To ignore my symptoms?

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 12:58

I think I have a mild cold. Runny nose, headache, slight sore throat. Have been at work and done housework this morning, so hardly suffering badly.
But every so often I keep convincing myself I have the coronavirus. So earlier when reading about it I started coughing a bit. Last night I convinced myself I have a fever. I think it was just a bit hot in the living room.
So AIBU to ignore my symptoms and carry on as normal in the knowledge I am probably just being a bit hysterical?

As far as I’m aware a runny nose is not a symptom - it’s a chest infection not a head/sinus one. Crack on.

HappyHammy · 07/03/2020 13:02

Have you got a temperature

Witchend · 07/03/2020 13:02

Runny nose isn't a symptom, so you're fine.

DontBe · 07/03/2020 13:06

You’re being hysterical!

A cold isn’t a symptom of CV. And all the normal winter viruses are still available for everyone to catch. Not every virus is CV.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 13:08

Depends on where you are. Do your town has anyone positive? Have you had a contact with anyone who has been abroad?
I do have cough/runny nose and fever, but no, I don't think I have corona virus, because it's very unlikely.
But if I live in London, or any other major cities, and take trains or bus regularly, I would be more concerned, maybe.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 07/03/2020 13:09

I’m doing the same thing! Blocked nose, cough, sore throat, lost voice - none of this adds up to coronavirus but I think people are looking at me suspiciously as I croak at them! No temperature, though, so I think I’m fine.

Oldfail · 07/03/2020 13:14

Same here. Only one in family with dry cough, aching, head ache, sore throat, feel exhausted but temp is fine.

Not been abroad or know anyone that has been. Convinced its covid but dh keeps telling me I am being dramatic.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 13:15

But I can see the concern. Most young and able won't get the worst symptoms. They seems to get the simple cold symptoms, which is the problem, they spread the virus to others.
So as a point of view, concerned they may spread virus rather than I may die of virus, I can understand OP's concern.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 07/03/2020 13:16

I know 3 people who have just come back from Italy - one from Milan, one from Rome, and one from a skiing trip, not sure exactly where. And my BIL is in self-isolation because he was out for dinner with someone who was diagnosed with coronavirus a week later. BIL lives nowhere near us and we haven’t seen him since New Year, though.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 13:18

I don't feel that well. I don't have a fever. I have been hot a few times.
@DontBe I kind of know I am being hysterical.

Yes there has been a case in my City. No I have not been a close contact. Yes I may have had some contact, I don't know.

@oldfail I know how you feel. I get periodically convinced I have the virus, and then just think I am being hysterical and ridiculous.

I’ve had the same thing, on and off since last Friday. I was fine until I read an article in the week about a British man living in Wuhan who claims he was one of the first sufferers, he say he had cold-like symptoms to start with which then progressed to flu-like symptoms.

mrsdede · 07/03/2020 13:21

People keep dismissing cv if someone says they have the symptoms plus runny nose. Ok runny nose isn't a symptom. But surely you can have cv with an added runny nose!

Btw I don't think you have cv op 🤣

pigsDOfly · 07/03/2020 13:22

I know what you mean OP.

I'm not getting stressed about this virus at all, I'm retired and live in a small town, so no major interactions on public transport or work situations.

However, I've had several colds this winter and the latest one is horrible: slightly raised temperature at the beginning, headache, completely blocked nose, nasty cough and bringing up lots of nasty stuff, especially at night and in the morning, voice several octaves lower etc. And I've been feeling really rough for well over a week.

My logical brain knows that the symptoms are all wrong for the coronavirus and as far as I'm aware I've had no contact with any likely carriers, but my completely illogical brain keeps thinking, could it be?

I doubt you and I are the only ones OP.

pigsDOfly · 07/03/2020 13:24

Ah, I see that we're not the only ones.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 13:24

I am from the country which is affected seriously by cv. It's no joke. School has been closed, some of the county/state are asking people not to go out. There are positives in most of the part of the country, where my parents/relatives lives included. So, I can see people are worried, but I also think being hysterical without a reason a bit too dramatic and silly.

madroid · 07/03/2020 13:24

Not solely for your own sake, but the sake of anyone vulnerable around you, please call 111 for advice.

It's not hysterical, it's sensible and responsible to try to limit your potential to be spreading an infection.

Youngatheart00 · 07/03/2020 13:26

Now the virus is in the community, it’s not inconceivable that it is coronavirus. But even if it is, the chances are it won’t be any worse for you than a regular winter virus. However, if you want to do the decent thing, self isolate.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 13:26

I am not calling 111. They will tell me I have a cold and I will be wasting the time of a service that will already be far too busy.

OP posts:
Oldfail · 07/03/2020 13:29

Same here. I feel better today and not worse.

I have a rubbish immune system and dont get alot of sleep due to baby.

GinAndNightnurse · 07/03/2020 13:30

Runny nose is a sign that you HAVEN'T got Coronavirus.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 13:31

@Youngatheart00 I am actually at risk of serious complications with the virus. But I don't want to self isolate with a cold then get the virus later on. If I self isolate with a cold and take 2 weeks off, then get the virus and need at least 2 weeks off, that will be a month without pay at least and will be risky for my job.
If I had the virus I would self isolate. But it is not realistic for me to do it for every cold or small virus.

PrednoLeucotropin · 07/03/2020 13:34

Is it worth going to bed with a couple of hot water bottles and getting as warm as you can bear? I believe the chink in the armour of Covid-19 is that it can only operate in a relatively narrow temperature band.

I am planning to do a 'Marianne Dashwood' if I get symptoms I think may be Coronavirus.

Stormyjupiter · 07/03/2020 13:35

No, if you really are convinced, best thing you can do is self isolate yourself and your family. That's the best thing you can do, unless you are really suffering and dying from it. Like you said, there are not much they can do if your only symptom is runny nose and other mild cold symptoms, if you call 111.

lachy · 07/03/2020 13:36

I've been feeling rotten for a few days, but then I've had a constant cold and generally feeling unwell since Christmas.

I've just been unlucky with catching everything going. Logically I know I've got a cold, but I do get moments of "what if"? I think the irrational part of our brains sometimes goes into overdrive.

pigsDOfly · 07/03/2020 13:36

Stormyjupiter I don't think anyone is thinking the coronavirus is a joke.

I've have one of the underlying conditions that are listed as likely to mean it could be quite serious for me, which is probably why I'm feeling a bit unsure about what is, I know, a completely different virus.

I'm not surprised others feel the same.
