Any point calling 111?

Had a sore throat yesterday, getting worse today. Started shivering and aching all over. Temperature of 38.9. But haven't travelled or been in (known) contact with anyone that has. Only 2 cases in my large city. Feel better with ibuprofen. I'm guessing if I ring 111 they'll just say it's a different virus? Don't want to be alarmist but also don't want to ignore symptoms and potentially cause a spread!

I would call them just in case?

Sounds more like viral tonsillitis to me OP! From what I've read CV is a worse form of the flu- flu does not feel better with painkillers. Stay in tonight, alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen and drink plenty of fluids. If you feel worse tomorrow and can't get through to 111 call your pharmacist.

I've just done the online thing for 111 and it says based on my answers I don't need to ring. Interesting, DD is just getting over tonsillitis but I didn't think it was contagious.

It depends what caused your daughters tonsilitis - if it was bacterial it can be very contagious. I had strep throat last year, confirmed by a swab, and my doctor asked me wear a mask till the antibiotics kicked in because it's so contagious.

If you decide to contact 111 use the online service. They are swamped on the phones so are asking people to use the online checkers first

@calmyobadself that's what I thought, I didn't want to waste their time just for them to tell me it's likely to be tonsillitis or some other virus. I decided not to ring and have just been alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol, temp has come down but throat still very painful.

@ViveLEntenteCordiale the doctor didn't say which type she had but prescribed antibiotics so I assume they thought it was more likely bacterial so that probably explains it.

I think they're burying their head in the sand. No-one is being swabbed unless from a high risk area (or I guess, unless ill enough to need hospital) - so they can't possibly know how many community cases there are.

No point ringing, I did for my DH last night - they won't do anything.

foamrolling · 06/03/2020 07:34

There's nothing you've said that suggests it may be coronavirus so no point ringing for that reason.

The more we can keep the emergency services for just that, emergencies and self diagnose relatively trivial complaints then the more resilient these services will be when we will most need them. That's where sites like these can be at their most useful.
