Coronavirus - sick and tired of the hysterical scaremongering

I work in an office and I've overheard a number of people blowing the outbreak all out of proportion. One colleague has ordered facemasks off Amazon - we're in SE England ffs. I wish people would educate themselves (from reputable sources) and stop winding everyone up.

Of course, a healthy amount of caution is important but it's made me aware of how mass hysteria ie witch trials occurred in the past. Just takes one ignorant person with a massive mouth (yes I'm talking about you Sue in budgeting).

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

I know I don't have to read it.

That's not my question. My question is what's the purpose of this? We all know where we are.

Maybe because those of us with an interest in social sciences find this reflection fascinating?

Reading is fine, but why the need to bump it up?

I know it’s really annoying. I wish people would stop posting.

Reflection is fascinating to some. Obviously not you. Choose your threads accordingly.

I wonder if it's reflection though.

Reflection is usually done in quiet, no need to let everybody else you are indeed reflecting. You can read without bumping up.

And because I'm aware that I'm bumping up the thread myself I'll let you "reflect".

That's an interesting take.

Reflection is very often a shared experience in fact, via documentary or podcast or discussion for example. This is an example of a reflection via thread.

You surely have to be a very sad person to bump a year old thread because you want to say I told you so Confused

I say that as someone who was extremely worried last January.

@Fortherosesjoni70

I find it interesting.

And to imagine where we will be at this time next year.

Right now we are hearing about the variants and the increasing deadliness of each wave.

We are also seeing extraordinary efforts with vaccine production, and great variance in how different nations are managing. A sort of coming together of heaven and hell.

It all depends on your age and stage I guess.

If you are healthy and 38, you might not be too worried.
If you're healthy and 58 you might be rather concerned.

@Pyewhacket

Blowing it out of proportion ?

We normally have 18-24 ITU beds over a winter. At the moment we have 172 but we don't have that many qualified ITU trained staff. Four people died just before I came off shift this morning. Spend a day with me and you'll never get another nights sleep again.

Same here. Our ICU has more than doubled and we’re not at the peak yet. One specialist ICU nurse for 3 patients with 3 ‘ordinary’ nurses helping.

There are not enough qualified icu specialist nurses and doctors.

Not sure what to say to you. Thank you for all that you and the staff are doing.

Not sure if it is ok to ask a couple of questions?
Are you and others able to get counselling for what you are going through daily?

And, if I may ask, how long does it take to train up a qualified ITU person? Thanks.[/quote]
They send a nurse with many years experience of working on icu on a year long specialised course.

Worried but keeping it in perspective, and less worried than I was this time last year.
