Nr out of loo roll. Weekly shop today. Aldi, tesco asda x2 and sainsburys had none I mean not even the cheap stuff or fancy patternwd type ones.

Luckily wilko had some.

Couldn't even get pasta, prob have to just get in costco not to bulk panic buy but in hope they have some. I just don't get it there as storage here is crap.

Infant formula, ds can only tolerate one. I norm buy 4 at a time. Struggled to get that even

Now I knew about the handwash etc and always have that anyway.
Tesco cleaning aisle was also bare except the likes of oven cleaner, polish.. Everything antibac or likewise was gone!

I just want to shop normally.

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel that does make sense for a few people but the people seen buying 50 packets of super noodles is just mad and selfish. I like the off pack of bbq beef super noodles but even I would be hard pushed to eat 50 of them before the expiry date.

If people were still shopping normally then people who are self isolating and relying on others to shop for them would stand a chance of having their normal foods.

Bathroom12345 · 07/03/2020 08:47

It’s everyone for themselves! I was in the supermarket yesterday and people with excess loo roll were going through the self service check out to avoid potential questions - selfish buggers!

They of course will have plenty of excuses as to why they are different and need more than anyone else.

Women also saw 6 bottles of anti bac hand wash and took the whole lot. There were a few people berating the manager telling him that they need to restrict. How on earth do you do that, single person 2 rolls, family of 5? And people will claim they were buying for neighbours etc.

This is bringing out the worst in some.

FredaFrogspawn · 07/03/2020 08:51

We should all have those little retractable squirt-head hoses fitted beside the toilets in our houses like they have in some Indian homes. Cleanest and greenest way to ensure a sparkling arse whatever the state of Tesco shelves surely.

Howmanysleepsnow · 07/03/2020 08:52

It was fine here on Tuesday. Since then there’s been a few case diagnosed and last night there was no toilet roll in the supermarket. We get through 9 rolls in a week or so (there’s a lot of us). Luckily I bought just over a month’s worth on Tuesday!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 07/03/2020 08:52

@tapdancingmam - totally agree!!

itsgettingweird · 07/03/2020 08:53

I need to pop into town today and will park in the Tesco as need a few bits and so parking is free.

I need hand wash. Not panic buying but because I can only use the simple soap one due to my excema and I have 1cm left in the bottom of the bottle.

I buy 4 bags of pasta at a time because ds is an athlete and eats it at ridiculous rates. I hope I can still get that.
Wish me luck!

What I don't think people get is the current proportions.

15,000 people with illness have been tested. Less than 200 of those have been covid 19.

We are no where near a contain and isolate stage yet. I wish people would read the actual government pages and not the bleeding newspapers.

UntamedWisteria · 07/03/2020 08:56

It is ridiculous. I don't get the Toilet paper thing at all.

My local Tesco had only the most expensive TP left, no paracetemol (which I needed), bare shelves of all the anti-bacterial cleaners (didn't bother me as I know it doesn't work against coronavirus).

People are thick.

Bananalanacake · 07/03/2020 08:56

In German it's called Hamsterkäufe 🐹 it translates into hamster buying, referring to how a hamster stocks its pouches with food. I was tickled pink when my DP told me this.

endofthelinefinally · 07/03/2020 08:58

I am immunosuppressed and always carry hand sanitizer in case I can't access hand washing facilities. I do rely on it because my best defence is keeping my hands as clean as possible. I have hardly any left, and haven't been able to get any. Sad

Bathroom12345 · 07/03/2020 09:00

People are thick AND selfish! Claiming that THEY need more because DD uses loads, they are big family and of course THEY are more important than anyone else.

Get your DD to think about using less!

thecatsthecats · 07/03/2020 09:13

@Bathroom12345

I remember during the last panic buying during the snow of 2017, there was someone on here saying that they MUST buy their usual 24 pints of milk a week, WHY should they go without, WHY should their family cut use so that others could get their one pint, HOW DARE anyone suggest otherwise.

There was literally no talking to them.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 07/03/2020 09:13

Of course a big family is going to need more bog roll

Thats not hard to believe is it

flooredbored · 07/03/2020 09:20

For anyone short of loo roll. I just had a delivery from 'who gives a crap' this week. 48 double toilet rolls delivered no probs. I do usually buy them in that quantity as that is their standard box size!

endofthelinefinally · 07/03/2020 09:23

Just looked on Amazon. £100 for a 600ml bottle of hand sanitizer!!!

