Coronavirus - sick and tired of the hysterical scaremongering

I work in an office and I've overheard a number of people blowing the outbreak all out of proportion. One colleague has ordered facemasks off Amazon - we're in SE England ffs. I wish people would educate themselves (from reputable sources) and stop winding everyone up.

Of course, a healthy amount of caution is important but it's made me aware of how mass hysteria ie witch trials occurred in the past. Just takes one ignorant person with a massive mouth (yes I'm talking about you Sue in budgeting).

I heard an NHS doctor on the radio saying that there will come a point where they have 8 people who all need emergency care and a ventilator to survive, but they’ll only be able to treat one of them. How on earth do you choose??

This is why there is now 'social profiling' folks.

People are being pre-identified as 'vulnerable' and are going to get a letter any day. If they get ill and there isn't a ventilator, it's no longer the attending doctor's job to decide. The government have pre made the decision to take the pressure off said doctors.

Do you have a link for this?

I've now found it.

In case anyone is interested.

It stands to reason that they were going to do this.

Doctors in Italy have been making this decision for months now and it must be hell trying to decide who to ventilate and who to let drown in their own body fluids or have their vital organs pack up one by one. The British Govt. want to protect the MH of our medical staff by taking away that decision as best they can. This is why people need to fucking well WAKE UP follow the advice and stay home.

You die in the most distressing and appalling way with this disease. you drown.

Stop it with the 'Can I drive up the road and mow my mothers lawn' shite and get real. Stay in. My DH has to go out to dialysis three times a week and he is hoping for a transplant at some point in the future as he is otherwise well. With people being categorised like this he will be deemed expendable.
It's not even for that long. The longer we stay locked down the more time they have to work on making thousands of ventilators and a cure or vaccine. It's all time critical. We will all get ill with this as it will eventually turn into a background illness like the flu but if all the hospitals have ventilators and the treatment of it becomes routine, we can all go back to our normal lives.

Well this was an interesting read Blush

BarefootHippieChick · 15/04/2020 18:37

I've just read it too. How perception can change in such a short space of time.

Rainbowsoup · 22/01/2021 00:14

Wow

Ozzie9523 · 22/01/2021 00:22

@Rainbowsoup

Wow
This didn’t age well did it! Sadly.
Ziggydancer · 22/01/2021 01:08

Gosh! How we did not know in the early days how serious this was going to pan out😢

Robbybobtail · 22/01/2021 01:14

Why do people keep bringing up these old threads?

So a year ago there was a virus going around and some people thought it would just peter out and not be that serious? At that point it hadn’t killed many people so that seems quite a reasonable response?

Why the wide-eyed “oh wow, how dumb we were” inference of starting up threads like this?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn’t it?
And tbh - the title of that thread still applies today.

Ziggydancer · 22/01/2021 01:21

I was just saying back when this thread was started people didn't know how serious it would be!

Rainbowsoup · 22/01/2021 06:20

@Robbybobtail it’s not a ‘wow how dumb were we’ it’s a wow isn’t it interesting to reflect back to our thoughts just prior to our lives we’re all upturned!

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/01/2021 06:50

@Ziggydancer

Gosh! How we did not know in the early days how serious this was going to pan out😢
In fairness some of us did know it was going to be awful and could see the train smash.

Nor did they want to listen.

They just called us scaremongers & idiots.

Bet plenty have namechanged now!!

If only people HAD listened, if only the GOVT had acted much sooner.

RememberSelfCompassion · 22/01/2021 07:17

Wow. On all these threads its 8nteresting that rhere were those who were warn8ng what might happen but that get shot down as hysterical.

Its amazing that we still have people on the boards who think its scaremongering etc.
I noted a Polly early on say that the problem mightbbe overwhelming the nhs..

confuseddotcom090 · 22/01/2021 07:22

What should they have done sooner? You can't stop a virus once it's already here. And it was here alright.

Don't go pointing at New Zealand. It's hardly an international travel hub with thousands and thousands of Chinese students already here. Not remotely comparable.

There's plenty they could have done differently but acting earlier would have just changed the timing of the chaos.

And if these vaccines aren't super effective (and we've limited evidence they are, so far, in a real world setting) the New Zealand is going to have to remain forever isolated from the world or wait it's turn for the hysteria. Or if they were sensible, invest in healthcare capacity, because that's the only way to handle this. Not shutting down schools and the economy and life indefinitely.

amysaurus87 · 22/01/2021 07:23

Well this thread aged well...OP still think your colleague is hysterical scaremongering?

Frenchdressing · 22/01/2021 07:30

Reading this was confusing until I saw the date!

There are still people on SM suggesting it’s all an overreaction still!

Silvercatowner · 22/01/2021 07:32

@Ziggydancer

Gosh! How we did not know in the early days how serious this was going to pan out😢
Because no-one is psychic???
WWOTW · 22/01/2021 07:39

Interesting reading the first few posts on this thread. All the usual “experts” thinking they know everything. Well you didn’t did you? I particularly like the one about being more likely to be killed by a cow falling from the sky!

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/01/2021 07:55

A lot of us were chastised and belittled as being scaremongers and screeching banshees from about the time this thread started onwards.

It’s quite tragic reading how blindly foolish some people were and unless the BBC or Daily Mail was instructing them they simply could not think independently for themselves at how much of a catastrophe we faced.

redsquirrelfan · 22/01/2021 08:09

In fairness some of us did know it was going to be awful and could see the train smash

No you thought it could be. You didn't have any more of a crystal ball than we did, or any inside knowledge that it would be worse than SARS or MERS. You just guessed correctly that it would be different this time.

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/01/2021 08:19

@redsquirrelfan I speak for myself when I say I screeched like a banshee for people to take it seriously. So many didn’t want to and thought it was an overreaction.

So many Still don’t want to.

It’s quite depressing particularly when you think of the next year or two ahead.

x2boys · 22/01/2021 08:50

Hindsight is a wonderful thing I remember reading a When will schools go back thread in the early days and one poster got torn to shreds for suggesting after February half term 2021 ,well obviously they did go back in September but it was very hit and miss depending where you where in the UK and now they are shut again .

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 22/01/2021 08:53

I think it's incredible to read that and think how far we've come. And what we've achieved. Millions of people have continued to get on with things for nearly a year now and bent their minds to deal with all this. And the world has created 3+ functioning vaccines. Pretty incredible.
