Can someone explain Islamophobia to me?

I don't think I have an irrational fear of Muslims, but I think I have a reasonable concern about radical Islam, does that make me Islamophobic?

Assuming you're responding to me, fair enough, but that's about the sabbath and not about the humor.

Do Muslims ever joke about their religion and culture? Is that even allowed?

I'm wasted... absolutely bloody wasted on here.

Oh, was that meant to be some kind of joke?

Tell you what, lets invite some Muslim comedians and some Jewish comedians to post up their best one liners and find out how much humour there is in Islam and Judaism.

I know of plenty of Jewish comedians, I don't know of any Muslim ones; enlighten me?

The ignorance in this post is staggering, all you had to do was Google muslim comedians and you would find plenty.

Now you're becoming needy.

Alright then,
Google Schmooli Ben-Ibrahim
see what you get.

I did and I don't recognize many names, but those I do seem mostly to have been brought up Muslim but no longer practice.

I get an American rabbi, author, and media host, thanks, but what's your point?

It's not like there's a shortage of examples of Jewish comedians or media hosts.

You clearly haven't looked properly, I know plenty of muslim comedians with varying levels of practice.

If I'm really honest I found some of your previous posts quite offensive towards Muslims like myself. I fully appreciate that there will be people who have different views, however, other posters were willing to put that forward respectfully. For that reason I'm not going to entertain this conversation with you further, as I don't believe you are genuinely curious in your questions about Islam.

I apologize for any offense, but it's hard to know what exactly is offensive when people won't explain the offense.

I know, I know. Jewish comedians and media hosts are everywhere you turn, and, you know what, a lot of them are very good.

However, getting back to your point..

Is it your hypothesis that; If Islam had a greater sense of humour then the Palestinians would have been able to laugh off what the Israelis have been doing to them ?

Whatever made you think that ?

No.

I'm trying to understand if poking fun at Islamic beliefs is Islamophobic and that lead me to trying to think of any Muslim comedians, so I googled it and the only ones I could find seem to be ex-Muslims or people who still consider themselves culturally Muslim without actually being Muslims.

I'm going to be attending a training session on Islamophobia through work in a couple of weeks, a companion to the training on Antisemitism I went on a couple of weeks ago. The one on antisemitism was fascinating, I hadn't realized quite how far back it goes and how deeply ingrained it is in European culture.

From this thread it seems that questioning anything about Islam is Islamophobic, I was hoping for more nuanced discussion honestly.

The one on antisemitism was fascinating, I hadn't realized quite how far back it goes and how deeply ingrained it is in European culture.

A generalisation, but broadly true.

Meanwhile, millions of Jews and Muslims had lived relatively harmoniously across North Africa and over to Persia for centuries.

And the establishment of a Jewish state changed that, and now there are almost no Jews in any Muslim countries. Meanwhile, to get back to the topic, is it Islamophobic to point out that Jews were second class citizens in Muslim countries?

I don't have any particular views about you as a Muslim, as long as you are not radicalized or fully veiled in public. Are you? If you are, I'm fascinated, what motivates you to become invisible, are you allowed to speak, how do you feel about that?

Just as one example of a very offensive post towards women who choose to wear the veil.

They may not and I understand your point that other religions may, by contrast, allow for some jibes. But think of Charlie Hebdoe in France who got bombed by Muslims for mocking the Prophet. Who defended them? The Pope.American Christians hate swearing. If you say “Jesus!” “Christ almighty!” “Bloody Hell” “Bloody”. Many people were highly offended by Monty Python’s The Life of Brian because of using Jesus for humour.

ScrollingLeaves · 05/03/2025 22:55

The Pope sympathised with the terrorists’s motives ( not their murderous acts)).

Scirocco · 05/03/2025 23:14

As with a lot of populations, many Muslims do, in fact, have a sense of humour. People may, however, be less inclined to share their humour with people who appear to hold negative and stereotyped views about them.

Based on the number of laughing emojis I end up with, apparently I'm unintentionally hilarious. Maybe I should do a show on the Fringe.

Can you explain how this is offensive? The veil is completely alien to my culture and antithetical to women’s liberation. It’s offensive to ask how you feel about it?
