Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

advises over 60s to avoid crowds but forgets that most of us, having been forced to work until we're 66, have no choice but to continue going out to work...!

I don't think not getting paid is a good reason to be honest peoples health and well being is more important than money

What are the wellbeing of those who will not have any money to pay for food, mortgage, bills, medicines, etc due to their work place refusing to pay them?

As said previously, I would self isolate if the FOC and Public Health told me I needed to. I wouldn't self isolate if it went against the Government advice - to start with I would be in breach of my work contract if I just didn't show up! Fortunately we are in a position to have money which would buffer loss of earnings if it came to that (though because one of us is a high earner, obviously if they went paid for a fortnight it would be a large sum of money not being received, and actually that money is needed to pay for outgoings too, so it still wouldn't be an easy thing.) Fortunately both of our jobs would probably pay if we self isolated, and dh could definitely work from home for much of it, if not all. We are the lucky ones when it comes to this rule.

If the Government want to ensure people follow the self isolation guidelines they need to ensure people will get paid - and not just minimum sick pay either, but their proper wage.

I would self isolate as well. I would expect my partner to do the same. It's not for the isolating person's sake its for people who are vulnerable to illness. The same way a flu jab serves more than just you, it prevents you from passing it to pregnant and elderly people who could really suffer.

MaryHerbert · 01/03/2020 19:15

Yes for anyone on a key meter self isolating would mean no utilities, which isn't realistic.

In that situation surely you speak to your utilities company ASAP. They might well have contingency plans in place, but they can't help you if they don't know there's a problem.

BTW did anyone else see the story in The New York Times abut the American family who were brought back from Wuhan, forced by law into quarantine in hospital for two weeks, and then sent a bill for the medical care? Story said government backed down on hospital costs but family still being billed for ambulance transfer to hospital, various tests and X-rays, etc. So glad we're not living there!

Sunshine1239

It’s only Iran and specific areas of China were people are asked to self isolate without symptoms

And also 11 towns in Italy. I posted the full list earlier.

Darbs76 · 01/03/2020 19:19

1000%. Not to do so is selfish and stupid. No excuses. This is going to spiral out of control because so many are refusing to follow guidance

Darbs76 · 01/03/2020 19:19

It’s Italy too you need to self isolate. We had to tell a member of staff to work at home for 2wks.

Sunshine1239 · 01/03/2020 19:21

Government website today says Italy only if symptomatic

Would you self isolate?
Aragog · 01/03/2020 19:25

So, you have to self isolate for 14 days even without symptoms if you've been to:

China - Hubei province

Iran

Northern Italy lockdown towns

  • Bertonico
  • Terranova dei Passerini
  • Castiglione d’Adda
  • Casalpusterlengo
  • Castelgerundo
  • Somaglia, Codogno
  • Fombio
  • Maleo
  • Vo’ Eugane
  • San Fiorano

South Korea special care zones

  • Daegu
  • Cheongdo
Aragog · 01/03/2020 19:26

Sunshine - look at the second bullet point of your list

Aragog · 01/03/2020 19:27

Darbs - its only specific lock down cities in Italy. The rest of Northern Italy is only if you have symptoms.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 19:27

@helenadove That advice for over 60s to avoid crowds is laughably naive.

I'm just shocked that so many people consider their personal convenience more important than other people health and life.

Then self isolate yourselves, if you feel strongly then for your own health stay home

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 19:29

In that situation surely you speak to your utilities company ASAP. They might well have contingency plans in place, but they can't help you if they don't know there's a problem.

Haahaa! Have you ever been on a meter? They are for people who low credit and/or often found in rented accommodation. At a max you might get £20 worth of credit, that won't last long because meters are more expensive. They are punitive. It costs money to convert from them, too, and your LL might not allow it. But I'm sure if people ring them up and ask for their 'contingency plans' for coronavirus at least the call centre employee will get a laugh.

When I had a key electricity meter the top up machine broke in the only shop local to me. I rang up and assumed my energy provider could remotely add a balance onto my account. They told me they had no way of doing this and couldn't help me. The machine was broken for weeks and I had to get a friend to drive me into town to top up.

HeIenaDove · 01/03/2020 19:40

If people lose electric that wont help hygiene wise will it

janemaster · 01/03/2020 19:45

No one is going to self isolate at home with no electric or gas and small children.

OP posts:
Jem2510 · 01/03/2020 20:03

I would, yes. I refuse to let it take over my life, but I’d have to if that’s what was advised

HeIenaDove · 01/03/2020 20:20

Bullshit

HeIenaDove · 01/03/2020 20:40

I meant bullshit NO ONE would self isolate with no electric.

redbananas · 01/03/2020 20:46

I think for a lot of people self isolation would be difficult if not impossible. I would want to to protect everyone else, but I have a very sick partner, for whom I am a carer and children for whom I am the only functional parent. We also have paid carers in our home several times a day, so I can't see how on earth it would be possible.

If the government really cared about halting the spread of the virus they'd be offering quarantine compensation or rushing through legislation mandating sick pay in these circumstances

Agreed. They shouldn't need to though, employers should do the right thing. But we already know from the likes of Wetherspoons that they won't.
