Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

@Standandwait that family were experts, had lived in Wuhan for years. They chose to go back to the States knowing they'd be quarantined. They didn't expect to pay for it but come on. Why should a country where they didnt live and didn't pay taxes cover the cost when it wouldnt do that for those who live and work there? Everyone knows free health care in the States isnt a thing.

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/03/2020 21:06

expats not experts. Sorry

JustDanceAddict · 01/03/2020 21:07

Yes I would. It would be hideous but I’d do it. Dh and DCs are out the house in the day so at least I could make my food and then clean up w anti-bacs
We have 2 bathrooms so I’d commandeer one.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 21:08

@Aragog
You have to self isolate in Australia if you come from any province in China, not just Hubei.

damnthatanxiety · 01/03/2020 21:15

I suspect those that are freaking out the most are also the ones that would refuse to do the right thing themselves

greathat · 01/03/2020 21:59

I would I'm pretty sure. Assuming work didn't get arsey about it. I'm a teacher with gcse and a level groups

Aridane · 01/03/2020 22:11

Interesting observation, @damnthatanxiety

Whiskeylover45 · 01/03/2020 23:17

From my point of view, 23 people out of 66 million have it. That should put it into perspective. If you are a single parent, no support, have to work full time with a limited amount of sic k pay then how are you going to do it? If you are like us, in a small two bedroom flat, as a single parent with no support, who are you going to turn to? DH as the main earner has to have a sick note after two days leave. How is he going to do that? He cant go to the GP, and I cant see any GP doing a home visit for someone who is Self isolating with no symptoms. The media needs to stop creating this hysteria, and use its influence to calm things down. Until it does I cant get excited about a fraction of the population getting a virus that, while it's a new strain, has been around for years

Whiskeylover45 · 01/03/2020 23:24

And yes, receiving two weeks out of four pay that affected your ability to give your child food, basic needs and a roof over their heads is something most would consider. Especially if they didnt have a five bedroom house they could self isolate with with full pay being delivered. In the later circumstances I would, in the former no. Kids need to eat, and being in debt doeant add to their financial security whi h affecta the overall wellbeing. If the government want this to happen, they need to increase funding towards a cure, and give substitutes to people who wouldnt otherwise get it to cover costs. They cant have ut both ways

catspyjamas123 · 01/03/2020 23:30

There are nearly 8,000 more seriously ill in China - so a lot more deaths on the way. And it’s still spreading. That’s why there’s the panic. It’s not just the flu. I would self isolate. I don’t want to kill someone because I couldn’t be bothered to follow the rules.

lyralalala · 01/03/2020 23:51

Agreed. They shouldn't need to though, employers should do the right thing. But we already know from the likes of Wetherspoons that they won't.

BIL works for a large energy company and they've announced that anyone who needs to self-isolate won't be paid under any circumstances. They'll only be paying sick pay on production of a sick line from a GP confirming the virus.

So it's going to spread round there as a lot of people won't be able to afford to be cautious

lyralalala · 01/03/2020 23:52

They've also said they won't be changing the annual leave policy - someone asked if last minute leave could be taken if you had to isolate so you could at least be paid and they said no. Again not under any circumstances, even when asked "what if someone in my house gets it"

Big companies are not helping

HeIenaDove · 02/03/2020 00:53

@lyra i wish i could say im surprised but im not.

Disgusted? Yes.

ActualHornist · 02/03/2020 00:57

I would but it would be impossible to keep myself in a room away from others. I could still work.

DressingGownofDoom · 02/03/2020 01:04

I'm not sure how I would manage to spend 2 weeks in the same house as toddler DS but not see or touch him. There are days he has a screaming fit if I try to go to the loo by myself Confused

Grandmi · 02/03/2020 01:06

If everyone had a job where they did get full sick leave ..all fine. I work for a company that only pay SSP ..about £100 per week !! There is absolutely no way that my colleagues would survive financially..they would end up homeless!!

MelanieFrontage · 02/03/2020 01:46

This thread has really opened my eyes to self isolation and how it can be nigh on impossible for some people. I’m now thinking of what I can do personally to try to help that.

Thankfully both myself and DH work from home and we are preppers, well I am.
No hot food deliveries here, only the big supermarkets.

If we do have to self isolate then the dogs will be pissed off but so what.

Being a prepper though it had never occurred to me to be organised over the propane gas (we don’t have mains gas) and last weekend we ran out. Thankfully we got 2 x 47kg bottles delivered last week but it did make me realise that the thI gas that you take for granted are the ones that will catch you out.

MelanieFrontage · 02/03/2020 01:47

That should have read the things that you take for granted will catch you out.

Aridane · 02/03/2020 01:52

@lyralalala

the big company I work for has been nothing but supportive- financially, in practical terms and solidity of approach - to our staff in China, Hong King and South Korea

auslass · 02/03/2020 01:55

Funny how we have a virus and all of a sudden the government freaks out and decides to start listening to scientists, but wouldn't do the same for climate change.

I guess the virus might kill a disproportionate amount of their voter base in an election cycle.

SirChing · 02/03/2020 02:01

Wow, this thread is depressingly revealing. Going without money for two weeks would be a nightmare and I would get into debt. But, funnily enough, I place the value of someone else's life as somewhat higher than two weeks wages. And certainly higher than a "telling off" from an employer.

Then again, I shouldn't be surprised. People are going on holiday to the Far East because they can't get their money back via insurance and can't bear to waste a few thousand. So they are literally valuing their own lives as less important than the price of their holiday.

What the fuck happened to people in this country?

HeIenaDove · 02/03/2020 02:08

Yeah cos a low pay worker going without wages and being unable to pay rent is totally comparable to a jolly to the Far East.

retro Twitter hashtag #checkyourprivilege seems appropriate here.

MelanieFrontage · 02/03/2020 02:10

Whilst I am prepared for a period of isolation what does worry me is that DH is in the midst of being diagnosed for an ongoing problem and only last week was referred for an emergency colonoscopy and endoscopy which is now booked for next Monday.

What if he can’t get to that appointment and he does have cancer which is all I can think about right now in terms of diagnosis. If we have to isolate and he misses his appointments what impact will that have on him?

MelanieFrontage · 02/03/2020 02:12

I realise that I come across as incredibly selfish in my last post but I can’t help that, I’m worried about DH and what this may mean to his treatment, whatever the cause.

SirChing · 02/03/2020 02:17

Yeah cos a low pay worker going without wages and being unable to pay rent is totally comparable to a jolly to the Far East

Nope two separate points which you have conflated into one. Very low paid disabled person here who couldn't pay the rent without two weeks wages. I just happen to think that rent arrears or losing my property isn't comparable to someone else losing their life #stickyourprivilegeup
