To ignore my symptoms?

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 12:58

I think I have a mild cold. Runny nose, headache, slight sore throat. Have been at work and done housework this morning, so hardly suffering badly.
But every so often I keep convincing myself I have the coronavirus. So earlier when reading about it I started coughing a bit. Last night I convinced myself I have a fever. I think it was just a bit hot in the living room.
So AIBU to ignore my symptoms and carry on as normal in the knowledge I am probably just being a bit hysterical?

@Stormyjupiter This whole post is about acknowledging that I am being a bit hysterical. If I was convinced I would ring 111, not post on MN.

@alloutoffucks I agree with you that you’re being hysterical! Youre describing common garden cold virus symptoms. Nonetheless the common cold is categorised as part of the corona virus family.

I've had various viral symptoms (including raised temp, enlarged glands, sore throat, blocked/runny nose, aching limbs) virtually constantly since start of Feb - in that time I've had about 5 days when I've been fit and healthy. BUT - i have not had a cough or breathing issues at all. Many people i have spoken to say they have similarly had symptoms which seem to have dragged on for weeks. There are no confirmed cases of CV in my county and i have not been abroad (or even out of the county until last night) so I'm pretty sure it's just the many usual viral type illnesses that do the rounds at this time of year.

GinDrinker00 · 07/03/2020 13:44

You don’t get a runny nose with coronavirus. You’ll be okay.

Hoik · 07/03/2020 13:46

I was fine until I read an article in the week about a British man living in Wuhan who claims he was one of the first sufferers, he say he had cold-like symptoms to start with which then progressed to flu-like symptoms

The original article about this man was in our local newspaper, before it hit national news, and was more detailed than the national story.

In the original story he waited until he was really ill before seeking medical attention because he didn't want to have to pay for a doctor. The doctor gave him medication, antivirals and antibiotics. Obviously antibiotics don't work on a virus but they do work on bacterial infections which can be secondary to a virus. He didn't take them and instead used herbal remedies including tiger balm. He was very ill but managed to keep a written diary of how he was feeling. He was still going out to pick up supplies like food and more tiger balm. Let's not forget too that he lives in an area of high air pollution where breathing difficulties are common.

The bottom line is that he felt like shit while he was unwell but he did not need to be hospitalised, did not take the prescribed medicines, and he recovered.

The main reason scientists are worried about COVID-19 is because it's new, it spreads quickly, and it's not fully understood yet. These things are concerning and it is additionally worrying for those who are vulnerable due to age or health conditions but it is not the end of days. You are unlikely to die from it. Take sensible precautions to protect yourself, comply with hygiene and isolation advice to avoid infecting vulnerable people so that they don't catch it, be considerate of resources such as healthcare, toilet roll, cleaning products, etc.

I remember similar levels worry during the Swine Flu epidemic including a rolling counter on the Sky News ticker of confirmed infected people (I think the final total was somewhere between 700,000-800,000), number of suspected cases, number of deaths, etc. There were shortages then too with hand gel and cleaning products selling out, lots of speculation that schools and work places would close, reports in the press that mass graves would have to be used and the army drafted in. Pretty much the same things we are seeing in the press now.

It's hard not to be worried but it's not the apocalypse.

gamerwidow · 07/03/2020 13:46

If you're not in the category currently advised self isolate and you don't have a temperature then just carry on as normal. I know the temptation to worry when it's all over the news but it's just a cold.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/03/2020 13:47

Sounds like a cold. They’ve not gone away because of Coronavirus unfortunately!
If you’re in Wales, there is a new online symptom checker that you can use : bit.ly/32YwRex

Hoik · 07/03/2020 13:48

The "runny nose = not COVID-19" is a bit of a myth by the way as some people with it do have a runny nose.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/03/2020 13:48

Don’t know why that link’s not worked but you can copy and paste it.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 13:48

Same here, my dc has weak immune system, and even a simple cold could be quite serious.
I just don't get people saying things OP says, she never mentioned about anything significant, being seriously immuno compromised, or being in contact with someone with potential positive results. It just makes people worried without reason. What we really need is real info. Most people with with good health and young age don't get very ill. Those with weak immune system and old age seems to suffer. So, if OP truly believes she may have got it, it's simple what she need to do. Self Isolate, so she won't spread it to others. She won't die from it., but others may.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 13:53

My comment was a respont to PigsDOfly.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 13:53

@Stormyjupiter I am in the at risk category. I have the flu vaccine every year and had had the pneumonia vaccine, all on the NHS.
That is why I am more worried about it than your average healthy person. But I can also acknowledge when I am being a bit hysterical.

blue25 · 07/03/2020 14:02

Well those aren’t the symptoms of Coronavirus, as you’d see if you read the government advice.

People need to stop these ridiculous posts.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 14:04

I can see that you are in the risk category. But have you had any reason to believe you are actually at the risk? I have asked you before, is there any people in the area you live who have positive results, or you have been in contact with someone who have been abroad recently, or do you take train or bus regularly, or live in the big city?

If you really think you really have it, do what you need to do. Self Isolate. Not just you, but all your family. It's the best you can do for the society. That is all. Just shouting OMG, I may have CV won't do any good. Silly.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 14:05

I missed your post. Yes one person in my city has the virus and yes I use public transport.

OP posts:
cinammonbuns · 07/03/2020 14:09

Why do people think the common cold has disappeared and anyone who has cold symptoms has the Covid-19. Genuine question.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 14:16

Great then. You can self isolate you and your family for 2 weeks. You will know the results by then. Make sure, that people dying is most likely to be the elderly, not children or parents of MN age. Do the responsible things and don't go out. Keep the likely to be affected children in as well. That's least you can do. At least, that's what is happening in the country like mine. School is closed, work place is closed, everything is shut down.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 14:19

No I can't self isolate my whole family for 2 weeks with a cold.

OP posts:
Throckmorton · 07/03/2020 14:23

Hey. There is an online 111 symptom checker so you can put your mind at rest:

111.nhs.uk/covid-19

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/03/2020 14:23

If you’re genuinely concerned owing to the fact that there’s been a case in your city and you use public transport then you need to follow the correct procedure.
Self isolate until you have received and acted upon advice from NHS 111.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 14:28

@Throckmorton That is really useful, thanks.

OP posts:
Springpea · 07/03/2020 14:30

Take your temperature? If it's over 37.5, maybe take some paracetamol? That's it, really.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 14:33

If you can't follow the procedure, than you are not serious enough to consider you are really affected, or, you are the one who don't care for the consequence of your actions.
You said it yourself, you can't self isolate your family for a cold . Be ashamed for yourself, there are people genuinely affected by this.

Throckmorton · 07/03/2020 14:34

No worries alloutoffucks - hopefully all is well and you just have a cold :)
