Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

Why does everyone think that people who work in supermarkets are on zero hours and minimum wage?

Because a lot of them are Hmm. There are loads of people on zero hours jobs. Even a lot of care work is zero hours, as is a lot of delivery work.

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 16:23

Avoiding other people would be fine but avoiding my family harder.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 01/03/2020 16:24

If you choose to travel, you may be required to self-isolate if the area is deemed a risk on your return.

If I was unwilling or unable to self-isolate if required, then actually I would not travel, I'd cancel my trip.

Very selfish to choose to go and refuse to self-isolate, risking a pandemic.

People saying "my insurer won't let me cancel"... Actually they won't refund you for cancelling. They aren't frog marching you onto the plane.

The number of people who literally have to travel and literally can't self isolate will be tiny.

It's very frustrating to have so many people working so hard to contain and manage this, and somebody thinking "fuck it, I don't want to lose my holiday"

Aridane · 01/03/2020 16:24

Yes / I would self isolate in accordance with government advice . But no zI wouldn’t start self isolating where not required (in the absence of symptom) - eg Thailand

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 16:25

As for pp online delivery is easy in terms of distancing. Just leave and I’ll get it.

Boppingbooper321 · 01/03/2020 16:25

But it doesn't actually have a high death rate

Do you know more than the CDC/WHO? Because you might want to pass that onto them? All current information states that it is impossible to work out an accurate death rate. The reported stats vary between less than 1% up to 17%. No one can predict how that will change, it may go up or down by the time we start to see a large increase in cases in the UK. Which is why I said "if the virus has such a high death rate in the UK" in my previous post.

schoolrummum · 01/03/2020 16:25

Top tip from a friend who successfully avoided swine flu in her own home is to get rid of hand towels. They just used kitchen towel/paper towels.

Would self isolate myself but we're relying on everyone doing the right thing and following guidelines. Basic hand hygiene and not sneezing/coughing everywhere. My BIL and SIL are just back from Singapore but decided it was fine to expose elderly relatives plus go to a friends big birthday celebration. That's the nonsense we're dealing with. Arrogant idiots thinking they know better and just doing their own thing.

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/03/2020 16:28

I am amazed by some of the responses on here.
I will follow the official advice as and when it comes.
If you are advised to be quarantined it can be enforced by law.
There is loads of planning going on so that food deliveries etc can cover a wider population.
Workplaces cannot overide official advice in the case of an emergency. It is absolutely true that as things stand it would be a disaster for the self employed but hopefully some sort of funding will be made available.

ArthurandJessie · 01/03/2020 16:29

I don't think not getting paid is a good reason to be honest peoples health and well being is more important than money ! As a pregnant woman and in the high risk category I'd be fuming if I got sick because someone was that selfish to bring it to work 😡

Mumofgals · 01/03/2020 16:29

I could self isolate & would probably be paid but I'm not sure how it would work logistically as I am a nurse. We couldn't all self isolate so how do we choose which of us stay home & which of us look after the patients? Realistically it wouldn't work. We are also considered an emergency service & during danger to life / do not travel weather warnings etc we are expected to be at work.

@Boppingbooper321

On Sunday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the UK government's "very best assessment" was that the mortality rate was "2% or, likely, lower".But it depends on a range of factors: your age, sex and general health and the health system you are in

Those odds seem fine to me.

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/03/2020 16:33

I dont think not getting paid is a good reason to be honest

You think people should starve to death for the greater good? Or lose their homes? Seriously?

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 16:34

I don't think not getting paid is a good reason to be honest peoples health and well being is more important than money !

So how are people who have NO money, NO access to credit, no one to borrow from, and believe me, there a lot of people in that predicament, should just live off fresh air?

idontlike789 · 01/03/2020 16:35

Good one , I'll tell that to my bank when I can't pay the mortgage I'm sure they will let me off not paying .

DowntownAbby · 01/03/2020 16:36

Why do we need so many threads about bloody corona virus?

Thread after thread after thread.

It's getting ridiculous.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/03/2020 16:37

Unfortunately going by these figures, self isolation won’t work the way it is working in China. Those living in China wouldn’t dare not obey the quarantine from what I understand. On this basis, planning should be for a worse outbreak in the uk, not better.

I would self isolate. But like many on these threads, I have the means and opportunity to do so.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 16:45

We would not challenge the quarantine because consequences would be severe. I have received information from my compound mgt regarding this.
Of course, I would self isolate, it is irresponsible not to. However, it is vital that people are supported during self isolation/quarantine. Dh’s company paid all employees when people were instructed to stay at home. We also received notice that nobody would be cut off if power bills were not paid on time.

idontlike789 · 01/03/2020 16:45

Live in an urban environment where I could get food delivered
This made me laugh too look if they want people to self isolate or it's enforced who's going to deliver your Tesco food shop ? Who's going to pack it ? Who's ordering the food in , paying the bills etc ?
We live in a world now where everything is online and you don't need to leave the house but all these things to get your food shop to your door involve people if these people self isolate they will be no food delivery's .
It's not at easy as your saying to self isolate, at the moment it's just financial will I get paid and will I have to take dc out of school etc but if it is enforced and it's going to be whole towns etc then it needs to be planned properly. How are we going to live / eat / drink and what if someone needs urgent medical care ? .

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 16:47

We also received notice that nobody would be cut off if power bills were not paid on time.

How does that work for people on meters?

Sockwomble · 01/03/2020 16:47

I would self isolate at home but would have to mix with dh and ds some of the time due to the level of care ds needs.

SonjaMorgan · 01/03/2020 16:51

I am in a privileged position now, I would be able to and yes I would.

Years ago I was a single parent who was living paycheck to paycheck. In that situation no I wouldn't (without full pay) and I went into work with D&V. Yes it is selfish but I couldnt have lived on SSP for 2 weeks.

HeIenaDove · 01/03/2020 16:51

zero contract jobs.............Tory policy

UC (non attendance of JC appointment = sanction and UC itself ......Tory policy

@datasgingercatspot Some are getting angry at the wrong people. This virus is showing up these policies for what they are. Wonder how many on here voted for these.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 16:53

@datasgingercatspot
I live in China. Do you mean meters where you have to put coins in for electric? Have never seen them here.

TW2013 · 01/03/2020 16:56

I could easily self isolate, but I would find it really hard not to go into a room and look after ill children.
