To think people may have already had coronavirus?

I had pneumonia recently, pretty severe, hospitalised. Everyone I've told has said, 'it's weird how many people have said they've had pneumonia in the last month or two.' Yes I know it's the season for these things but it's a bit unusual that so many young and fit people have had pneumonia.

Just out of interest, has anyone you know had pneumonia in the last month or so (in the UK)?

I'd expect doctors to want to know at least if it's bacterial or viral pneumonia.
The type of treatment may depend on the virus as well. With SARS, from what I've read, the best treatment then was to reduce the immune response.
So, as far as possible, they will want to know the cause.

I had a really severe 'flu' at the end of Nov where I couldn't move and was bedbound for 2 days. I've never been so ill. DH had to come home from work to pick DC up from school as I couldn't even take more than a few steps to get into a cab. I remember having a very high temperature in that time but at the same time feeling freezing cold. I also had laboured breathing and a sore throat. My chesty cough lingered for weeks afterwards. What was strange is that a friend of my sibling who I don't know but who lives near me had the same symptoms around the same time.

I think I may of commented on this thread already but can't find my post.

I'm convinced it has been here longer than originally thought

OH's factory went down with a horrific bug just after Christmas. Almost all his maintenance team were off many confined to bed for over a week. OH had the most awful cough. When he returned to work he found three people had pneumonia.

It's not a coincidence they have a factory in China with people travelling between

When I had it I remember the antibiotics the doctor gave me didn't particularly help whereas usually when you have antibiotics by day 2-3 you feel like you're getting better.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/03/2020 11:58

I wonder if PHE are sampling randomly as well as testing people who are displaying COVID type symptoms and/or have come into direct contact with someone who is confirmed to have it?

I still reckon it could be flying well beneath the radar with many in the population already infected. How would you know?

BusterMove · 03/03/2020 12:09

NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes, they are: uk.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-britain/uk-conducts-random-coronavirus-testing-as-part-of-early-warning-plan-idUKKCN20K1G1

They tested someone in Essex with no travel history or known contact exposure, which turned out to be positive. So it's likely that there is local transmission, probably more than anybody knows.

GloriaMumsnet · 03/03/2020 12:10

Hi there, we've moved this over to the new coronavirus section.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/03/2020 12:11

Thanks, @BusterMove.

My DS had pneumonia hi December and was off school for all of December with it. I did find it odd at the time as I didn't think it was common. That said I spent a month caring for him at close quarters and didn't get ill, nor did anyone else, so I would say that it was proper pneumonia (which I understand isn't as contagious)

McFatticus · 03/03/2020 13:56

Dad had pneumonia in hospital for 2 weeks. Antibiotics weren't working which hospital said was surprising. Then mum was very ill with respiratory problems for about 3 weeks. BF's fit healthy DS20 in hospital with pneumonia came out a few weeks ago, he's now very unwell again with respiratory problems.

I've also heard from others about relatives and friends with pneumonia.

IceWings · 03/03/2020 14:39

I’ve had an odd virus that started with a cough then progressed to feeling extremely poorly with confusion, fever and an unbelievably sore throat. I had none of the normal flu symptoms such as headache, runny nose etc. I’m still unwell and coughing a fortnight later. DC has had a much milder version of the same thing. NHS 111 wasn’t interested because I haven’t travelled out of the country.

Mittens030869 · 03/03/2020 15:19

I've had a high temperature for 12 days now, plus bad cough, as well as intermittent cold symptoms with sneezing. It's similar to what happened last year, when it was diagnosed as pneumonia.

I'm very prone to bad viral illnesses and I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But this one really is getting worse rather than better.

They wouldn't test me for COVID-19 because I don't fit their strict criteria for testing.

gladysinthepicture · 03/03/2020 15:24

I reckon if everyone in the uk were to be tested, the results would be be widespread positives. The actual cases we see reported are only the people actually being tested! I also think the govenment know this and hope we as public just don`t "see it"! Becasue its cold/ flu time of year many cases are being blamed as funny cold type illness. As the symptoms do seem to be similar to a point.

Canshopwillshop · 03/03/2020 15:40

I agree OP. My neighbour and a couple of friends had a weird flu type virus over Xmas with really bad coughs and sore throats. Even before the news about Coronavirus surfaced we were talking about how strange this particular virus was as it didn’t follow normal flu type pattern with snotty nose etc. Each person said they’d not had anything like it before.

NemophilistRebel · 03/03/2020 15:42

I also feel like there should be way more positive tests if they tested everyone

However, they have tested thousands so far and to have only 50 confirmed is very positive and doesn’t match up with it having been out of control for long

Mittens030869 · 03/03/2020 15:42

I have never had an illness where the temperature has got worse as time has gone on either. When I had pneumonia, I started off with a high temperature of 39.5, which then settled for 38 or thereabouts. This time, the temperature is getting worse, which is unnerving to say the least.

aliasname · 03/03/2020 19:39

I've had a tight chest since last Thursday. No travel or contacts, so 111 not interested.

The odd thing is I never usually have any chest problems. I've loads of health issues, but they're all the lower half of my body ~ everything between my knees and my navel has been falling apart for years. But the top half is usually sound as a bell.

I've never had pneumonia or bronchitis or any kind of chest infection. Never had asthma. Never even had flu. So this just feels... strange. Slight cough. No fever ~ well, I was hot 1 night last week, but assumed that was menopausal.

Not struggling to breath, but its uncomfortable. If I had a pre-existing condition I imagine it could become serious. And of course without a diagnosis I'm going around spreading whatever it is. Luckily I'm not a very social person.

Dh has a really nasty flu thing but had the flu vaccine worrying

Sounds like what I had. Really feverish but no snotty nose, just the most awful cough. It took me weeks to feel better. I'm convinced it was coronavirus...my dh thinks I'm mad.

Mittens030869 · 03/03/2020 20:44

@formerbabe That's what I'm going through right now. It's encouraging to know that you have recovered! I'm getting worse rather than better right now. I had pneumonia last year after going down with a bad bout of flu, and I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, so I am quite vulnerable.

FthisS · 03/03/2020 20:44

I'm day 8 of being unwell and if anything I feel I'm getting worse. It started as a hacking dry cough and it just isn't stopping it's like a bark, headaches and sore throat plus just feeling generally weak. I never get unwell. I actually always tell people that I haven't had a cold since I had my tonsils removed when I was 13. I seriously never get a cold even.

Mittens030869 · 03/03/2020 20:45

Me too, I had the jab because of having had pneumonia last year. I hope your DH gets better soon. Thanks

Lweji · 03/03/2020 20:46

I had a horrible cough and fever a few years ago. Nothing like I ever had. Pretty sure it wasn't Covid-19.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/03/2020 21:17

I had a horrible cough and fever a few years ago. Was that at the beginning of 2018? I had a cough I just couldn't shake off and I'm not a 'chesty' type (ears were always my weakness as a child).
