Coronavirus - sick and tired of the hysterical scaremongering

Ashtower · 24/01/2020 11:46

I work in an office and I've overheard a number of people blowing the outbreak all out of proportion. One colleague has ordered facemasks off Amazon - we're in SE England ffs. I wish people would educate themselves (from reputable sources) and stop winding everyone up.

Of course, a healthy amount of caution is important but it's made me aware of how mass hysteria ie witch trials occurred in the past. Just takes one ignorant person with a massive mouth (yes I'm talking about you Sue in budgeting).

OP posts:
BerlinCalling · 22/01/2021 08:54

I just read the opening post and thought, why wouldn't your colleague be wearing a face mask?! Why aren't you?! Then I saw the date 🙈 bit harsh to drag this up though, none of us knew how bad it would get.

Kljnmw3459 · 22/01/2021 08:55

I know I've been consistently wrong with my "predictions " concerning coronavirus. I didn't think we'd have to lockdown and I really really thought it would be over by Easter (2020!!), then June. I didn't think there would be a second wave....

x2boys · 22/01/2021 08:58

No none of us knew how bad it would get apart from maybe Sue in Budgeting In an office somewhere I the SE of EnglandGrin

higglepiggley · 22/01/2021 08:59

It sounds like your all enjoying being right about how much of a catastrophy this has been !?

Ffs. I don't. Blame people for saying it was all scare mongering at first. That's the media to blame that is.
Even now they slam the headline ' mutant strain ' in bold on a front cover like it's doing anything different than any other virus is.

Yes we should take this seriously but ffs you also didn't know how bad this was going to get.
You made a prediction and yes you was right.

Bewareoftheblob · 22/01/2021 09:03

@Robbybobtail

And tbh - the title of that thread still applies today.

How true Sad

Fizbosshoes · 22/01/2021 09:14

@redsquirrelfan

I agree.
There were an enormous amount of MN who knew but never actually qualified that with quite how or why they knew this was going to be different from SARS/MERS/swine flu. And what better position does that put them in now, other than saying I told you so? (Despite their knowledge about exactly how this would pan out, none appear to have an influence over government policy)
Similarly on our local fb page there were a lot of worried people taking their children out of school in February. I remember saying at the time "at the moment this worries me less than norovirus, but my view may change with time" (and obviously it has and there was no choice but to have our children at home) I look back now and think how little we I knew but I dont berate myself for not being worried earlier, as I dont think it would have made any difference.

Fizbosshoes · 22/01/2021 09:15

Ooops cross out fail above!!Blush
I'm more embarrassed about that than for not predicting the worst pandemic for 100 years!

StiffyByng1 · 22/01/2021 09:19

@Urkiddingright

It’s the same as any pandemic. I remember swine and bird flu being the same, I was never bothered about those either.
Same, nor was I until I got swine flu. So incredibly unwell, it was ghastly. I didn’t die though!
Arobase · 22/01/2021 09:22

I can remember thinking, when lockdown started last March, "Goodness, I could be working from home for as long as three weeks ..." It seemed an age, back then. I've never gone back to the office and in fact never will, now.

lightand · 22/01/2021 09:23

People sarcastically say in life, "hindsight is a wonderful thing".

Well, it is.

flowers08 · 22/01/2021 09:26

Poor taste to bring this thread back up. We have never experienced something like this in our lifetime - it's understandable that most couldn't imagine life being how it is now.

Miramour · 22/01/2021 09:30

I listened to a year old interview with a virologist today and it was so interesting to reflect on what has happened compared with what was said in the interview. The virologist was very smug and dismissive, almost sneering at doctors who had spoken out about what they feared was to unfold. The interviewer was so well prepped and kept prodding, was fascinating.

MistleTOEboughski · 22/01/2021 09:31

How I wish Sue in budgeting had been wrong.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/01/2021 09:36

Wow - fascinating to look back!

Indeed... or to what doctors were reporting...

Boris,is that you? 😉😁(Sorry fir being cheeky,but hysterical laughter seems likely today as it's feeling a bit much today)

For those saying it's poor taste to bring the thread up now, because it's understandable that people didn't know what to expect...I agree, nobody knew what was coming. However, the sneering tone and the ridicule of those who were worried back then is worthy of some reflection, I think. Perhaps those who took the piss out of Sue in marketing, and those like her, will be a little bit less dismissive of other perspectives in the future?

That's one of the most honest posts I've seen on these threads.

Sue in Budgeting for Prime Minister!!!!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/01/2021 10:03

I

redsquirrelfan · 22/01/2021 10:07

Some of my posts haven't aged well, I was sure schools in England would reopen after May half term (and still think they should have done when the weather was warm and the virus levels low).

I also thought people were crazy to say they'd hide from the world until there was a vaccine, - I didn't think there would be one (never mind multiple) this quickly or at all!

Timeontimeoff · 22/01/2021 10:22

Local psychic said it was all made up last January. By March she said it would be over in June. Then in the summer she said she had already had it and most of the population had it in December 2019 but didn't know it. Then it would be gone by Christmas. The Easter. Now questioning vaccine safety because it was all so rushed...

Sue in budgeting seems much more switched on that anyone - perhaps the OP should have listened to Sue and informed the PM?

bigvig · 22/01/2021 10:38

80,000 people have died within two weeks of contracting Covid.
40,000 people can die in a normal year of flu, of flu not just having tested positive for flu within two weeks of death.

Just saying!

I have so much respect for those that own their views like this when they reflect and realise they'd underestimated things.

Lots of us were ridiculed from the start when we expressed our concerns, we do need to reflect on how we treat each other's views, it's an important lesson for all of us.

RedToothBrush · 22/01/2021 10:44

@CakeandCustard28

At least it’s stopped people mass panicking about Brexit. Grin However YANBU it still has a low rate mortality. It’s hardly Ebola.
Haha. This post has aged particularly well.
