With the virus here, are you washing your hands more?

YABU - No
YANBU - Yes

No so I’m a a bit of a clean freak and wash my hands a lot already. To the point they get sore and I end up with cracked skin!

However I am more conscious about opening doors etc that others have touched.

EnidBlyton · 08/03/2020 10:33

god yes!
my hands are sore from all the washing.
when i get to work, and sometimes i clean the light switches at work and i have just been reminded to clean the kettle handle.
and the photocopier is making me nervous.

EnidBlyton · 08/03/2020 10:34

i try and use my sleeve to open doors

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky · 08/03/2020 10:36

Not more often, but I am being more careful about washing them thoroughly every time.

Mrsjayy · 08/03/2020 10:38

You all need Okeefes working hands, hand cream its fab and no dried out hands .

MakeItRain · 08/03/2020 10:43

I was talking to a nurse who said proper hand washing is a really effective way to stop it spreading as it just washes the virus off you. Hand sanitisers are not so effective unless they're really strong in alcohol content.
So I'm washing my hands more and trying to avoid touching my face. But that said I think it's inevitable the virus will rapidly spread and worrying won't change that. We just have to do what we can and get on with our lives.

Minesril · 08/03/2020 10:44

37 weeks pregnant...more loo breaks needed...and being a bit more vigorous with the washing! My hands are very dry.

I think school is coming down hard on it too - DS is doing it without being asked! He's getting quite inventive with the 'happy birthday' lyrics too.

SureTry · 08/03/2020 10:45

No, I've always washed my hands regularly. I have a toddler who goes to playgroups so we always hand wash after attending these. I also have 2 older children and 2 cats so all that's changed is the length of time I wash them for. The only thing I would change should we be unfortunate to catch it would be to stop using hand towels and move to paper hand towels at home.

trinity0097 · 08/03/2020 10:46

I’m washing after every lesson I teach now. I would have just washed hands after the loo.

Playdoughbum · 08/03/2020 10:51

Normally quite good, but extra ones- getting into work, getting home from work, lots during the day - every time the kids do theirs at school plus if I touch a school handle/handrail ugh.
Using lots of handcream Smile

Nquartz · 08/03/2020 10:52

I am washing more frequently, DH always washed his when he comes into the house & DD & I do now too. We're generally a well/healthy/never ill household so we must be doing something right but it can't hurt to be moe careful.

Luckily I'm a regular hand cream user already so my hands aren't drier than usual.

Nquartz · 08/03/2020 10:53

We all (when possible) cover our hands opening doors in public but always have done that!

chocolicious · 08/03/2020 10:54

No. Having worked directly with patients in the NHS for over 30 years I am used to washing my hands dozens of times a day.Even when I'm at home I regularly wash my hands. Apart from the obvious hand washing before and after food prep and after using the toilet I always wash my hands as soon as I get into the house if I've been out and before I put away any food shopping. I have a mini hand sanitizer in my handbag and for years have always carried one when I've been out the house when hand washing isn't an option.

WTFdidwedo · 08/03/2020 10:56

I work in a restaurant so have to wash my hands constantly as a food handler. I'm slightly baffled that people only just seem to know the correct way to wash their hands in fact!

ColaFreezePop · 08/03/2020 10:56

No, I more susceptible to bacterial infections and was told years ago when it was worked out to take hygiene measures including good hand hygiene.

Incidentally I was told not to use antibacterial soap but normal soap to wash my hands. Antibacterial soaps dry out your hands more and often contain harmful ingredients.

woodencoffeetable · 08/03/2020 10:58

no - because I was washing very regularly before.
I take a bit more time with it though.

alltoomuchrightnow · 08/03/2020 11:00

No as I can't. I work for a huge well known retailer and there are no staff sinks on my floor. Not allowed to use customer loos. It's annoying as can't wash hands before or after using staff canteen either. Staff loos are quite some distance away and we are not allowed to leave our posts. (toilet is also an issue...don't get me started...we just have to wait till have a break

onlinelinda · 08/03/2020 22:29

A bit more. I have a long term condition so always did reasonably well with hand washing.

Sparklesocks · 08/03/2020 22:36

I wouldn’t say the frequency has increased as I was quite vigilant anyway, but I think I’m taking a bit longer and am more aware about definitely more aware I’m hitting each area rather then absent mindedly thinking about other things.

DoctorNicoleWatterson · 08/03/2020 22:41

Yes, obviously always washed them after loo, before cooking, eating or if they were dirty for any reason, but I've now started washing whenever I get home now too.

I also work in a school where I am washing them non stop anyway, I work in reception which can be pretty grubby at the best of times!

My skin is not appreciating it at all, really dry and cracked now even with using hand cream after washing. We're also implementing set hand washing times with the children which has not been great for those with eczema. Hopefully it will help stop the spread of germs.

BeardedMum · 08/03/2020 22:45

I always washed my hands a lot.

LaPampa · 08/03/2020 22:47

No - because I already wash my hands before I eat, prepare food, after I use the loo, get to work, get home and so on.

Years ago when I was in my first job and using the tube to get to work someone told me that if everyone just washed their hands when they got to the office then sick leave would reduce massively. So I immediately started washing hands when arriving anywhere. Worked very well until I had kids and get colds from them, but they have also been taught good hand washing.

We do buy our soap on 5L bottles. Very handy that is too at the mo!

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/03/2020 22:47

No, since I've always washed them properly.

dontgobaconmyheart · 08/03/2020 22:53

Yes - though mainly the difference is that I am washing for twice as long and paying more mind to it I suppose. Always wash them quite a bit regardless, anytime im in the bathroom, pre/during food prep, after loading the dishwasher and so on. It's always been the first thing i do when I get home, even if I jump straight in the shower.

What I am doing more of by some margin is cleaning my mobile phone screen nd laptop keyboard routinely.

Timetospare · 08/03/2020 22:55

I’ve always loved washing my hands.
I grew up on a farm and as soon as we came indoors we were made to wash our hands, likewise before every meal and obviously after the toilet.
I find it quite mindful, a full minute or so washing, soaping, rinsing and drying.
