There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

How are you all managing to get on with your day. I spent the whole day in today worrying and googling, just made myself feel rubbish so cant allow myself to do it again tomorrow. Are you all just getting on with day to day living and checking news less, just need to find ways of distracting myself.

Roussette · 02/03/2020 20:54

Keynote1 Someone somewhere said... just don't google, don't keep reading, but check out what's going on just once a day. Either first thing in the morning, or last thing at night.

(Personally first thing, sounds more sensible to me so you don't dwell on it when trying to sleep)

3luckystars · 02/03/2020 21:06

I've decided today that I'm cutting it off completely, if these are my last few weeks on earth, I'm not spending it freaking out. I'm going to enjoy my life and listen to music and watch comedies. I will still wash my hands, but im not listening to anything about it anymore.

madeyemoodysmum · 02/03/2020 21:43

My dd is being tested tomorrow. She came home from north Italy last week.

However she only has temp and headache no cough. She is eating and otherwise well and responding to paracetamol. No other kids that have been tested from her group have so far come back positive. In the ski area she was in they have had no cases.

But I felt I owed it to my family and friends and wider public to ring 111 and they are testing her.

I'm confident she will be fine especially after this thread and the stats.

Worryworker · 02/03/2020 22:08

I don’t feel particularly panicked. I remind myself that statistically the chances of me getting it is very low at the moment! We’re due to go to Lake Garda, Italy (via train, initially Eurostar to Paris for stop over first) end of May- I’m feeling hopeful we’ll be able to go or am I being unrealistic?

Roussette · 02/03/2020 22:13

Personally, I don't think you are being unrealistic. Italy have and are working very hard at keeping it contained.

Good luck with your DD madeyemoodysmum

Thank you so much for this thread. So pleased I found it. The other thread ive been following has had me sick with worry. Literally feeling anxious and panicky. This is helping alleviate it a bit .

Thymelord · 03/03/2020 09:53

This article may be helpful. I follow this man and am in his facebook group. He is very knowledgeable, very calm and focuses solely on facts and debunking 'fake news'. I don't know how to link so I will just paste it below, so people can copy it if they want to read. He is actively trying to get people to see that the media are reporting nothing but bad news, doomsday headlines that sell papers and generate clicks. The actual picture is nothing like the media would have us believe. You can read some of his other articles on science20 as well. I find him very reassuring. The facts are out there, but we are being sold END OF THE WORLD nonsense instead.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/03/2020 10:41

madeyemoodysmum very decent and sensible of you. I am sure your dd will be fine even if it is the virus, but checking is the responsible thing to do.

I hope your dd feels better soon.

Roussette · 03/03/2020 10:56

ThymeLord thank you so much for that, interesting to read.

TwoleftUggs · 03/03/2020 11:23

so this morning I had my once-daily read of the news. This one fact from bbc almost jumped off the screen at me..

‘There are a total of 90,936 confirmed cases worldwide - although more than half of those (47,995) have already recovered.’

Every day the big scary first figure gets headlined. How many times do we see the second figure. Much less often.

TwoleftUggs · 03/03/2020 11:27

Posted too soon. I was showing these figures to back up the poster above and their link to doomsday news! I’ve seen that 90k virtually every day. The second figure it’s the first time I’ve read it. Much less doomsday.

Worryworker · 03/03/2020 12:40

Thanks @Thymelord- that is great, very interesting and reassuring to read. I feel even more confident of getting to Lake Garda in May now!

Keynote1 · 03/03/2020 12:43

I am trying not to panic which is difficult as a worrier. Rightly or wrongly I found the PM broadcast quite reassuring, certainly didnt underplay the severity but I felt a bit better after listening, as opposed to the DM reports of what was said which was totally different to what I heard.

Thymelord · 03/03/2020 12:57

I am glad people found it helpful! He is such a great informed knowledgeable guy, I find him immensely reassuring.

Thymelord · 03/03/2020 12:57

What I find interesting is to actually listen to everything Boris said, and his responses, and then look at how the BBC and Sky News etc. etc. have cherry picked particular sentences to create dramatic headlines.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/03/2020 13:07

Somebody said what we have is not an epidemic or a pandemic but an infodemic. I think that is a rather good way to put it: all the information is multi[plying and making us feel ill with worry.

Meanwhile my daughter a hundred miles away has old-fashioned flu, caught from her boss, and has forbidden me to drop everything and go and nurse her, which is making me very sad.

Lovetocycle · 03/03/2020 13:11

This too shall pass.

boon · 03/03/2020 13:12

Thank you @thymelord really useful link. Ive joined his facebook group.

PineappleDanish · 03/03/2020 13:16

Every company and organisation does worst case scenario planning. Everyone. DH works in aviation - they often play "games" about hijacks, or a 9/11 type scenario, or an electro magnetic pulse knocking out the whole of the uK's electricity or some other crazy scenario which they then play through with the staff and input from other emergency services. (DH was chuffed because last time he got to sit in an office and pretend to be Theresa May getting updates from the team). But just because they have run through "what would we do if 90% of the staff were off sick" or "what would we do if there was a civil war and riots outside the gates" doesn't mean that anyone thinks it's going to happen.

The NHS will do the same - I saw some hysterical headline the other day about using Hyde Park as a makeshift morgue as the corpses pile up in the streets. That's clearly one of those "worst case scenario" planning things which someone has come up with at some point in the past.

The papers are being so irresponsible about all of this and are hyping up fear.

GloriaMumsnet · 03/03/2020 13:18

Hi all, we've moved this to our new Coronavirus topic.

magimedi · 03/03/2020 13:25

Thanks for that link, ThymeLord.

It's so good to read measured & reasonable posts on here.

I have this thread in my 'Watch' List to can come direct to it & avoid all the other corona crap Grin.

Love the term 'infodemic'.

RapidRainbow · 03/03/2020 13:37

@Thymelord thanks for the link, I'm going to have a good read. I find if I check in here first before checking the news I stay calmer than if I do it the other way around, because I can see the twist on info.

Just like my post about 13000 people who would have been tested because they were at risk of having Coronavirus but didn't, I find that your point @TwoleftUggs about the amount of people who have since recovered also incredible to think it paints a less scary picture.
