With the virus here, are you washing your hands more?

YABU - No
YANBU - Yes

About the same here. DS has eczema and is prone to skin infections, plus allergies so I have to be super alert for cross contamination risks.

DD has SEN and is picky about cleanliness and hygiene - I've been called into the school before to discuss her excessive handwashing. She was told at school then that it wasn't necessary to wash her hands unless she'd used the toilet, before eating or she could see dirt on her hands. I agreed somewhat at the time that it was excessive, as she likes to wash her hands between food items if there is any residue, and if she is painting for example and gets any on her hands she has to clean them before she can carry on. The rules have now changed of course, with handwashing for sneezes and coughs and at frequent intervals, and she's very confused.

She's been mentioning germs constantly for the last week, and she's very stressed out about it all. They've clearly had a lesson on hygiene, and I'm pleased the school are being vigilant, but I have a terrified 5 year old. I can't risk having the tv or radio on in case she has a meltdown. It's like living with a mini Lady Macbeth.

ClientQueen · 08/03/2020 23:05

Slightly. I never used to wash my hands straight away after getting in from work or the shops etc but I do now

ByeMF · 08/03/2020 23:09

After working with the public I started washing my hands every time I passed a sink because it is stunning how dirty some people are. I always wash my hands when I come back into the house.

Amortentia · 08/03/2020 23:10

No, I'm very careful about washing my hands. I spent many years living with student nurses, so know how to do it properly.

I'm a bit disturbed my the number of people I know talking about this and how you should wash your hands properly, wtf were they doing before??

caringcarer · 08/03/2020 23:14

My dh is in cc in hospital so I am washing hands so often it feels like i have ocd.

Sunshineand · 08/03/2020 23:17

I always was a person who washed their hands all the time. Taught my babies too, and I remember FIL mocking DS, asking if he was planning on becoming a surgeon when he grew up because he washed his hands so thoroughly. Over the years I've been peer pressured into washing my hands less. We are also a shoes off by the front door house. We are never ill. Nobody has any time off work or school with infections diseases.
Covid 19 has made me realise I was right and that I shouldn't give in to peer pressure. I'll wash my hands as much as I like, thanks.

Devlesko · 08/03/2020 23:25

Maybe a little more, but I'm a big hand washer anyway.
Bit stupid to rely on kids to though, they're spreaders of germs.

ALongHardWinter · 08/03/2020 23:53

I don't think I could actually wash my hands much more than I do already tbh. I wash them as soon as I get indoors, before preparing or eating food, after anything cat related,e.g. changing litter tray, dealing with cat food, after using the toilet......I'm a bit of a germ phobe and I often end up with sore hands from washing them so much.

chardonayforme · 08/03/2020 23:57

..

PickAChew · 08/03/2020 23:59

No but I'm a bit of a compulsive handeasher, anyhow, and my skin is already cracking.

ALongHardWinter · 09/03/2020 00:03

While we're on the subject,I must say that over the past few years,I have been astonished at some people's attitude to hand washing. I can remember my daughter's Dh coming in from work and going straight to the fridge. She called out to him 'Don't you think you should wash your hands first?'. He said 'I washed them before I left work'. Which had been 40 minutes previously, and en route, would have entailed opening and closing several doors (which were no doubt swarming with bacteria due to his work colleagues' habit of never washing their hands) touching his car door, steering wheel etc, then touching his shoes when he took them off. I imagine that he thought we'd think he'd come home, holding his hands in the air and not touching anything!

cricketmum84 · 09/03/2020 00:09

A little more yes. Would always wash after bathroom, before preparing food, normal times. But I now insist that everyone washed their hands as soon as they enter the house after work, school, shopping etc. Also Washing for longer and more thoroughly.

HonestlyItsFine · 09/03/2020 00:34

I was an overenthusiastic hand washer anyway. Now I've made them sore because it's constant after touching any surface. (if near a sink). I'm starting to wonder if I'm developing an issue, to be honest, but I suppose better more than less

CuppaZa · 09/03/2020 00:47

Yes. I did wash them regularly before, but being more conscientious now.
The amount of women I used to see coming out of a public loo cubical and just walk out without washing (before a this panic), I really do believe the majority of the population are filthy bastards.

Apirateslifeforme · 09/03/2020 00:56

I did it fairly regularly anyway, between the dog, the kid, allergies, OCD and prepping the families meals I was always washing a fair amount,
But I have cracked my hands open the past few weeks. I've got a tub of intense moisturiser on the bedside table. I've started to put on just before going to sleep and again when I wake, trying to moisturise each time I wash the hands

Isla727 · 09/03/2020 01:16

I'm glad that most people are washing their hands more often.

I have real obsessive compulsive disorder; with one of my sub-types/themes being contamination-focused intrusive thoughts and compulsions so I wash my hands way more than average. My family all wash their hands when they get inside from doing anything; as well as the usual times. I always use sanitiser but have had to switch from a non-alcohol benzalkonium chloride based one, which mostly works for D&V bugs to an alcohol gel for the Coronavirus outbreak.

The most important time to wash your hands during the Coronavirus outbreak is when you get inside from shops/work/town.

Isla727 · 09/03/2020 01:18

I also second the applying moisturiser before bed because it's the one time that you don't need to be washing your hands.

Worriedmom2020 · 09/03/2020 01:21

Yup, I have contact dermatitis from it Sad

Onthemerrygoroundagain · 09/03/2020 02:26

I always washed my hands. Definitely washing them more now though.

WanderingTrolley1 · 09/03/2020 05:23

No.

Ponoka7 · 09/03/2020 05:43

The body shop Hemp hand cream is brilliant. It's £12, but usually on offer. At the moment it's buy one, get one half price. So £9 each.

I'm washing mine a bit more and not touching rails etc as much. I'm also sitting upstairs on the bus, where it's emptier and the windows are already open.

Wer2Next · 09/03/2020 06:04

Yes. And using hand sanitiser more, we touch so many things that could possibly be contaminated.

Aridane · 09/03/2020 06:13

Yes, handling more frequently. only problem is , and I’m not sure what to do, is that my eczema flares up and my skin is splitting, rendering me potentially vulnerable to infections. What do others do in this situation?

Aridane · 09/03/2020 06:14

(handling, not handling)

Whentheleavesfalldown · 09/03/2020 06:14

No, I'm a nurse so wash my hands very regularly anyway.

But what I have been doing is cleaning thing's i wouldn't normally e.g. my phone, pens for work, watch etc
