School closure solution ?

Some interesting thoughts in this Twitter thread on how to manage school closures while still providing childcare/schooling for frontline workers & those with no childcare alternatives. Close 75% to break transmission chains & keep 25% open with v high infection control measures so teachers & parents can have peace of mind.
I think we do now need to move beyond the panic about financial & economic shock of school closures - which are inevitable - and start to find workable solutions. There is no perfect answer, all options are going to cause disruption & hardship, but it’s time to start finding solutions to get us through this shit storm. Thoughts?

In this age of tech. Schools should be able to send some work home by email app etc. Particularly senior schools that have moved over to this system anyway for homework.

I predict schools will close a week early for Easter and we will be shutdown till Easter hols end. Two weeks ago Italy only had 150/200 cases. Now they have shutdown.

It’s not really about the educational side though is it? More the fact that if the kids are off then they will need someone to look after them causing a loss of income and a loss of workers. I say this as a mum of a dd taking her GCSEs thus year. Also it may get to the point where school staff are ill so unable to work which will cause a different type of issue. I’m assuming adult to child ratios will become more flexible and school may become more of a child care facility until things improve?

I don’t want to become a child care facility as a teacher. I would like to not get sick. We could literally set all work online it needed. If kids choose not to do it we can’t control that.

I work in a school too. What I meant was if there are staff off sick and the kids are still fine surely if you end up with a class of 40+ Mixed aged kids you wouldn’t be able to teach to the standard you would with an normal sized class. It would then just become crowd management and keeping them occupied more than structured lessons

In the current circumstances, I'm in favour of ppl taking their child out of school (if they wish to) without penalty. If there is a petition for this, please provide the link.

I know its only a partial solution, plz don't berate me for this.

ritatherockfairy · 08/03/2020 15:46

wobblywindows. I totally agree. Would definitely sign any petition that's going.

whatsleep · 08/03/2020 15:49

wobblywindows a very good point, there will be parents worried about being fined for keeping their kids off at the minute.