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 07/03/2020 09:26

floor

We buy bog roll in packs of 24, Have one unopened and one on the go, use about 3 rolls a week and then buy another pack on the next shopping day following opening the second pack if that makes sense

Always, always have had one pack open and one new (except when we had no money many years ago and dh used to pinch bog roll from his parents Grin)

Silvercatowner · 07/03/2020 09:28

Toilet roll is on offer in the Waitrose I've just visited. I was so anxious to not be judged as a panic buyer I only bought the one pack I'd gone in for.

Pebbles574 · 07/03/2020 09:30

Presumably there will be a surge with panic buying for a week or two then stocks will gradually replenish? People don't have infinite storage space, after all.

Stuckupsnob · 07/03/2020 09:33

I’ve self-isolated from the news and now I feel much better.

It’s brings out ridiculous actions in people.

MurrayTheMonk · 07/03/2020 09:35

I must live in area where people are extra calm in nature as none of the shops near me seem to have run out of anything much except hand sanitiser and ibuprofen and Ibuprofen hasn't been very available since January for some reason around here.

That said I did my big shop yesterday and despite having had no intention of buying anything extra I did find myself buying an extra few tins of soup 'just in case' so I'm not as immune to the desire to stock pile as I thought I was.
I guess that's why it happens. We're all a bit like sheep so if one person does it we all start to think we'd better as well in case there's nothing left and so it goes-rather than we're all doing it because we actually think we are going to be ill.

somanydevices · 07/03/2020 09:39

I stocked up because a family member's girlfriend was being tested for coronavirus. She had symptoms and had recently been somewhere it's credible that they could have been exposed. We spend a lot of time with this family member, had he got coronavirus, we would have needed to self isolate. So, for us, we thought it possible we could be at that stage, even if the country as a whole are.

Thankfully the tests came back negative. But it certainly made us think how we'd deal with being isolated. We stocked up lots. I don't understand the fuss about people doing this. Yes, it's unusual to see bare shelves in our shops, but at the moment they can replenish them quickly. If coronavirus hits, they won't be able to and then we'll have real panic buying. You'll feel a bit silly for not stocking up ahead of time, when the shops could easily replenish it. Or maybe some won't, they'll just carry using this to have a go at others...

I would expect many people are in a similar situation, where someone they know is ill with bog standard flu or a cold and they're worried it could be coronavirus, and stocking up so they can look after their families.

MurrayTheMonk · 07/03/2020 09:39

For hand sanitiser for the immune oppressed pp (and anyone else I guess) you could try construction suppliers websites....I got some and some heavy duty face masks for my care home from FirmFix yesterday, though they were starting to ration sales per transaction.

EggysMom · 07/03/2020 09:40

I'm waiting to see whether I get my full Tesco shop - the only 'panic buy' item on the list are bum-wipes for our disabled son, and that's just in case we end up self-quarantine for two weeks.

DH panics if we don't have a huge stock of toilet roll at any time of the year, so I've always got a stockpile of Nikki in the drawers of the spare bed Grin

somanydevices · 07/03/2020 09:41

Presumably there will be a surge with panic buying for a week or two then stocks will gradually replenish?

Depends what happens with coronavirus. If it spreads, then more people will understand the need to stock up so they're prepared for possible self isolation, so the bare shelves will increase, unless the shops manage to get on top of the increased demand.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 07/03/2020 09:47

It’s not at all unlikely that we’re about a week away from ‘social distancing’ measures being put in place.

I work in a big London office and I’ve been in talks this week about making sure we have everything we need in place if we shut the office and ask people to work from home. There’s a fair chance of school closures.

When I did my shopping list this week I looked not just at what we’ve run out of but what we’re likely to run out of next week - so I bought toilet rolls this week even though we’ve got a few in the house, likewise an extra bag of pasta, some frozen veg and some UHT milk.

I’m not expecting total self-isolation but if social distancing measures are brought in I’m not going to be grabbing a pint of milk on my commute as I would normally do and I can reduce how often I need to shop if the freezer is well stocked.

I’m not panicking or worried about catching the virus myself, but preparing for social distancing being a real possibility.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 07/03/2020 09:52

Went to asda yesterday. Whole shelf of paracetamol empty. Most of the loo roll isle gone, only a few dregs of pasta left and even the bags of frozen rice were cleared.
