Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

You can get food and medicine delivered! How selfish!

What an urban centric view
No online grocery deliveries here and no takeaway outlets that deliver.
I could shoot/catch a bit of wildlife but we are moving into the breeding season.

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:11

Do delivery drivers never have to worry about school lock downs ? Do they never need to self isolate? Seriously. Think practically now so you don't need to start complaining later.

Aragog · 01/03/2020 14:12

Again, who is going to do your shopping?

Well at present, as it is only a small number who need to self isolate I would use Ocado or similar, our milkman, take away deliveries, local pharmacy deliveries and friends who live nearby. I would also do the same for them.

Obviously if the situation changes and the whole city or country is getting shut down and lots of people have to self isolate all at the same time its a little different. I always have some basic supplies in - full freezer and cupboards of food, always have 2 or 3 packs of toiletries. etc in. Though I wouldn't normally have milk in so if that was a likely risk I guess I'd get some in. Im not doing that just yet though as that isn't a high risk where I am just yet, and thinks like uhh milk would get wasted as we wouldn't chose to drink it normally. If we got caught out I'd have to get used to black tea quickly!

I’ve seen some hysteria regarding Coronavirus on here over the last couple of weeks but this thread is demonstrating the opposite. I can’t believe how many are selfish enough to not follow guidelines out in place specifically to stop the spread of a disease that can kill people. Utter stupidity.

HermioneWeasley · 01/03/2020 14:13

Self isolation is bollocks

We shouldn’t be letting people travel to those countries if it’s so risky.

Aragog · 01/03/2020 14:14

bellinisurge You are talking about whole swathes of people needing to self isolate which, at present, isn't actually happening in the UK. At the moment we are talking about very low numbers of people.

Doesn't it say at the moment that under 10s don't seem to be affected so much? Maybe its time to train up those littles ones to carry on our lives for us ;)

Workplaces just won’t allow time off work like this, I can’t work from home & I’d get into serious trouble

Well, they would have to in this circumstance. And quite frankly, it’s still better than spreading a disease which can kill vulnerable people.

Ethelfleda · 01/03/2020 14:18

Besides, if you have a job like this then you don’t go to visit an infected area. That’s simple enough.

OhCaptain · 01/03/2020 14:20

Imagine potentially killing someone because you want to go for a run or get some milk.

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:22

@Aragog , I get that. But in parts of Northern Italy, that doesn't seem to be enough. Without panicking, without getting in a tizz, wouldn't it be sensible for people to look at how they could be more self reliant on this? Or us that impossible without people getting into a state?

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 01/03/2020 14:23

@Ethelfleda work places will have to allow the time off. But they won't pay people for it.
For those in the bread line 2 weeks of the sole or both earners could be the difference between the children eating or not.

Aragog · 01/03/2020 14:27

Unfortunately not everyone has the storage space or the spare money to buy up loads of food they may need or two weeks in advance. A lot of people really do live day to day, deciding what and if they can afford to buy it.

KingaRoo · 01/03/2020 14:27

Ocado don't have paper receipts or require a signature. They deliver in plastic bags and can leave them at the door. They also price match their own products with Tesco. I love Ocado!

If you don't have online delivery where you live hopefully you have a friend or relative that can bring you things. Or contact your local community centre or church and ask for help?

I'm hoping this whole thing educates people about general hygiene and washing hands properly!

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:30

@Aragog , but patronising there. There are plenty of budget options and it's not like this is a great surprise dropped out of the blue.
Yes there are people who absolutely cannot but there the majority of people could have started bit by bit.
Surely it's better to sort yourself out so you aren't a nuisance for the emergency services with your avoidable problems.

TabbyMumz · 01/03/2020 14:30

Lots of people wont do it because people never believe it will happen to them. Look at all the people who come on here talking about people taking children out that are infectious with chicken pox and such like.

Boppingbooper321 · 01/03/2020 14:31

Best that someone who is a a greater risk of dying, like my dd who has a serious lung condition, is exposed than you get into serious trouble with work Hmm

Incredibly selfish attitude. What might be an inconvenience for you and me is life threatening for others so how disgusting that some people would choose to put their convince first.

I wouldn't get paid but if I was told to self isolate to keep other people safe I absolutely would.

I can't see us as a nation getting to the point where self isolation on a large scale is necessary. But to all of those that have said they would 'just' pop to the shop or whatever if they needed to self isolate- if you are a risk to others please think about the impact you could have. You will pop to the shop, get better and go about your daily life. A family like mine could lose a child.

TabbyMumz · 01/03/2020 14:31

Plus there have been lots of children come back from school trips in Italy that havent self isolated. Two schools closed the other 20 odd, didnt!!!

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:33

The government is full of bollocks with its "war footing" shit it's come out with. But it doesn't treat people like self reliant grown ups. We're all babies that can't be asked to do anything for ourselves. Even asking people to wash their hands is a big deal.

Boppingbooper321 · 01/03/2020 14:33

*convenience

Abraid2 · 01/03/2020 14:35

It depends who was telling me to self isolate. Official/trusted source, yes.

Someone on MN getting overwrought, no.

TabbyMumz · 01/03/2020 14:36

They would have to allow you the time off, but they dont have to pay you. If you are sick, it could be basic sick pay.

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 14:36

Trying to ask questions of grown ups.

bumblingbovine49 · 01/03/2020 14:36

For goodness sake. Of course delivery of.food.is ok. They leave it by the door in plastic bags and forego the signature.

How do you think people in Wuhan are eating. Some have been allowed out to shop very rarely but some have also been getting food deliveries.

Some people in these areas have been in quarantine and not allowed out of their building for over a month. They are not starving to death. I am sure they are pretty depressed and worried though

Aragog · 01/03/2020 14:37

@Aragog , but patronising there.

Not really. I work with several children where parents are literally having to go to the shops on the way home to see what they can get from the bargain shelf, or having to visit food banks weekly. Some of these don't have freezers in their homes. Unfortunately that is real life for them and their families cat afford to have a fortnights food stored away.

I am in a position where I do have space and money to have stocks in, but I am also not into this whole 'prepping for a disaster,' be that Brexit, Coronavirus or whatever, thing which some people I read on here are. I think most people could get by for a fortnight though may struggle with fresh produce like milk and eggs. But there are also a significant minority of families who just can't.

And look what this manic buying has lead to at the moment - currently hand wash, antibac gels, cleaning wipes, etc are in low stock across the country including on online shops.

There is a middle ground I think.
