Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

I honestly think they need to consider stopping flights for 14 days, that could have a huge impact on helping stop the spread of it. Just testing peoples temp at the airport, is useless.

ivykaty44 · 01/03/2020 14:39

Best that someone who is a a greater risk of dying, like my dd who has a serious lung condition, is exposed than you get into serious trouble with work

So what will you do if nurses at hospital or pharmacy shut due to self isolation?

ivykaty44 · 01/03/2020 14:40

Where would you put all the airplanes?

Hannah888 · 01/03/2020 14:42

Yes I would self isolate. The government announced last week that all who have to self isolate must be paid. This won't apply to the self employed for obvious reasons.

TabbyMumz · 01/03/2020 14:43

"Where would you put all the aeroplanes?"

Err on the ground of course...what a weird question. Where do you think they all went went 9/11 ordered them all down over America? They all landed!!!

ivykaty44 · 01/03/2020 14:44

Err there isn’t enough room...

AlternativePerspective · 01/03/2020 14:44

Since most supermarkets don’t actually use plastic bags any more that theory goes out of the water.

And Ocado are far too expensive for many.

Besides which self isolation means you are not supposed to come in contact with anyone so that should include delivery drivers.

Imagine potentially killing someone because you want to go for a run or get some milk. o don’t be so dramatic. Far, far more people die of the flu, the death rate from Corrona is estimated at around 1% and many of those are in the 3rd world where conditions are far different to here. yet we don’t talk about potentially killing people if we go out with a cold or the flu.

If you’re allowing deliveries and such during self isolation then you might just as well not bother self isolating in the first place.

And I speak as someone with underlying health conditions who would be at risk should I catch the virus.

But people are talking as if death is a certainty when it is far from it.

This isn’t Ebola we’re talking about.

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:44

@Aragog and I'm trying to get people to look at the middle ground. Two weeks stuck at home is not a disaster by any means IF you are being paid. But the idea that you can reasonably expect people to dance around you is very childish.
The family of DD's friend is going through a tough time and people are , naturally, rallying round because a) people are nice and b) it's no real inconvenience or hardship to do it. Luckily for this person there are lots of willing helpers. But what if there are fewer helpers or none at all?

TabbyMumz · 01/03/2020 14:44

"The government announced last week that all who have to self isolate must be paid."
Are you sure? I dont think they did. I think were referring to sick pay.

lovehome · 01/03/2020 14:44

I am sure those who are having to self isolate are getting contact from the Department of Health so any major issues with needing food and not be able to work will be helped best they can ... the ppl brought out of China and put into isolation were given great assistance by the Department of Health with there needs

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 01/03/2020 14:45

Do food banks deliver?

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:45

"Unfortunately that is real life for them and their families cat afford to have a fortnights food stored away"
And that's a reason for people who can put a bit by not to because....

TabbyMumz · 01/03/2020 14:46

Err there isn’t enough room...

Of course there is!!!! That's how the hundreds of planes in the air at 9/11 landed. Did you not see the video of them all disappearing of the radar as they all landed one by one!!!

flirtygirl · 01/03/2020 14:46

This thread just shows how selfish so many people are.

It's quite easy to self isolate and only the very poorest solely. Not have a chance to build uo some food and medicine stores.

The government could also solve the question of pay by making it mandatory that anyone told to self isolate is paid from a government fund. Poorer countries have down similar especially those like Thailand affected in tourism which is their major industry.

But people will be selfish as they would rather think it doesn't apply to them. I will happily send isolate from all the pillocks walking around who never even wash their hands. The simplest of all measures.

Mintjulia · 01/03/2020 14:47

One of our team is self isolating because his daughter just came back from a school skiing trip to the Italian alps, with a sore throat. He checked with our CEO for advice, who couldn’t get him out of the office fast enough.
Employers who can’t see the risk are mad. If a case is confirmed, they’ll have to close, have the entire workplace deep cleaned and ask all other staff to isolate, which could take some companies under.
Any boss with sense will send the first person home with a laptop and permission to stay there.

It’ll be interesting to see the legalities too. If an employer insists on staff coming to work even though a relative has a confirmed case, and then someone else catches it, does that make the company vicariously liable?

ivykaty44 · 01/03/2020 14:47

am sure those who are having to self isolate are getting contact from the Department of Health so any major issues with needing food and not be able to work will be helped best they can

And back in the real world, DofH won’t be assisting

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:49

There's not enough room to store a few extras for a couple of weeks comfortably.Hmm
What about a bit uncomfortably? Is that too hard?

picklemewalnuts · 01/03/2020 14:49

Yes I would, and we've discussed who would use what bathroom. However, I will get paid anyway.

Also the dog would refuse to be isolated from me and anyone else in the house, so may act as a vector. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Selmababies · 01/03/2020 14:51

I'm amazed that a whopping 22% have said they won't self isolate if it's advised they should! In this scenario it's very likely that it's going to spread like wildfire as it's obvious that it's VERY contagious! Various towns and cities in the world wouldn't be in lockdown if it wasn't.
I'm normally a pragmatic and calm sort of person, but have a chronic lung condition, and I'm seriously considering whether it would be sensible to indefinitely self isolate myself fairly soon, even though I haven't travelled or been in contact with any infected person etc.
Is anyone else considering doing the same?

Boppingbooper321 · 01/03/2020 14:51

So what will you do if nurses at hospital or pharmacy shut due to self isolation?

Pray that my dd copes without their services and doesn't die??
More seriously, I'm not panicking or overly worried to be honest. We are making sure we keep a supply of the medication she needs to keep well and there's not a lot I can do about the things out of our control like nurse/pharmacy staffing levels.

I'm just shocked that so many people consider their personal convenience more important than other people health and life. If we do see massive levels of infection here the majority of us will be fine but the reality is some people won't be and we all have to take responsibility for how we spread or contain the viruses if we are a risk.

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:53

Given some of the lazy selfish nonsense, I've read on here, it's a bit unrealistic of the government to think this will stay in tiny pockets of individuals.

PixieDustt · 01/03/2020 14:54

Yes I would.

itsgettingweird · 01/03/2020 14:58

I would. However it wouldn't be easy. I can't separate from ds who has autism and I'm a LP.
I couldn't ask parents for help as both immunocompromised.

I can follow the online shop advice and to leave by front door etc and could ask friends to pick up emergency supplies and leave outside my front door.

I really would have to isolate though as live in a flat so I have no idea what I'd do about bins? Can't really ask anyone else to take them out as that is exposing them potentially and taking them out myself is using a communal area.

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 01/03/2020 15:00

Of course I would. There's no way I would want to be responsible for a local outbreak and further compromise the health of anyone around with already poor health. Can you imagine being the person that didn't self - isolate, then being directly responsible for the death of people in your community? Unthinkable.

It wouldn't be fun or easy, but this virus is being taken this seriously for a reason.

Aragog · 01/03/2020 15:03

Besides which self isolation means you are not supposed to come in contact with anyone so that should include delivery drivers.

Even Public Health England suggest online deliveries. You don't need to come into contact with the drivers. You arrange for it to be left on the doorstep or in the garden. I have had to do this previously due to being delayed coming home for a delivery. It was fine.

Lots of online supermarkets still use plastic bags. For some it is an option, for others it is automatic.
