Confirmation from the Israeli military that the ICRC have the Thai hostages released to them, too. Reported to be travelling back to the border now.

Wonderful news.

mollyfolk · 30/01/2025 11:27

It looks absolutely petrifying. They probably have had little contact with others for so long and now they are pushed through these crowds.

why all the photographs? And the forced waving?

Whatsinanamehey · 30/01/2025 11:31

Agam Bergers released was done in a different location. Am I correct in thing Arbel and Gadi were released today by PIJ and not Hamas? Is that why it was in a different location?

Arbel was. Not sure who held the other six.

I think PIJ released a video earlier of Arbel and Gadi, suggesting PIJ held both of them. The release of the Thai hostages was a separate process but I don't think it's been confirmed who held them. One thing I find very worrying is that huge (horrifying) spectacles were created around hostage releases, but the Thai men being released have gone very much under the radar... What are Hamas/PIJ trying to hide, how badly have these men been treated?

Scirocco · 30/01/2025 13:01

Apparently the Palestinians due to be released today... the vehicles they were on have turned back to the prisons...

As far as we can tell, Israel is refusing to release them because of what happened at the hostage handovers earlier...

Fcking PIJ, fcking govt, f*ck...

Whatsinanamehey · 30/01/2025 13:16

I have just seen
Netanyahu has ordered the prisoners are returned back into prison because of the way that Arbel and Gadi were released today.
Whilst i agree that the handover was terrible and the concerns are valid, i hope this doesn't break the already fragile ceasefire.

There's going to be backlash by the families of the Palestinian detainees who have been waiting.

Whatsinanamehey · 30/01/2025 13:24

There's going to be another release on Saturday, I hope this doesn't jeopardise it.

There are people who just want their loved ones home, and people who are just hoping that someone coming out can tell them something about their own disappeared loved ones - maybe they saw them or heard something about them in captivity, even if it's bad news, it's an answer, you know? We're waiting. We're used to waiting. We're used to betrayal and loss. But we shouldn't have to be. And you know, people won't care. People don't consider that there are innocent people held captive in those prisons and who knows where else, that innocent people are disappeared and we never find out what happened to them.

And from a political perspective (and it's hard to consider academic perspectives right now watching this), doing this when Zubeidi is due for release is a high risk strategy.

PIJ have done their best to sabotage this and it's working.

EllaDisenchanted · 30/01/2025 13:54

@Scirocco FlowersI haven't checked MSM, but the news groups I am on are saying release is expected to take place at 5:00 PM (3PM UK). I can't check MSM atm, but they've been pretty reliable to date.

I hadn't thought of PIJ trying to sabotage the deal, but that would make total sense considering we know they didn't want to do it.

Whatsinanamehey · 30/01/2025 14:39

Yes mentioned on BBC too. Glad to hear it's still going ahead.

It's both ways though

As pointed out on Sky

The drama in Gaza was unseemly and unnecessary, and created another road-bump for this fragile ceasefire deal.
But Palestinians point towards Israel's use of tear gas against crowds in the West Bank celebrating the release of their prisoners as double standards.
Neither side has any trust in the other, which is no surprise, and both want to control the public narrative.

BBC spoke to two girls who were waiting for the release of their father, they recieved news that whilst they were waiting in Ramallah, settlers had invaded their house and caused chaos.

Arbel looks like a shell of herself. Such a good job the Israeli government were able to enforce her return.

It came out on the news this evening that Arbel Yehud was held alone for the entire period of captivity. The first Israeli she met since Oct 7 was Gadi Mozes this morning, a few hours before the release. She didn't know what had happened to her kibbutz on Oct 7, meaning that she can't have had access to any media either. Just horrifying.

My post was about intra-Palestinian factionalism. We know Hamas wanted this ceasefire deal and PIJ didn't want to release Arbel, had to be pressured. To that end, they've actually been more sensible in their power plays with the released hostages.

So it's not about Israelis v Palestinians. It's about jihadists v jihadists. Both of those organisations took their relative positions before the tear gassing this afternoon. You can just make a post noting the tear gassing and criticising it if you want, instead of trying to crowbar a both sides point into a post where it doesn't fit.

@QuimCarrey not sure why my post came as a tag to yours. I wasn't trying to tag you in it (it doesn't even make sense as a response to your post) and mumsnet doesn't allow me to edit. It was just a general part of the discussion of bad behaviour on both sides.

There were jubilant scenes in the West Bank, as more Palestinians were released from Israeli jails under the ceasefire deal.

That's awful. Alone and then a dreadful release where it looked like people were trying to get to her.

Yarden Bibas will be released tomorrow but not his wife and children, which perhaps ends hopes that they are alive.
