Conflict in the Middle East

US moves nuclear-powered warship to Middle East

The US has moved one of its most powerful warships to the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran over the killing of protesters, the Pentagon has said.

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its strike group have moved west from the Indo-Pacific region, satellite data from Copernicus shows. It includes fighter jets, guided missile destroyers and an attack submarine.

Sources told The Hill that the movement of the ship to the Middle East would take around a week, with Washington continuing to threaten strikes on Tehran over its brutal crackdown on protests.

Trump's envoy to the UN, Mike Waltz, insisted “all options are on the table” during an emergency Security Council meeting to discuss the Iran crisis. The US also warned Tehran’s leadership that any further killing will have “grave consequences”.

So I wonder - is Trump really prepared to keep out of the uprising in Iran despite saying that help is on the way? Or is he just stalling for time?

And those who do want to end the oppression how can they?

You seem focussed on anything bar the violence they are suffering.

Ffs, what don’t you understand about that it depends on what the majority want. There is no easy answer here.

Jesus. I don’t want ICE shooting innocent people in Minnesota, I don’t want to hear about Sudanese warlords killing thousands of people, I don’t want to hear about Gaza being ethnically cleansed. There is so much shit in the world but I’m not going to accept that a puppet should be foisted on the Iranian people simply because US hegemony dictates it at the behest of a diktat of Israel. Does that make my views clear.

Yes, your obsession with Israel is perfectly clear.

You seem to be railing against people who haven’t said anything about a puppet gov.

Most are focussed on the suffering on those there and aghast at their plight.

KatiePricesKnickers · 28/01/2026 17:56

@RedSongBird ’I don’t want to hear about Gaza being ethnically cleansed.’

Well you are in luck, because it isn’t being ethnically cleansed.

Yes this comes through in your posts. Without a doubt that is how you are approaching these threads but you’ve got it wrong. Of course people are thinking of women losing their eyes, people being shot in the street or worse for anyone there. It’s horrific.

That you respond with this is more about your barrier to understanding what people are saying on here.

Twiglets1 · 28/01/2026 18:35

@RedSongBird it's only your own prejudices that make you think the people posting about Iran don't genuinely care about the Iranian people.

There is no evidence for this opinion at all - quite the reverse as we have expressed more upset over what is happening to the protestors there than you.

There is no reason whatsoever that the majority of people posting on a parenting website wouldn't care about innocent civilians being killed by an authoritarian regime, including women & children.

So you're not going to tell me where I supported any kind of US takeover then? Just insult everyone on the thread and flounce?

Bye then.

Why do people think Pahlavi is a puppet?

He lived through the revolution that bought Khomeini into power. He must have seen and recognized the dissatisfaction the people felt with his father. He's lived in America for a while. Perhaps his views on democracy etc just align with what we would generally think of as American values ( present admin not included. )

Do people generally regard Pahlavi as a puppet?

( I don't know any Iranians to ask )

I don’t personally know any Iranians either, but I’ve been listening to Mahyar Tousi’s podcast quite a lot recently (he’s a British-Iranian political commentator).
He’s mentioned several times that protesters in Iran were calling for Reza Pahlavi (of course I don’t know how representative that is).

Another interesting point he mentioned were Pahlavi’s speeches on Instagram where he addresses the Iranian people:
According to Instagram metrics, Pahlavi’s reel views plummeted from between 30-90 million to roughly 2.8-5.5 million immediately after the internet blackout was imposed on January 8th. That would suggest that a significant number of people were following his speeches prior to the shutdown.

I dislike the Iranian regime just as much as I dislike any regime that is willing to slaughter thousands of innocent civilians just as much as I dislike false empathy towards the Iranian people as a disguise to foist a puppet dictator on them.

Noone here has the power to foist anyone on any country so this is such a silly argument. Take it up with whoever you think has 'false empathy'. Everyine I know who supports the Iranian people had no desire to 'foist a puppet dictator on them'.

SharonEllis · 28/01/2026 22:03

RedSongBird · 28/01/2026 16:03

How many are against the regime? Do you know because I don’t. Iran is a country of 90 million. What if the ones who want a change in regime is only 10% of the population.9 million. That would mean significant protests but what do you think should be done.

Oh come on, thousands out on the streets day after day? You seem very determined to.minimise what is happening. Why is that?

SharonEllis · 28/01/2026 22:05

RedSongBird · 28/01/2026 16:48

They’re actually theocrats, not autocrats. You need to look at the board of peace for that. So tell me, is your desire for the US to overthrow the regime because you care about the Iranian people or is it because you want to see a friendly to Israel government in Iran.

Ah,now we're getting somewhere.

The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made quite a clear statement about the Iranian regime at a press conference today:
^^
“A regime that can only hold onto power through sheer violence and terror against its own population: its days are numbered,” Merz tells journalists at a press conference alongside Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
“It could be a matter of weeks but this regime has no legitimacy to govern the country,”

Doesn't it?! Hilarious idea that Israel issues diktats to to the United States.

And why would anyone not want relations between Israel and Iran to be improved?

Yes I can just imagine Netanyahu telling Trump what to do - not! The relationship is clearly one where Trump calls the shots.

A better relationship between Israel & Iran could only be a good thing for peace in the Middle East. Not everyone wants that of course.

To start blaming Israel and the US is simply pandering to the regime and indeed that is the regime excuse for shooting dead thousands of citizens in cold blood. The regime tried to dishonour the victims of this massacre by calling them stooges. Simply awful.
