Does it have to be with hot water or will cold do?

Either. It’s the length of time and soap application that matters though some soaps don’t lather very well with cold water.

Either is fine. You just need to do it for long enough.
Obviously hot is nicer!

And use hand cream. "Manly" Norwegian formula stuff if other stuff is too smelly. Currently on offer in Boots.
