To think that we must stop stressing about coronavirus

Because stress and panic risk causing more deaths in and of themselves.

I know the WHO is still labeling this containment phase but it is quite clear that the virus transmission is very close to being out of control. It will then spread everywhere because it spreads easily, there isn't much you can do to avoid catching it and people can be asymptomatic, have few symptoms or take up to a month to show symptoms.

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later.

Prepers, sorry, but unless you can stay away from other human beings for a few months until a vaccine is developed and produced in adequate numbers so that you can get one, you are also getting it.

And yes, my DS who is 5yo is asthmatic, I have elderly relatives and a friend who is immunosuppressed. But stressing and panicking will not help them either.

We all need to keep calm. Stop raiding the supermarkets, stop freaking out and depressing the economy and we need to make sure that scarce medical resources are kept free and accessible for those who will genuinely need help because of the virus.

That is the only helpful and effective thing we can do.

I think you’re right that we’ll all get it sooner or later. I’m prepping for this eventuality, raiding the supermarket for long life “poorly food” eg rice pudding, juice. Vitamins, lemsips, cough medicine, tissues.
It’s not panicking, it’s being prepared and it will all get used- we always have colds every now and again and tissues don’t go off!

Humina · 28/02/2020 14:41

It's not 'raiding' if you stock up whilst supermarkets are able to cope with a change in buying habits. Hmm

faracrossthepond · 28/02/2020 14:41

YANBU. I am so sick of seeing threads about it on here actually, that I am instantly hiding the threads when I see them.

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 28/02/2020 14:41

I don't know anyone that is 'stressing' about Coronavirus. But I also think that if it was as minimal a risk as some are saying, cities and towns would not be getting shut down.

So there needs to be a realistic level of risk awareness, and preparing for that now makes much more sense than trying to deal with it once it it hits your local area.

I'm not sure how people are simultaneously raiding the supermarkets and depressing the economy. That makes no sense at all.

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 14:41

I’m just getting tired of hearing about it now and looking forward to it fading away as all of the hysterical ‘pandemics’ inevitably do. I remember swine and bird flu being the same, also remember mad cows disease. I’m just not worried about it at all.

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 14:42

YANBU. I am so sick of seeing threads about it on here actually, that I am instantly hiding the threads when I see them.

Same here, have hidden at least ten.

Cornettoninja · 28/02/2020 14:42

Stop raiding the supermarkets, stop freaking out and depressing the economy

I haven’t seen any of this irl Confused

I agree with the sentiment though, it’s almost inevitable that a large percentage of us are going to get Coronavirus. I think it’s only right to take sensible precautions but ultimately there is only so much we can control a virus.

Humina · 28/02/2020 14:43

Also, I was in a supermarket this morning and it was business as usual.

onalongsabbatical · 28/02/2020 14:45

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later.
You sound stressed yourself!
I'm a prepper and I'm perfectly calm and feel quite prepared for whatever happens.
And when did telling people to calm down ever calm anyone down? Hmm

TheMammothHunters · 28/02/2020 14:46

I was at the supermarket too and it was business as usual. The lady in front of me in home bargains had 10 alcohol hand gels though!

tiredanddangerous · 28/02/2020 14:46

I don’t know anyone in real life who is stressing about Coronavirus. I think a high proportion of people on this site suffer from anxiety, and it’s very evident in all these threads!

ClubfootMaestro · 28/02/2020 14:47

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later

Oh but don’t stress.

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 14:55

We’re definitely not all going to get coronavirus in the same way we don’t all get the flu. I’ve had the flu once in my life when I was ten so years ago and I survived it.

opticaldelusion · 28/02/2020 14:57

There are currently 14 threads about coronavirus on the first page of AIBU alone. It gets mentioned by people I know IRL but not obsessively. MN is a weird hotbed of obsession about what is still very low risk.

Lycidas · 28/02/2020 15:05

Why shouldn’t people mention it when some of our travel plans, business arrangements, daily lives etc are being disrupted by it? :s

PlomBear · 28/02/2020 15:07

I keep hiding threads. The hysteria is mounting. In real life, people are going to work and acting normally. Anyway, worrying has never fixed anything.

NewYearNewTwatName · 28/02/2020 15:09

You are also adding to the million coronavirus threads already going. Why are you so anxious and stressed about other people talking about it, that you have to start another?

I've got plenty of food, and other provisions to last a while.

it's not that I won't leave the house, but I will be making fewer journeys out. I won't have to worry if/when everyone else are out stripping the shelves.

I will continue to go to work as it's not a job that can be put on hold.

I will only not be leaving the house if I or my family have to self quarantine, or the Gov asked people to stay in doors and to restrict movement of people.

I'm not stress, I'm not stressing.

I've just done what I can to make my life and my families easier incase of any disruption to our routine, health or other things things that might arise from a pandemic announcement.

The people out fighting over the last loaf of bread and buying shit tons in one go when it snows are not preppers, they are the panic buyers.

It pisses me off when people mix the two up.

lazylinguist · 28/02/2020 15:12

Because stress and panic risk causing more deaths in and of themselves.

How is worrying a bit about the virus and stocking up on some essentials going to kill people? Confused Ironically I think you are panicking about the supposed panic, OP.

pigsDOfly · 28/02/2020 15:13

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later.

The same was said of swine flu and bird flu. I didn't get either of those and knew no one personally, who did either.

And apparently a huge percentage of us were going to die from BSE and AIDS; again never knew anyone who was affected by either of them at the time; have since met people affected by AIDS.

I do think there is a tendence to over report, as well. In the news on radio 4 this morning they were reporting that the number of people testing positive in the UK had risen to 19. Does every new case have to be reported? I'm not sure how helpful that is in terms of helping the general population not to panic.

I actually know only two people irl who are panicking about the coronavirus and they are married to each other.

steff13 · 28/02/2020 15:17

We're certainly not all going to get it.

My husband got swine flu, and was sick for two weeks. My kids and I lived with him day in and day out and none of us got so much as a sniffle.

YANBU. I am so sick of seeing threads about it on here actually, that I am instantly hiding the threads when I see them.

Threads like this one?

TheGirlFromStoryville · 28/02/2020 15:19

I'm panicking like crazy.
DH showed me a coronavirus advice page on Psych Central, an American mental health website, which helped calm me down a little.

I've prepped a fair bit, got another big shop getting delivered on Sunday, got all meds, handgels, masks etc. There's not much more I can do to protect my family and I.

The uncertainty and feeling of helplessness is hard to shake off though!

Sakura7 · 28/02/2020 15:19

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later

Just like everyone got the Spanish flu? And swine flu?

Obviously we're not all going to get it, but if we did it would absolutely be something to worry about as at least 3% of us would be killed by it.

IceColdCat · 28/02/2020 15:22

It depends what you mean about 'not stressing out'.

Did you see the thread this morning about the poster's boyfriend who is so unconcerned that he's planning to travel voluntarily to an infected area and not self quarantine when he returns? A little anxiety about the situation would be welcome if it stops him and others like him from making the situation worse!

Morgan12 · 28/02/2020 15:22

We are all getting it are we?
😂😂😂😂

Ffs, this is what will freak people out and make them raid the supermarkets!

Alsohuman · 28/02/2020 15:23

I’m old and, according to MN, I’m going to die if I get it. Do you know what? I don’t care. I’m a complete fatalist, if it’s written in my stars that I’m going to die of coronavirus in 2020, there’s bugger all I can do about it. The panic - which certainly doesn’t seem to exist among the people I know - is really pissing me off.
