't give a shit about my family and I, I think the WHO will force it on him.
Notonmyshift · 08/03/2020 20:36
Maybe the announcement will be for people to stop panic buying and to get a grip!
Gadgnkk · 08/03/2020 20:36
I'm not sure why several posters have wondered what the announcement will be about. FGS - it's in the coronavirus topic, do you perhaps think the OP is referring to corovavirus?
Drastic measures need to be taken now. It'd be idiotic not to and I hope a lot of stuff gets shut down to control the spread of this virus.
Namethecat · 08/03/2020 20:43
My mil travels on a coach and stays in a hotel (her choice ) once a year to visit us . It's about 300 miles and she's 84 . Tbh it's something we could be without at the moment . She is of the sort that would heed no advice so what we will do with her - who knows. I wish they would restrict or at least the coach/holiday company would decided taking coaches of older people on organised coach holidays is a bad thing.

The government are going to have to do things people don’t like, for many it will be a shock, hopefully people will realise what a free country Britain actually was. It will concentrate minds and make people take this threat seriously.
Hellodotdotdot · 08/03/2020 20:48
I think they'll tell us Bojo has it and that's when they start shutting down public areas where you might come in to close contact with people. He will survive of course, with top of the range medical care.
