What measures, if any, are your workplaces taking?

Curious to know the types of organisations and different measures.

I work for a corporate and UK travel has stopped and all external meetings have to be changed to teleconferences.

My husband also works for a corporate and they have dotted hand sanitizer all over the office but no other measures yet

Both still expected in the office as usual

HR created a coronavirus policy which I've not read cos the whole company works remotely 😄

A relative works for a big company in Canary Wharf and they've all been told to take their laptops home every evening.

StylishDuck · 07/03/2020 10:08

We've actually seen an increase in business over the last few weeks. It's a biotech company I work for and some of the products we make are used directly in the diagnostic kits for COVID-19 so I suspect the company is taking the view that we have to do our utmost to avoid having to shut down.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/03/2020 10:11

Nothing. I work for a small local business though and there are only 5 of us in the office and about 50 in the factory. We had an email sent out about hand washing etc but nothing major.

We sell goods to retailers, business hasn't been affected yet but we source mainly from the UK. Will see how it pans out.

maddy68 · 07/03/2020 10:18

None.

ceeveebee · 07/03/2020 10:18

Had anyone’s employer given any info about what they will do if 20% of their workforce is off sick? That’s the part that is worrying me as we are already a really lean team and struggle to get through work load as it is, but we probably will see a drop in business so might be ok.

How will the NHS cope if they have fewer staff available? And supermarkets if they have 20% fewer staff delivery drivers etc?

Anniecott · 07/03/2020 12:37

I work in a hairdressers, we now have soap in the stafffroom as well as the toilet 🤗

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 07/03/2020 12:41

HR email - wash your hands, currently no soap in the toilets though.

Butterfingers64 · 07/03/2020 12:50

BAU except you now need a senior manager to sign off on your travel.
Would be very possible for 95% of us to WFH but we have been firmly told it is BAU.

Large international organisation

WhyNotMe40 · 07/03/2020 12:55

Big secondary comprehensive school.
Staffroom has a solitary hand get bottle and we are telling the kids to wash their hands more. Which is logistically impossibly for them to actually do.
Apart from that, nothing. School trips, sports fixtures and multi school staff meetings still happening as planned...

WhyNotMe40 · 07/03/2020 12:55

Sorry for typos. Not wearing my glasses 🤣

CochonDinde · 07/03/2020 12:59

They've banned anyone who has travelled from Italy in the last fortnight not to come onto any of our sites. Attendance at conferences etc. are being heavily restricted. We've got a really good IT system that makes home working simple

Newdadtogirl · 07/03/2020 12:59

Sweet FA at the moment. My employers appear to think its no worse than the flu.
I see 20-100 members of the public every day, face to face.
I use gel and wash hands, also give the place a once over with dettol.

Scarily I work for a local authority!

PhoneLock · 07/03/2020 13:03

What is BAU?

bilboraggins · 07/03/2020 13:33

BAU is 'business as usual' @PhoneLock

Do those working from home have young dc? If nursery closes it will be almost impossible for me to work normally but no mention of this yet. Very much a 'wait and see' for a lot of us.

I work for a large local charity, we have been sent emails with details of what to do daily in the office and are being kept up to date. In the retail side we have vulnerable older people who volunteer who have been told to stay at home for a couple of weeks to keep themselves safe as in our County we now have quite a few cases

I have very recently returned from a two week holiday, 2 reported cases there this week but none whilst I was visiting
I have now unfortunately gone down with flu and yesterday was advised by HO to go home and talk to 111, which I have done and because I spent time in large airports I have been told to self isolate and if my symptons worsen to phone again
A waiting game, but I’m positive I’ve just got flu but I can’t take the risk because of the nature of my work

middleager · 07/03/2020 16:22

So I'm reading that public sector/LAs/schools and unis seem to be doing very little, including my own workplace, which is not taking this remotely seriously, has no soap etc.
This is even more worrying given that super spreader children are about.

While big corporates (like my husband's firm) have business continuity plans, asking staff to wfh/no travel abroad/ minimising public transport oh and loads of sanitiser wipes.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 07/03/2020 16:26

Workforce of under 20 here but some of them have daily contact with clients - boss is doing absolutely nothing and thinks the world has gone mad.

Mummyoftwo91 · 07/03/2020 16:39

Gp surgery here, none atm lol

AnneElliott · 07/03/2020 17:06

Civil service - we've had lots of emails about hand washing etc.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 17:15

Middle we have had some token gels put out but no one told the students and I doubt they notice these things. At points where its really needed there is nothing.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 07/03/2020 17:21

NHS mental health. Pretty much business as usual apart from extra emails about hand washing. We've also been told we cannot order more hand sanitizer as stocks are low.

I did ask how we would nurse any patients if they caught it (it's a long stay ward) since we dont really have the means to isolate people or the adequate masks etc. No one really knows. Theres also no plan on how we will staff the ward if a lot of people do end up in isolation.

If feels very unprepared to be honest.

DelurkingAJ · 07/03/2020 17:22

DH’s school has cancelled fixtures and Open Day and have daily meetings of SLT.

My work has banned all but essential travel and is desperately working out who can’t WFH. They are most worried about the call centres. Reassuring emails about sick pay have been sent but a slightly more carefully worded one about what to do if schools close. Seems proportionate to me.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 07/03/2020 17:24

Probably because private businesses potentially lose a lot of money if a large portion of their workforce is hit with the virus and/or self isolation.

When theres shareholders/profits at stake people tend to care more.

heidihigh · 07/03/2020 17:35

I work in retail for a relatively large UK company. We have had 2 bottles of hand sanitiser sent to every store. Other than that, zilch. Nothing about my job or my colleague's jobs can be done from home either. Meetings etc still going ahead. Rather concerned and disappointed

miafeta · 07/03/2020 17:40

We travel extensively and literally around the world. So far we have been following government advice and travel to China and Iran is banned. However, colleagues returning from China, Italy etc were not self isolating or asked to stay at home despite the flexibility we have to work from home. Hand sanitiser is provided and we take laptops home. I am quite sure it is inevitable for us to get it due to the travel.
