AIBU to cancel holiday?

Nostrings457 · 29/02/2020 07:59

Booked to go to Malta in May - holiday balance is due tomorrow (over 6k). Travelling with young children and 1 aduly is aged 65+

Malta has no coronavirus cases currently but who knows what will happen between now and May. I dont want to pay the balance and then risk trying to claim off insurance if we dont go.

I suppose its more a what would you do than aibu?

(I know the risk is so low, influenza kills more people etc.. but i dont want to end up in quarantine with 3 young kids somewhere either)

I would cancel - £6k for Malta in May is an astronomical rip off. It's worth £2k at best.

timeforawine · 29/02/2020 09:49

I'm not cancelling my May holiday

StrawberryFizz26 · 29/02/2020 09:53

We're due to go Milan in the middle of March & we're unsure on what to do.
It's more about the self isolation when we get back. DP doesn't want to not see his lo when he gets back.
Currently getting into easyJet e-chat to see what they need

StrawberryFizz26 · 29/02/2020 09:53

**recommend, not need!

Hangingwithmygnomies · 29/02/2020 09:54

For those who have package holidays booked please check out the Package Travel Regulation. If the FCO advise against all but essential travel to that country/area it is the travel company that refund you, depending on how long/when the restriction is in place and when you are due to travel. I myself work in the travel industry and it is an ever changing situation. I have a holiday booked for Mallorca for June including my children and 3 older adults with existing health conditions, one of which has a lung condition. Currently we still plan to go put will keep an eye on the situation and make a decision nearer the time.

Davincitoad · 29/02/2020 09:56

Weve got Rome booked for May half term. Can’t decide whether to just lose deposit or pay and hope covered by a do not travel announcement.

EasterIssland · 29/02/2020 09:57

@Chattylass how is it possible Florida to have 150 if USA has got 66?

I’ve got a holiday booked to northern Italy. Cancelled as it’s in a months time and with a toddler which would result in quarantine as he normally has fever

I’ve another one booked for Japan later in the year not cancelling it

TheLowry · 29/02/2020 09:59

I'd cancel. Holiday prices will probably crash as people stay at home -so you may even end up saving money if you rebook later.

Bodear · 29/02/2020 10:00

@madroid 20% is 1 in 5. So the stats you gave mean that everyone who needs medical support will need respiratory support? That sounds extremely unlikely. Could you share your sources for these figures?

WhereverIMayRoam · 29/02/2020 10:03

Tbh I’d probably cancel because it’s a developing situation and 6k is a lot of money to potentially lose. Yes, it may be the case that the travel company “have” to refund you in the event the FCO say no travel but some companies will go bust as a result of what’s happening so will everyone be refunded in full?

Unless you could afford to take the possible hit then frankly I’d cancel now, see how things are in a few months and potentially get a holiday for the same price or less as travel companies look to fill all the places that so many holiday makers will have cancelled or held off booking in the first place.

Obviouspretzel · 29/02/2020 10:11

Why are people laying into the OP for the cost of the holiday? For god's sake. I'm sure there are different places in Malta, varying in quality and price, just as there are everywhere.

It's like saying, you paid £50 for a bottle of single malt? You were robbed, Bells is a tenner.

Yeah I dont get this either. If she wants to spend 6k on a holiday to Malta, thats her business. Other people probably spend cash on stuff the OP thinks is a waste. We all value different things in life. I dont get people spending money on football tickets and stuff yet I like designer bags. Hardly shocking we are all different lol

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 29/02/2020 10:14

You are not necessarily minimising your risk by remaining in the UK, we have 20 cases including one where there person was infected in the UK without having been abroad.

crosspelican · 29/02/2020 10:14

I'm agog to learn more about what 6k gets you in Malta - must be a stunning holiday!

I would crack on though. Check the small print before you hand over the money - make sure that you get 100% back if there is a travel ban on flights to/from Malta at the time of your trip and that a pandemic isn't somehow excluded. TRIPLE check.

One of my children just did a Milan flight and he said the tourist attractions were empty.

My friend who lives about half an hour away from the airport had said that apart from where towns are under quarantine life goes on as normal.

I was going to Milan and Rome with my grandchildren but I’ve cancelled the trip based on possible quarantine when coming back. I don’t want them missing a fortnight of school and Italy will still be there a few months from now so we can go then.

A neighbouring country to where I am has just stopped citizens from another 5 or 6 neighbouring countries from entering on their ID cards. They now must use their passports so a paper trail of where they’ve recently been is available. Some of my children are currently in that country and asked for their passports to be couriered to them but they’ve now been told they can travel home on their ID cards. Things can change very quickly in situations like what we have now I’m happy to stay put till I can be sure of getting home when I want to come home.

StrawberryFizz26 · 29/02/2020 10:30

*nanamilly we're going to leave it till Thursday up till when we can get a full refund on the accommodation and if we decide not to go, change the flight to later in the year. It'll cost about £250 but better to be safe than sorry I guess.

kateandme · 29/02/2020 10:37

i think id cancel.i could lose that much.
its not just about the destination either.its getting to that destination.who has been at all the services.who has been touching what coming through the airport.
especially if you have to be careful with the immune sepressed i think you just need to do all you can.
our online delivery man now has to carry a sanitary gel.this is getting serious.

kateandme · 29/02/2020 10:37

couldnt*

comictern · 29/02/2020 10:45

Quick question to those saying that it's the holiday company that pay out if FCO advice says not to travel. I've got a trip booked with Airbnb accommodation and Easyjet flights booked direct. We have travel insurance, but no travel agent involved. Anyone know who would be responsible for covering that if we had to cancel through FCO advice, or would we just lose the money?

Lockheart · 29/02/2020 10:47

I'm booking a holiday to Malta today. We leave in less than a month. I'm no more worried than I'm worried about picking up a cold or the flu - which did in fact ruin my last holiday.

Lweji · 29/02/2020 10:49

YANBU
It's highly possible you'd be the one carrying COVID-19 to Malta from the UK and they certainly don't need that.

Lweji · 29/02/2020 10:50

Not to mention you infecting everyone in the airplane.

BridgeToTerabithia · 29/02/2020 10:50

DC school is due to gi to France and Germany in two weeks. We have no idea if they will cancel.or go ahead. There is an immunocompromised child in the school we have been getting emails about so it seems crazy to go and highly likely if it gets worse that they go then cannot attend school! I do not know whether to pull out of the trip or not.

lovelyupnorth · 29/02/2020 10:51

@GetOffYourHighHorse

Maybe if they did. It’s all a panic about bugger all.

Delicatelyscentedflavour · 29/02/2020 10:52

The plane is like a flying test tube. I’d feel better at home. The virus itself is mostly mild but it depends on your luck. For some reason children appear less susceptible. At this stage it is all conjecture and guesses based on similar strains. Nobody knows definitively and are erring on the side of caution. Social media, tv and papers are to be avoided at all costs. Then avoid the virus.

It’s not exactly a simple choice is it.

I would take the financial hit personally. A huge number of claims could break the system. Extenuating circumstances being the get out clause as airlines start going bust. I don’t fancy being stranded abroad during this.
