OK Sounds a bit silly ,but have big birthday coming up later this year .Really looking forward to spending it with friends in the States .AIBU to worry about booking ATM ? What if travel restrictions come in place to stop Air Travel (worst case scenario obv!) Was really looking forward to going ,seems to have cast a bit of a shadow on a much longed for trip!

I’m in the same predicament dottiedodah. Due to go in May. We need to decide in the next 4 weeks to minimise the financial impact. At the moment I don’t see any reason not to go to be honest. I think we will be as safe there as here. DH says we should still go & im tempted to agree with him. I’m sure in 3 months things will have changed hopefully for the better.

dottiedodah · 03/03/2020 13:28

Hi Strictly ,thanks for reply .We dont go until September ,so like you say the situation may have changed by then . I would assume Travel Insurance would pay out if any problems .Really annoying as I was so looking forward to spending my birthday out there ! It is so difficult ,My DS and his GF are due to go over in April as well! Part of me thinks like your DH, I cant see many people not wanting to have their holidays ,but BJ was on TV saying only essential travel (Worse case scenario obv!)

Yes definitely make sure you have travel insurance that covers any fco cancellations I’m just looking into that myself. It’s so hard to know what to do isn’t it. Have you booked already? If not then maybe just hold back a month or 2. You’ve got plenty of time. I need to have a proper discussion with him before we pay the final amount as it’s a lot of money Having said this, if we were due to fly next week I would definitely be going as long as flights don’t get cancelled of course! I have a feeling we are going to have to live with coronavirus for quite a while so I’m tempted to just carry on as normal as much as possible.

Nicknacky · 03/03/2020 19:29

I’m going to be really really selfish here but I’m going to florida in May and only won’t be going if advised not to but I kinda hope people chose not to go so the queues at the parks are smaller 🙈

Buddyelf · 03/03/2020 19:42

Similar boat OP, I’m off to the states in June and plan to go unless flights are cancelled. I’m a bit worried they will be and my dream trip won’t go ahead.

Strictly1972 · 03/03/2020 20:09

@Nicknacky I thought the same 😂 I’d be grateful if there were less people as long as I can get to a bath & body works! We are going west coast first then over to Florida keys for a week and I really don’t want to cancel. Obviously if we can’t go due to fco advice or cancelled flights that’s fine but if the situation is the same as at the moment I will be going. Presume if flights get cancelled that will be covered by insurance & we can reschedule

MadisonAvenue · 03/03/2020 20:16

I know just what you mean about it casting a shadow over a trip. We've booked to go to California in May and I had to pay the final balance last week and I really wrestled with whether to go ahead or not.

Divebar · 03/03/2020 20:29

I’ve got a big birthday this summer and was considering California.... I’m not actually sure where would be a better option? I don’t see that the threat is greater there than here but what the hell do I know?

Strictly1972 · 03/03/2020 20:30

I’ve just spoken to my dh again & we are going for it. We are touring not planning on doing theme parks etc just want to see nice beaches and explore the Pacific coast & alt hour accommodation is booked our day to day plans are quite fluid so if it’s quieter or things are closed we will just find alternatives. I’m hoping it will have peaked before we go which from what they are saying could be viable.
There’s always something to worry about isn’t there. Before coronavirus I was worried about going after Trump killed the military leader in Iran so I’m trying to stick with the keep calm carry on mantra. DH is quite rational & less emotional which helps me.

Strictly1972 · 03/03/2020 21:01

@Divebar I agree. I guess the risk is quarantine or delays/access to some activities. We are heading to California too. We’ve had it booked since last August & it’s been a trip we’ve been wanting to do for many years.

dottiedodah · 03/03/2020 21:22

Strictly ,Hi again ! Yes this is what I was worried about ,travel Insurance havent looked into it yet, but was thinking of trying tomorrow to see what they say .Makes life difficult as we are staying with friends over there who have booked 2 weeks off! Know what you mean about worries over Trump ! My DS is coincidentally going to California in April with his GF, hes in his 20s and isnt bothered at all!(Went to Thailand in January came home ,had flu and was tested and sent home for 3 days) all clear, So somewhat blase now !

We're supposed to be going to northern Italy next month!

dottiedodah · 03/03/2020 21:29

Divebar My main worry is flying out TBH .Being ill /catching the bug on the plane. Hopefully they will sort something out fairly soon .Travel Industry will be on its knees otherwise ! Really difficult to change plans as my big birthday too .and its the first time I have ever been on holiday on the actual day ! As stated above DS going to California ,and not bothered at all (20 something obv) Mum does all his worrying for him!

I read this and found it interesting. I’m going to take antibac wipes and wipe down the trays & seats

@Strictly1972 That’s reassuring, thanks for the link. Also starting to worry about cancellations as we are off to the US this year but determined to go if we can.

Strictly1972 · 03/03/2020 22:01

I’ve also started us all on vitamins. Not sure if it actually makes any difference but it gives me peace of mind.

Strictly1972 · 03/03/2020 22:04

This might also be of interest. I presume I gets updated regularly.
As you can probably tell I’ve been having this debate about going with myself recently

Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert has written an interesting piece about travel insurance. For those who have already booked their trips it’s worth reading to check out if you need any “add ons” to policies you might already have. Otherwise it gives the cheapest policies that are currently covering COVID-19 related cancellations.

Strictly1972 · 04/03/2020 07:35

@Divebar I’ll have a look at that this evening thank you.

Sunshinesky1981 · 04/03/2020 14:18

We are going to Orlando in August for 3 weeks, we are staying at a disney hotel and then a universal studios hotel, and have lots of Character meals/ Buffet dinners booked - in other words we are a viruses dream :)

All we can do is keep to medical advice. I always take anti bac wipes and wipe down arm rest/ tray tables/ touch screens on Airplanes ever since watching someone change a babies nappy on the tray table on a flight Envy Vom! Will make sure we have Paracetamol / Calpol /Hydration tablets and a thermometer with us. Will also take a 2nd Emergency credit card to cover any extra costs if things go wrong. Will be printing out and giving a copy of all our insurance, medical details, contacts, and details on how to deal with my own bills at home to my mum incase we are stuck. Will be taking hand gel with us to the park etc , but am hoping to still go ahead with the trip... Am also hoping that it may even be a bit quieter Grin

With Insurance we are with Aviva and added travel disruption cover as an extra which should mean we are covered. Only issue is they have a low limit on excursion tickets but i would think that Disney US would follow Hong Kong/Shanghi example and extend ticket life or refund if needed.

But i wouldn't worry... The fact that i have done all of this, means that by the time we go in August this Virus will be a distant memory, but knowing the luck i have the day after we arrive we will be hit by a hurricane Grin

Strictly1972 · 04/03/2020 14:57

Well it’s at our local hospital now so there’s no point staying here! Safe travels everyone x

Chickydoo · 04/03/2020 15:03

Due to go to India in 3 weeks, I'm going 100% unless gov tells me otherwise

dottiedodah · 04/03/2020 16:31

SunshineSky Yes now just what you mean about Hurricane etc .What concerns me is that we are staying with friends there ,and its my big birthday ! So dont really want to go any other time .Heres hoping it settles down for us all and we have good trips eh! Chicky Good for you !
