AIBU to cancel holiday?

Nostrings457 · 29/02/2020 07:59

Booked to go to Malta in May - holiday balance is due tomorrow (over 6k). Travelling with young children and 1 aduly is aged 65+

Malta has no coronavirus cases currently but who knows what will happen between now and May. I dont want to pay the balance and then risk trying to claim off insurance if we dont go.

I suppose its more a what would you do than aibu?

(I know the risk is so low, influenza kills more people etc.. but i dont want to end up in quarantine with 3 young kids somewhere either)

Of course they are, that’s part of the risk analysis.

lilgreen · 06/03/2020 19:41

No real statement from him though. Why isn’t he out in front of no 10 speaking to the country? All I’ve see is little snippets.

Alsohuman · 06/03/2020 19:43

Why isn’t he out in front of no 10 speaking to the country?

Because there’s no reason for him to and it would add to the hysteria the media’s whipping up. The sooner everyone calms the fuck down, the better off we’ll be.

MarkingTimeIm59 · 06/03/2020 19:49

I’m due to travel on 1 April. Travel insurance (including travel disruption) all in place as far as I can make out. I Will travel - unless the airline/government say otherwise - but feeling very, very uneasy.

Strictly1972 · 06/03/2020 19:49

@lilgreen I absolutely agree about the FCO being politically & financial driven above anything else. We are currently debating delaying our hol by 12 months as it’s an expensive trip to the US & i can’t imagine they would ever say not to travel there no matter how bad it gets. We can begrudgingly afford to lose the deposit we have paid but we are nervous about spending thousands on a trip & not being able to do as much as we want over there as it’s not a destination we are likely to visit again for many years.

lilgreen · 06/03/2020 19:53

Don’t appreciate being told to calm the fuck down Hmm as I’m not hysterical. I’m trying to make a sensible decision. I have a girl in my class with CF and staff members over 60. We need to look after everyone not just ourselves.

lilgreen · 06/03/2020 19:54

I have been reassuring children all week but then hear experts and doctors saying this is very worrying indeed. I don’t read tabloids.

Alsohuman · 06/03/2020 19:56

Don’t appreciate being told to calm the fuck down

You weren’t told, it’s a generalisation.

coconuttelegraph · 06/03/2020 20:02

If I choose not to travel, I will lose £5k+
I can’t afford to lose this

If you can't afford to lose it how can you afford to pay if you do go Confused?

I would go unless travel to NZ is banned, you know what precautions to take

lilgreen · 06/03/2020 20:02

Still do appreciate it. Just because people feel scared doesn’t mean they need patronising.

lilgreen · 06/03/2020 20:03

Don’t

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 20:04

You haven't lost £5k. That money is gone already. You've lost the trip. So your choice is the trip or the risk - both for yourself and for others

MarkingTimeIm59 · 06/03/2020 20:07

When I booked, the virus wasn’t in the news.
I can afford to travel if I do go. I’ve been saving and budgeting for ages.
I don’t want to throw away £5k if I don’t.

Alsohuman · 06/03/2020 20:08

Just go.

MarkingTimeIm59 · 06/03/2020 20:08

I’m allowed to be scared.

MarkingTimeIm59 · 06/03/2020 20:09

If allowed, I’ll go.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 20:10

Its perfectly logical to be scared.

MarkingTimeIm59 · 06/03/2020 20:12

Thank you

Alsohuman · 06/03/2020 20:13

Its perfectly logical to be scared

Is it? It seems completely illogical to me, having looked past the media spin and listened to Chris Whitty who knows far more about it than they do.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 20:19

Well the official death rate from the WHO is 3.4. That means 1 in 30 people who get it will die. Its not great odds tbh and so yes the logical response is to be scared.

Alsohuman · 06/03/2020 21:11

A mortality rate which ranges from zero for under tens all the way up to 15% for over 80s. Unless you’re over 60, there’s no logical reason to be scared. I’m nearer 70 than 60 and manage not to be remotely scared. Probably because my generation is much more resilient.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 06/03/2020 21:28

We have a holiday booked for Turkey in June and unless foreign office travel advice says not to then we will go.

We already have a confirmed case in our local area and fully expect to sadly see this figure rise.

Apparently Turkey have no confirmed cases at the moment but I am very sceptical about that. Does anyone know if Turkey is testing for Coronavirus ?

WorriedAboutMom · 07/03/2020 00:05

Sunburst I have a holiday to Turkey coming up too but I figure better to go now then later, when the number of cases start going up. I have read of them testing on the internet, I'll just have to take their word on it. I'll just be staying in the hotel though and will avoid excursions and market trips.
I am actually more worried about going through the airports as I read today that two baggage handlers at Heathrow tested positive for the virus.

crazydiamond222 · 07/03/2020 00:13

'I’m nearer 70 than 60 and manage not to be remotely scared. Probably because my generation is much more resilient'

Possibly or possibly you are not scared becuase of the reduction in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in the brain in older people which is linked to a positivity bias which has been shown to impair decision making Wink

@Alsohuman you're the only one losing your head here and being rude to people.
