To think that we must stop stressing about coronavirus

Because stress and panic risk causing more deaths in and of themselves.

I know the WHO is still labeling this containment phase but it is quite clear that the virus transmission is very close to being out of control. It will then spread everywhere because it spreads easily, there isn't much you can do to avoid catching it and people can be asymptomatic, have few symptoms or take up to a month to show symptoms.

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later.

Prepers, sorry, but unless you can stay away from other human beings for a few months until a vaccine is developed and produced in adequate numbers so that you can get one, you are also getting it.

And yes, my DS who is 5yo is asthmatic, I have elderly relatives and a friend who is immunosuppressed. But stressing and panicking will not help them either.

We all need to keep calm. Stop raiding the supermarkets, stop freaking out and depressing the economy and we need to make sure that scarce medical resources are kept free and accessible for those who will genuinely need help because of the virus.

That is the only helpful and effective thing we can do.

The same was said of swine flu and bird flu. I didn't get either of those and knew no one personally, who did either

I can’t remember whether it was swine or bird flu but the government temporarily increased the statutory sickness self-certification to 14 days instead of 7. I knew a lot of people off with flu that year Wink

Maybe I was a bit hasty agreeing with inevitability of Coronavirus, on reflection if it spread as aggressively as that the currently quarantined cruise ships would be reporting much higher rates of infection (could be wrong here). But this is an example of why we should be concerned but not panicking - we just don’t know enough about it.

NewYearNewTwatName My sentiments exactly! Thank you for not making feel alone

Melanie7788 · 28/02/2020 15:30

I agree. Of course, there is news about this virus everywhere, and it makes us think about it and worry. My DH told me that there is no reason to worry, because we don't think about the amount of people who die of flu, for example. If we deal with suh viruses, the death can be caused by complications, so the older people and children are at more risk.

auslass · 28/02/2020 15:35

Just to lighten the mood, if you have dogs you can now get doggy face masks!

so the older people and children are at more risk

The way some people talk on here it's like your life has no value if you're old or in some way immuno-compromised. The cheek of those people wanting to stay alive Hmm

Goawayquickly · 28/02/2020 15:37

We are not all going to get it.

I love people are commenting here that they’re hiding all Corona threads instantly, what after you’ve commented?

Supermarket normal today, plenty of stock but it’s prudent to have medicine and tissues in over winter and always handy to have a decent pantry, we have storms as well as the virus and regular colds about. Sensible precautions.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 15:38

Cure my MS and my dh's asthma and we'll be laughing along with you , op.

Waspnest · 28/02/2020 15:46

I don’t know anyone in real life who is stressing about Coronavirus. I think a high proportion of people on this site suffer from anxiety, and it’s very evident in all these threads!

I agree with this. I talk about it in RL with people but no-one is stressing about it. A friend who tends to be anxious about her health used a tissue to open a toilet door this morning but she wasn't concerned enough to cancel our coffee get together and we hardly mentioned it in conversation.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 28/02/2020 15:50

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later

Does everyone get influenza every year? I've only had it about 3 times in my life. Swine flu? I only know one person who got it...

Not everyone will get anything!

hazeyjane · 28/02/2020 15:51

Ironically, I have just started panicking a bit.

Figgygal · 28/02/2020 15:52

Agreed it’s ridiculous

pigsDOfly · 28/02/2020 15:53

@auslass I think my dog would refuse to leave the house if I put one of those things on her.

How would she be able to stick her nose in all the exciting smelly places? And if something got in the way of her hoovering up rabbit dropping whilst out on a walk, well it just wouldn't be a proper walk, would it.

Waspnest · 28/02/2020 15:55

Not everyone will get anything!

Well exactly. As I recall even during the Ebola outbreak some people were found to be immune and they donated blood to help scientists produce a vaccine.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 15:56

@DrinkSangriaInThePark , dd got flu this year. I didn't because the vaccine worked. I had norovirus two years in a row. I have MS so it was particularly dreadful.

adaline · 28/02/2020 15:56

To repeat, we are all getting this, sooner or later.

Don't be so ridiculous. Comments like this only encourages the hysteria that doesn't seem to exist at all in real life

PlomBear · 28/02/2020 15:57

It’s not as though people are running through the streets screaming with hysteria.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 28/02/2020 15:58

Yanbu. I remember being equally annoyed about the reporting on swine flu and the gazillion threads on Mumsnet about it.

But is Corona virus more dangerous than swine flu? I don't remember quarantines and UK schools closing then. I knew one person who got swine flu - a very unhealthy chain smoker and alcoholic. He survived.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 28/02/2020 15:59

@Melanie7788 is your husband a doctor or a scientist in a related subject?

bloodywhitecat · 28/02/2020 16:01

I'm not stressing about it nor is anyone I know (except for my adult DD but common colds often see her admitted to hospital with her asthma so in my mind she allowed to be a little more concerned).

PlomBear · 28/02/2020 16:03

On every post about someone being off work sick, loads of people always write “oh I’ve not had a day off sick in 30 years / I went to work miscarrying / with a broken limb / pneumonia / flu etc.

Just wondering if those same people are going to follow government advice and stay home with coronavirus?

Cornettoninja · 28/02/2020 16:04

Does everyone get influenza every year? I've only had it about 3 times in my life. Swine flu?

I really don’t think coronavirus is comparable to flu (why is flu the comparison that’s stuck?).

My (very layman’s interpretation) is that it’s more like measles in an unvaccinated population. No need to start painting red crosses on people’s front doors but worth maintaining a healthy respect around.

adaline · 28/02/2020 16:05

But there isn't currently any government advice telling people to stay at home with a bad cold, or a broken leg, or pneumonia, is there? If there was, and people ignored it, that would be different.

PlomBear · 28/02/2020 16:07

Colds, pneumonia and flu are contagious though. Some people on here see it as a badge of honour to struggle to work. Dunno why.

iheartislesofwight · 28/02/2020 16:10

i can't get worked up about this in any shape or form, i found that growing up with the threat on nuclear war as a child far more scary. i have chronic health condition but i still want to get on with life, i'm selfish as i won't wear a mask [not seen anyone wearing one in rl and i'm not prepping.
when zombies start running amok then everyone can say 'we told you so' but until then business as usual.
