To think people may have already had coronavirus?

I had pneumonia recently, pretty severe, hospitalised. Everyone I've told has said, 'it's weird how many people have said they've had pneumonia in the last month or two.' Yes I know it's the season for these things but it's a bit unusual that so many young and fit people have had pneumonia.

Just out of interest, has anyone you know had pneumonia in the last month or so (in the UK)?

Earlier

I’d be curious to know if you’ve had it once are you now immune, as is often the case.

Because if lots do have it, or had it and are now over it, then any escalation is likely to not be as bad as predicted.

butwhateverfor · 04/03/2020 03:18

I thought this...DC 3 had a mild case. DH got it despite having the flu vac, and I got pneumonia. All of us had 2 rounds of antibiotics.

SpeedofaSloth · 04/03/2020 03:23

The Guardian is reporting that ITU patients are now to be swabbed, I guess to check this out. It seems plausible to me.

HRH2020 · 04/03/2020 05:05

I remember Australia reporting they had a particularly bad flu this year, I think it was that rather than Covid19 people have had.

I had 2 rounds of antibiotics las year when I had pneumonia, the second time round with 2 different ones to take simultaneously. That did the trick.

But if yours responded to antibiotics like mine did, then it wasn't Covid-19, as that's a virus and viruses don't respond to antibiotics.

2 days before Xmas I had a temperature and felt exhausted - I just needed to sleep - I could barely move - all I remember is a sore throat and temp - I never got a runny nose. However I had a bad chest and a cough that got progressively worse. I ended up on antibiotics for a chest infection.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/03/2020 07:21

Bluntess apparently some people have had it twice, there was something on BBC news earlier about a woman getting it twice, for example

Skyejuly · 04/03/2020 07:25

Almost certainly not Corona in my case but me and my friend have been Ill with cough and cold since rome. I just cant shift it.

Thats an interesting point, as a Japanese Dr was on the TV yesterday saying that Japan has very low testing rates but he is convinced Japan has 10s of 1000s of cases.
Equally hard to believe China has had only 90k cases!

I think the case of the woman who was initially thought to have caught CV twice was explained by poor testing, giving her a false negative in the first instance.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/03/2020 07:58

I think if many people have, but are not counted in the official numbers, then that might bring the mortality rates down.

But I’m bad with statistics and percentages.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/03/2020 07:59

But I’m certainly not under the illusion that the bug we had around Christmas time was COvID.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/03/2020 09:11

Does having it give you immunity though? I thought people can catch it twice, maybe that is rare though

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 04/03/2020 09:13

I thought people can catch it twice

Yes, some people can. A friend of mine has had chickenpox five times. Not everyone's immune system works quite the same way. I think catching it twice isn't something to be concerned about.

buttonmoonb4tea · 04/03/2020 09:16

My Pre-teen nephew was admitted to hospital between Christmas and new year with pneumonia.

Has started with similar symptoms over the last couple of days, high temp, fever, headaches.

So strange! I've heard of others being hospitalised with pneumonia recently too.

I think covid 19 has been around longer than we think.

Lweji · 04/03/2020 09:21

I think covid 19 has been around longer than we think.

This is the typical set of beliefs that is based on zero actual scientific evidence.
How do you think you know more than the people who track and survey circulating viruses?
What do you know about the different viruses to allow you to make such a statement?

Porcupineinwaiting · 04/03/2020 09:30

@Lweji well said! Bet those scientists in China who have been researching the origins of this virus wish they'd saved their time and just consulted the Mumsnet collective instead.

QuimReaper · 04/03/2020 09:41

This is an interesting theory - my mother in law has been absolutely wiped out with what she's described as a chest infection for over a month.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/03/2020 09:42

I have just been reading more on the cases where it seems the person had it twice, it seems virologists think it is possible the illness was a continuation and still present in the person rather than a seperate new case of the virus. It makes you think of other things like chickenpox and shingles for example. I was told shingles doesn't come back but it did with me. The GP said it was unusual and might have been due to being run down / low immunity.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 04/03/2020 10:12

Someone on another board said the couple from the cruise ship had tested positive again after being given all clear. Said its on his vlog but I can’t find it. David Abel his name is.

That's what I've heard too. Not at all surprising, seeing as flu can be caught over and over again.
It's all too new to really know what to expect from the Covid19 virus, however.

ANuggetOfTheFinestGreen · 04/03/2020 11:50

Apparently I had Swine Flu but didn't know it. My partner was really ill with it in 2009 and as far as I was aware I escaped catching it. However, I had bloods done when I was pregnant in 2010 and the booking in midwife mentioned in passing that I had something in my test results that indicated I'd had it. Must have had it so mildly or without symptoms?

Echobelly · 04/03/2020 12:07

Interesting, I did have two otherwise fit and healthy friends have pneumonia late last year at around the same time (no connection to one another)

DressingGownofDoom · 04/03/2020 12:13

I had bronchitis last month as did my DH. It's very common for these things to do the rounds over winter.
