Just that really! 1000s of people and dogs!
From all around the world - touching and petting animals - lots of displays!!!

I think it should have been cancelled.

You could catch any other virus at any time. Why are you so scared of corvid-19. More people have died of flu. The media hype surrounding this virus is outstanding.

GinDrinker00 · 07/03/2020 08:14

@tdl2016 might have something to do with the death rate being between 3 - 4 percent Death rate (possibly higher) and the flu being 0.002 percent death rate. This isn’t something you can compare the flu too. I’m surprised crufts wasn’t cancelled either, we need to be proactive to contain the virius. China’s rate of infection has gone down only because they’ve been proactive and isolated and deep cleaned everywhere. I hope it’s not going to be to late by the time the UK do take action.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 07/03/2020 08:17

The media hype surrounding this virus is outstanding.

Well it can’t be that outstanding if you still don’t understand that it’s nothing like the flu, which kills approximately 0.1 percent of those that get it, whereas 6% of the recorded victims of COVID19 have died. It’s silently spreads, due to the fact that it can be asymptotic for up to two weeks and there is no vaccination.

I agree with you, OP. It was just pure greed by crufts, but then again, these people encourage irresponsible overbreeding and deformities in dogs, so it’s not surprising.

I think you do what you need to do, believing the scaremongering that the likes of the daily mail trot out only makes a bad situation worse. And the death rate is so high in percentage terms, because so few of the worlds population are infected.

GinDrinker00 · 07/03/2020 08:24

But it’s not daily mail. It’s official Figures! The amount of people burying their head in the sand is what is going to make this a hell of a lot worse. Even WHO are taking this very seriously!

TDL2016 · 07/03/2020 08:36

That’s an interesting stats website you linked.
I think it’s more worrying that you are so interested in the 3497 people have died of corvoid-19 and yet there is no where near as much concern for these stats:
Malaria (something that is absolutely treatable) 178297
Cancer 1492880
HIV/AIDS 305572
Suicide 194925

There are 7,769,214,839 people in the world and rising according to your stats website. It seems a very tiny proportion have very sadly died from corvoid-19. In fact, according to that website, more people have got it and survived than died.

TARSCOUT · 07/03/2020 08:41

For goodness sake it wasn't compulsory attendance, no one made them go. MaIL is there just now, nothing would have stopped her going and why should it. Shes more at risk from the mounds of dog poo she shovels each week!

HildegardeCrowe · 07/03/2020 08:45

I was very glad Crufts hadn’t been cancelled, it’s brought a sense of normality to the panic about the virus. The wildly different claims about the death rate don’t help either.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 07/03/2020 08:47

I keep seeing people stating that the media are scaremongering. Scientists spend a lot of time researching, charting data. Media are sourcing material from as official a source as they can, present this data and get called fear mongers.

I think what people mean is that the information scares them.
“If it scares me, you're spreading fear". “What you are telling me is scary, so you must be trying to scare me.”

Theres a also lot of self-soothing going on with people who call fear mongering. They don't want anybody interrupting their self delusion.

Only a small amount have died, because only a relatively small amount have actually caught it. You’re talking about numbers, whereas the emphasis should actually be on percentages. Whilst suicide is a tragedy, it’s not contagious and neither is cancer. There is prevention against malaria and you can take certain steps to help prevent the risk of catching aids.

COVID19 has no cure, is highly contagious and there’s no vaccination. Currently there is a death rate of 6% and 15% are critically ill. How do you think the NHS is going to cope if this spreads like it has in Italy? Do you think we have enough beds for the 15%, when we don’t have enough beds for those with chronic illnesses.

HildegardeCrowe · 07/03/2020 09:15

The death rate you quote of 6% is incorrect.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 07/03/2020 09:19

The death rate you quote of 6% is incorrect.

This is the death rate of closed cases. Sorry, I should have been clear about that. The death rate, when including active cases runs between 2-3%. The death rate for flu runs around 0.1%

UnderTheCherryTree · 07/03/2020 09:22

Well if the Hong Kong dog has indeed caught Coronavirus, or some close form of it, then I'd be very worried about a poochfest.

Lycidas · 07/03/2020 09:24

The UK government is doing fuck all and the NHS will feel the brunt of it in the coming months.

GetTheSprinkles · 07/03/2020 09:48

Dogs can't catch Coronavirus and can only potentially transmit it in the same way that e.g. a bank note or counter-top could.
One dog has tested weak positive in Hong Kong but they are not infected, the virus was simply detected inside their nose (their owner was infected).
If anything, Crufts is probably safer than other non animal-related gatherings as people will naturally be washing hands more.

Gertie75 · 07/03/2020 10:58

I was surprised they didn't cancel it, they've cancelled the big bang science fayre next week and a few more events afterwards are postponed, all much smaller events with less visitors.

The government said we were in the containment phase yet all they seemed to do was isolate individuals and trace who they'd been in contact with.

To me containment means stopping large gatherings that people travel miles to.
